Half of the problem is sourcing the denim. Whenever we make a "high quality / Made in USA" pair of jeans, it's always going to be sourced from the North Carolina mills. . . Unfortunately, the standard of this denim is inferior to Japanese denim.

The other half is the image. We are an American brand. We deal in Americana . . . every pair of jeans represents this. If we started making American jeans out of Japanese denim, someone is going to complain.

Now, of course, I haven't mentioned the denim sourced from Egypt, Haiti, the Phillipines, and Mexico. And I haven't talked about the factories overseas, either. . .

Also, if we bought Japanese denim. It would be sold to us at a premium. I'm no accountant, but I imagine our contribution margins would plummet. . . We would have to sell these jeans at a high, high price.

Jeans are a tricky business, man. Basically, Levi's is just riding on its popularity and image, but the quality leaves a lot to be desired.

Oh? This thread is still around?

If you need any recommendations (in terms of quality), I would only recommend Made and Crafted and LVC. Of course, not a lot of people want to spend $100+ on a pair of jeans.

For some of the more easily accessible jeans, I would look into a pair of Shrink-to-Fit jeans. These are the only 501s that look good, in my opinion. As a heads up, only buy the ones made in Mexico or the USA. Avoid any STFs made in Egypt like the plague, they are cut like parachute pants or something. The STF jeans are Levis' staple--like baguettes from a bakery. They are always $50 well spent.

(. . . of course straight cut jeans aren't for everyone, and you should disregard my bias as a Levi's employee, etc. )

I've had a few jobs, the one with the most /fa/ potential would actually have been working on a TV show, in the studio you got to see people from other shows and that was a real mix of people. The hot shot producers always dressed fly and the guys on the floor just plain ol didn't give a fuck about their bum cracks showing (women included). The talent were mostly dressed by wardrobe so were not that well dressed themselves.

Working in a corporate law firm was a mixed bag too but obviously there was much less freedom to choose. Christ I saw someone get chastised for wearing a knit tie to a client meeting.... sigh
