Nothing wrong with mink oil as long as it's quality stuff and not a cheap blend. Obenaufs LP is totally different kind of product anyway: it's a heavy duty leather protector where as mink oil and neatsfoot oil are merely leather preservatives that keep the leather from drying.

Thick, solid leather such as used in RW boots doesn't need protecting unless you literally use them for farm labour or something.

I have heard this being said about neatsfoot oil, but still there's no truth behind it. Apparently the misconception comes from the fact that the oil originates from an animal so some figured that as "organic" matter it rots the stitching of your boot. When in reality there is absolutely nothing organic left in the oil since it's been filtered to absolute purity.

The only reason people tie their laces like that is b/c they think it looks super #workwear. I tried it out a few times and it just makes weird lines in the leather and makes your ankles hurt if you actually try to walk for a while

not always. yeah it makes "weird lines" but if you always tie it that way it doesn't matter, besides, some people like their boots getting beat-up looking and having those lines. more importantly, it's not always less comfortable. on my red wings if I do it up at the top eyelet the laces are too long and the top of the boot is tight and uncomfortable, so I do them up to the second highest eyelet and go around the back, so the laces aren't so long and it's actually more comfortable for me because the top edge of the boot doesn't hug my leg.

my dad is an avid outdoorsman, he wears boots that he calls israeli army boots (its doubtful if they really are) and he does that because, as you said, the laces are too long. also it keeps shit from getting inside the boots, and it keeps it tighter, providing more ankle support.
the only reason, really, is personal preference, especially when it serves no practical function like if your just out on the town.
