Do you think it's appropriate to dress semi-formal all the time. It's something I do, but I don't know if it's appropriate. A prime example is the character of the show Sherlock. It looks good in the show, but that's TV and I was wondering if I look stupid in real life. I resemble the main character a lot with a similar hair style and body type.

I'm a computer programmer and kind of entrepreneur who made a lot of money off of a recently released product. Ever since then I've fallen in love with tailored clothes and stuff like that. I still live in a small town, but I'm moving away this year to Silicon Valley.

>> No.6128140

i see no problem.

assuming that you mean actually semi-formal and there are no fedoras involved.

that's a small part of it, but what you want, and like, is important too.
i got button shirts in my wardrobe and they come out now and then, even in casual situations. sometimes i just wanna b fancy. but i don't wear it all the time cuz i aint always feelin it u kno? i wouldn't compose a wardrobe without a couple of slouchy knits because sometimes that's just what i want to wear.

Sherlock can rock it, but you are not a crime wizard.

I think his outfits work as active wear, if you're heading out for a night around town, and actually moving between physical locations in the actual outdoors, the righthand outfit with the long coat and scarf probably look great and will be practical, it lends itself to motion. On the other hand i think if you're wearing it to an indoor dinner party type thing, it'll just look like a costume, and you don't want that unless it's a costume party and you're going as Sherlock.

Also personally i think an unbuttoned shirt is never ok, unless you're a pirate.

This is what you look like with the open shirt. If you are at a dinner party, or a social event, nobody wants to stare at your pecs all night, and inflicting them upon people will make reviled. Unless you're on a beach, open shirt is like the /fit/ version of Fedora Neckbeard, especially as OP said in a semi-formal occasion.

Don't do it.

It's not like they'd suddenly look better with baseball caps. There's a whole hell of a lot going wrong there, more than just the hat. New to /fa, so what is wrong with a fedora?

so clothing is a form of non verbal communication

when you wear a fedora it appears as though you're trying to communicate to the world that you're just like one of the dudes from mad men or something

but you're not, you're a dumbass

As >>6128251 said, its about communication, and a fedora is kind of like a form of fashion autism. To start with it's a hat, which only like 15% (this are real fake statistics) of people can pull off without looking like a turbofaggot anyway.

But the Fedora specifically is something that was a sign of high style many years ago. While it is perfectly acceptable and even a good thing to draw inspiration from the past, wearing a hat from the 1890s is not 'drawing inspiration', its 'copying'. What you are essentially doing is not dressing fashionably, but rather putting on a costume.

And even if people on the street don't articulate in their heads 'It looks like part of a victorian age costume party is escaping on this guy's head', they will certainly realize that it looks ridiculous, consciously or unconsciously. Especially when its paired with blue jeans and a t-shirt, which it will be because you didn't say 'i bought a suit' you said 'i bought a fedora'.

Although fedoras were invented around then, they're more commonly associated with the 1920s-40s. Current past-style seems to be more late 40's-early '60s.

I get the "it looks like a costume" thing. I usually wear dress pants and button up shirt, sometimes a sportcoat (work in city government). my /fa prowess is somewhere between dwight schrute and mel gibson. trying to break out of the old man mode (not old man yet)

>> No.6128319

It's better than malaria too, or weeping pustules all over your face, but its not good.

That pic is of Amitabh Bachchan, a super popular Bollywood actor. That pic is literally the best possible version of the open shirt, and he still looks like a trucker caught by suprise.

(He also looks literally exactly the same as my father, to the point where in India people kept mistaking him for this dude, literally every day)

>> No.6128324

What's wrong with fedoras is that they're so heavily associated with the 20's-40's that anyone wearing one (even with a suit) will look like they're in the wrong era. Like Bell-bottoms or monocles.

On topic though, if you want to dress business-casual all the time, you better be going to nice places all the time with friends who dress similarly, otherwise you'll look try-hard. Make sure everything fits perfect and try to let your own style shine through a little instead of just wearing a navy suit everywhere you go. Check out The Satoralist and menswear blogs regulatory and pick up on the non-ridiculous stuff, and stay trendy so you don't look like a mad-men wannabe.

Obviously you shouldn't be wearing an open shirt at a funeral or a formal dinner party, but at the beach, at a festival, in the park, etc. it's fine imo.

Live/work in an area with a lot of offices - dress shirt and slacks would not stand out. at the office, a sport coat would get noticed. Trying to figure out how to develop my own style when my pallette consists of dress pants and button up dress shirt. I've been getting nearly everything tailored for about a year now. Wish ties were more acceptable at my office.
