Fashion isn't for everyone. I spend my money elsewhere. I enjoy looking and analyzing fits and lines quietly. Like reading a book, or engaging with any artistic medium. I just don't aspire to dress up. I guess I' probably wrong for it, but in my mind, it doesn't really strike me that way.

what makes them full of shit though?

you say they don't care enough but how do you know they care less? what about a guy working a shitty job barely making rent payments? there's more reason that guy would have for not buying geobaskets than just not caring enough

and I'm not saying this guy is, but for all we know, what if he was just a spoiled kid with rich parents? besides, who said fashion had to be the #1 thing you care about lest you be 'full of shit'? Can't people admire high fashion from a distance? I mean fuck, I like CCP but I wouldn't dream of buying it, it just makes no sense for my life and my budget. And there are some things I also like to spend money on which might come first, like furniture, or another hobby, or gourmet foods, or whatever.

The only reason we have for hating people who reblog stuff they can't afford is that they give the appearance of something being more ubiquitous, more common, than it ought to seem. You'd never get the impression, if you didn't use the internet, that rick owens was popular. and the internet lets people without geos make geos look popular. the high price of entry is part of what makes fashion so rewarding, and tumblr shit erodes that sense a bit, I know this; but lashing out against these people is not rational.

Nicely put. I get sucked into the trap of the ever rising standard of "normal" pushed by image reoccurance. I get down from time to time about being "so far behind" the curve, but it's just an illusion from propagation.

Thanks for vocalizing that.

absolutely nothing is wrong with being an observer. But quite frequently I see "observers" pass judgement on actual participators as though their opinions and thoughts are on the same level as the actual participants, which i think is fairly naive. For example, do you think the person who reblogs 2 detail photos of a damir doma overcoat can judge the quality of someone who wears one every other day, hangs it up in their closet, and puts it on the next day?

>>6101848

To me what makes them full of shit is that people pass judgement, and make extremely presumptuous critical judgements with no knowledge to back them up.

>you say they don't care enough but how do you know they care less? what about a guy working a shitty job barely making rent payments? there's more reason that guy would have for not buying geobaskets than just not caring enough

guy that unsurprisingly caused shitstorm here

this is exactly my perspective. it is ironic that this guy is upset that I seem to come off as superior because of my expensive collection of shoes because I knew this shit would happen as soon as I posted. I'm not better than anyone else because i have a shoe collection worth god knows how much. I am confident however that I know more about fashion than the average /fa/ poster because I do more than just talk about RO and Julius and damir doma and visvim because i wear the shit. i can authoritatively speak about the quality and whether or not it was worth the cost to me.

the reason I seem like an asshole is because I am an asshole. Here is my asshole perspective. so many people on fa are the biggest fucking posers. They run around talking about how bad ass Rick is or how other people look like dads without even being into the style - instead, they are into the idea of the style. /fa/ has romanticized the goth ninja aesthetic to a weird level where people wearing black jeans black t shirt and vans are lauded as "minimalist next level gothninja." maybe i am a huge hypocrite because I buy hype pieces like creepers and velcros and geobaskets. I don't care, I like the way they look. I also have a givenchy Rottweiler hoodie. So what?

Well I just took a long time to ramble and say nothing. Sorry. Tldr is I am an asshole that thinks I am better than CDB wearers because they are plebs and my outfit costs more than their whole wardrobe.

hands down the best way to get educated on clothing is to actually make it in my opinion. If you dont have the time/energy to do that, educate yourself about how its made. Whatever media works for you, youtube, documentaries, textbooks, old tailors magazines, asking people you know, taking clothes apart. there no one thing. Read about how the stuff you wear is put together. I dont really have any book recommendations as i only really look at textbooks, and scans of old tailors drafts and magazines and guides.

you get apprenticeships/work/whatever by talking to people and putting yourself into situations where people like that are. For example, i got that apprenticeship while i was working in a warehouse repairing old camera equipment. A person came in and told me that they ran a factory that made boots. I asked if he was interested in having someone work for him part time.

alright, I see your point. yeah, dweebs in nikes and H&M ripping on your designer clothes is annoying. well, I'd say it's a problem when anyone claims more knowledge than they have; but you can have opinions on some aspects of fits and aesthetics without having owned high fashion pieces. I don't think it's unfair for someone to voice their opinion on the fit of someone who is wearing clothes he can't afford himself; people still look like what they look like, and make what impressions they make, and none of that depends on intimate knowledge of what the cloth feels like or what it is like to wear.

>>6101911
yeah, you can speak about quality, worth the cost, and all other things that require having owned the piece. of course. and anyone who tries to argue you on these points without having also owned said pieces is a moron. but that's not what you said people would criticize. the most I see on /fa/ is people saying something does or doesn't look good, and aside from lack of a certain knowledge of how things reflect light in-person, they are legitimately eligible to judge this.

as an aside: it may be easier for you to dismiss critics when you think they're upset, but you have little reason to believe I am, nor would it make any difference to what I'm saying if I were.

I am the faggot that posted the bathroom fit.

The problem is that fashion is so subjective and what looks good or doesn't look good varies so much from person to person. I don't criticize people when they wear their Levi's and uniqlo and wingtips; all I want is the same courtesy when I wear shit that I like. Nothing is more frustrating when some completely ignorant asshole says that my fit looks like shit because I'm not wearing his uniform or conforming to his ideal. I'm not saying that my fit is perfect or even good but unless you post a fit of your own of an outfit that I personally like, I will not take advice from you.

Yes they can have their opinions, but if all they wear are nike and h&m all of their opinions about clothing and aesthetics are colored by what they put on their body. They choose to go shopping at h&m because it appeals to them, they like the aesthetic or theyd go to a different mass market store or buy thrifted clothes.

They are trying to establish a viewpoint on something thats way out of their depth. Theyre welcome to their opinion, but it really doesnt count for anything. Its the same reason why an art historians' opinion on a 1650s drawing counts a lot more than mine, they have a better education.

I don't think we can safely call him bitter, but it takes some lack of common decency to call people pieces of trash. Either he's not someone I'd personally like to know, or he's not serious in saying it.

It's no wonder nobody posts a fit when we know exactly what the point would be. Let's see what faults he can find to discredit my point without addressing the point itself. Asking someone to post a fit is a defense mechanism. But if what someone says has any value in it, and it's sufficiently communicated (I'm not saying it usually is, but it can be), no picture of the person to lend authority to the point is really necessary. And if the post contains little valuable information, then you can take it to be only as serious as knowing the stated opinion of one anonymous person. This has some small value to it.

this can be a response to

>their opinions about clothing and aesthetics are colored by what they put on their body.
I'd say that their opinions are reflected in* what they put on their body.

You presume a lot when you say you have more knowledge; in one dimension, yes. But all of us are heirs to a wealth of personal experience with looking at people and their clothing in various contexts and making aesthetic judgments of our own; and the fact that you cannot acknowledge that the opinions of these people could "count for anything" is your error. That you talk about them like they are human garbage is, well, something else entirely.

>But all of us are heirs to a wealth of personal experience with looking at people and their clothing in various contexts and making aesthetic judgments of our own

This is a very key point, that im glad you made. The thing about clothing, is that the "context" youre talking about is the person. Everyone here has a different career/education, place they grew up, family, culture, and wealth. All of these things color the way we dress, and give us the context in which we wear our clothes. The reason why other peoples opinions arent very worthy (i hesitate to say worthless) is because they have no idea why we dress the way we do, or any information about our "context" which is key in judging the quality of peoples outfits. You dont know someone better than they know themself.

I bet you think everything around you confirms all your personal biases all the time

that's how they construct themselves, personal biases. they conform to the world around you a little bit at a time until you get comfortable with how you think about everything and everything confirms what you already think. have you ever noticed how everyone you meet knows exactly how the world works? that's how they do it.

well, to me you come across as an egotist and a jackass but I'm sure that fits in your view somewhere. I'm probably out of my depth here too, right? well, cheers! and don't think too hard, lest your self-importance come crashing down.

also: The reason why some people who dress in a similar way have more valuable opinions, is because they probably have a lot more in common with you in terms of context to judge the quality of your outfit.

Its funny that youre saying that, because my whole argument was against peoples self importance, and trying to be more humble in regards to how other people dress if its much different from the way you do. And yeah im an egotist, i would never deny that.

By context I meant it in the more traditional sense; the difference between dressing like a pilgrim at a party versus dressing like a pilgrim and being a pilgrim, etc. But I'll address your point about the uniqueness of each person's own context.

You can figure out for yourself whether other people know enough to comment on your own clothing from what they say. I've received good information from people with tastes that are totally different from mine, because sometimes their observation is relevant in spite of our differences of opinion. And sometimes a totally different opinion is useful because it comes from a different perspective.

In any case my main complaint in the beginning was directed to the language of superiority; the separation of the less worthy from the more worthy, and so on. I don't think my opinion has changed.

>>6102197
well if you're against boring and against generic, ccp is neither and thus would make sense. I don't think you're right to say everyone "cums" at the name, there are a few people who think it's too weird to understand and thus mention it; and a few people who deeply appreciate the strange impressions it gives off with its odd twists and mutations on traditional clothing. Both groups are likely to drop its name in a kind of reverence whenever the question of 'out-there' comes up partially because it's hard to think of another brand that is weird in the same degree. they amount to an audible group but I don't think it's everyone.

Yeah i can agree, i have received interesting criticism, and was able to tell that the person in question knew enough to give a decent critique.

>And sometimes a totally different opinion is useful because it comes from a different perspective.

This raises another point. Useful for what? It depends on what youre trying to achieve with your outfit i suppose.

>In any case my main complaint in the beginning was directed to the language of superiority; the separation of the less worthy from the more worthy, and so on. I don't think my opinion has changed.

Well what do you think qualifies someone to have a worthy opinion? To me its always been knowledge about the topic at hand, but im sure it varies from person to person.

and I'll just add that I'm going to bed right now so if I don't respond to your next post (if there is one), that's why. I think you did a fair job of clarifying where it is you really stand, but obviously I still find the mentality of it troubling. I think you started off bolder than what you really think, which is a good thing given what you were saying, but the classification-ism of it all doesn't impress me. I'm glad you were willing for a discussion and I'm sorry I have to cut it off. It's better to air out differences of opinion than to just call each others fuccbois and say "post fit" so this has been totally worthwhile.

one last point since your post just popped up,

>Well what do you think qualifies someone to have a worthy opinion?
I'm of the belief that argument from authority is meaningless, and anyone can say something worthwhile; what qualifies their opinion's worth is how it passes inspection. This, put simply, is how it essentially is in the sciences. And that's how all people should be on a board if discussion is what the board is about.

Anyway, good night, and thanks for humoring me by responding, I do appreciate it.

Youre right, i think we will have to agree to disagree, I think a person's knowledge is incredibly important. To me there are far to many people polluting everything with uninformed ideas which id much rather not sift through. A kind of naive hope, but its what id like nonetheless. Its the same reason I take an experienced tailors advice on altering a garment more seriously than a fashion student of one year.

>Anyway, good night, and thanks for humoring me by responding, I do appreciate it
