Opium> Opiates>Heroin>Morphine

“If we could sniff or swallow something that would, for five or six hours each day, abolish our solitude as individuals, atone us with our fellows in a glowing exaltation of affection and make life in all its aspects seem not only worth living, but divinely beautiful and significant, and if this heavenly, world-transfiguring drug were of such a kind that we could wake up next morning with a clear head and an undamaged constitution - then, it seems to me, all our problems (and not merely the one small problem of discovering a novel pleasure) would be wholly solved and earth would become paradise.”

I read that page you asked me to.
Very interesting. After going through it I kind of have to agree with it.
It makes an excellent argument, and I've felt for a long time that medical science was ignoring the most salient of facts about all manner of chemicals merely out of illogical fears rooted in prohibition and the remnants of a Calvinistic loathing for simply feeling good.
On another level, I feel that various psychoactive molecules were put here for our own enrichment. In my heart of hearts, I know that it's no accident these chemicals interact with our brains the way they do. From a scientific standpoint, they could conceivably offer us a launch pad for total comprehension of our own neurochemistry. I believe that enabling a sort of mental 'super-health' is an essential item on the transhuman "to-do" list, so your link was definitely a good read.

...And call me crazy, but when it comes to getting shit done, Adderall does not hold a candle to Tramadol or Norco. For me, at least. If only the unwanted side effects could be somehow be ripped from the equation with a chemical pliers...

So glad I saw this.

I haven't touched any opiates in a long while, only because it's just ridiculous the things you have to do to maintain the habit (because even though you say once a week, it's still a habit).

So since with all this new time I have not getting high I've been thinking more about the need for opiates in ones life. Why is it so enticing? I cross examined my life on opiates and off and the base conclusion I have come to is that I was happier/more comfortable on opiates.

To come to this conclusion made me feel guilty. Like it was absolute sin to admit your life is greater with a seemingly superficial chemical that many die over and from. What's wrong with living life sober? "Everyone" else does it.

After looking into "Better Living Through Chemistry" I developed my perspective more on the subject. It just fascinates me how we as humans have the technology/chemistry to take all everyday pain and suffering away but at the same time we also push it under the rug and make it nearly impossible to procure unless you have a medical emergency.

I really think rationing soma out to the population in Brave New World isn't just a dystopian nightmare, but a sort of beacon on what the future can hold. We have all these chemicals to enhance life but there is still a stigma attached to using chemicals to enhance life if you're not disabled/sick.

Great post - thank you for that.
Imagine you were in rocket of some sort, flying over the planet. You'd see fields of Coca and Poppy growing throughout parts of Asia, South America and the Middle East. You'd see miles of tobacco in America, vineyards, fermentable grains and coffee wherever they can be supported. Marijuana being grown just about everywhere.
In first world nations you'd see massive industrial complexes and laboratories churning out designed drugs, consumer pharmaceuticals. In third world nations you'd see clandestine drug labs hidden in the hills. This is to say nothing of the ubiquitous nature of chemicals like DMT and the grain fungus Ergot.

We are a species comprised of users and we always have been. We've been altering our consciousness since time immemorial - some anthropologists even posit that a driving factor in our shift towards agriculture was the demand for the grains used to produce beer.

I think we'll get there some day - not even the strongest of human engines can defeat scientific curiosity and the ingrained desire we all have to edit our own perceptions of reality.

The main difference is societal acceptance. Acceptance exists independent of potential risks or even damage to society - just take a look at alcohol. Two thirds of domestic violence in America is committed under its influence. British researchers have decided it's more dangerous than Heroin and Cocaine -

http://www.nbcnews.com/id/39938704/ns/health-addictions/t/alcohol-more-dangerous-heroin-cocaine-study-finds/#.UYS_vuDC7WE

And yet, I can go down to the store right now and get some. Why? Because it's such a big player in our economies and our cultures.

hey poet this >>6088379 is me actually, my trip was wiped.

Thanks so much for your perspective on this matter. Sometimes to brood over subjects like this alone can leave one incapable of seeing the light to the matter.

I feel like society won't change its stigma towards these certain chemicals for awhile...as the fight against the drug war has been going on decades now and in the time span of our life I think it will be awhile till our perspective on life evolves to accept these chemicals.

The interesting thing is that civilization is rejecting the very nature of itself. We're animals, and as seen throughout countless species using mind altering chemicals found in nature, we're no fundamentally different. But civilization and modernization has shunned this instinctive curious nature of our minds.
