What colour should I paint my sitting room?

There are windows both ends so it's well lit and there's a huge stone fireplace where I plan to put a wood and coal burning stove. I'm looking for something warm, bright and airy.

Why not light greige?

it's magnolia at the moment. it looks ok under artificial light in the evening but too beige during the day in sunlight.

I'm thinking cream or a light yellow.

I'm sorry Lord Grantham, I meant the drawing room.

Yellow looks really nice with natural light but kind of washed out in artificial (depending on the bulbs you have). Maybe a yellow-based cream (the colour of buttermilk pancake batter, for example)

Which is why I'm decorating. there's original parquet flooring under the carpet. I may try to stain the stone hearth a darker color

Staining that shit is the best thing you can do for now

rustic red

Wallpaper it something dark and manly.

If you really want to make it look good, you can try putting up oak paneling. It's a lot of work, and you'll put it plenty of shop hours if you do it yourself, but I love mine.

I would love oak paneling with dark recency green or red above but I don't think I possess the skills for paneling.

I think I'll go for a cream like in the pic

Good choice. You could always do a wainscoat too. Those are really easy and look great.
