Hello, I know nothing about fashion, I've been dressing with shitty jean + shitty t-shirt + shitty black jacket + sport sneakers for years.

The sticky is random shitty infographics and absurdly handsome models driving my jealousy to the roof. I am poor. I'm tall and skinny. I am willing to change but this whole fashion world stresses me like crazy, I feel like I'm always going to look like shit or will end up looking like on of these pretentious fedora and trench-coat wearing betas. What do?

*For starters, how do I solve that money issue? Is it possible to commence a basic wardrobe on a budget? I live in France, the only store I know is H&M, and then your average grocery store. I am anxious to death whenever I enter a clothing store, but this will be dealt with.

*What shoes should I buy? I think Oxford shoes will make me appear very pretentious and will be off. What are the other cheap choices out there?

*What clothes should I buy? I understand that I should have a fitting jean, fitting plain t-shirts, but then, what the fuck am I supposed to buy? Everything seems absurdly expensive or too pretentious and austere.

Halp.

let me answer your question with another infographic. i like this one

it isn't too hard but can take time to develop your taste if you're completely new
1 pair jeans, 1 pair good sneakers, a handful of t shirts, a few sweaters and/or knits and a jacket or coat
that's the start of a basic casual wardrobe
don't try to do too much at once

So,

You need help with where to go and what to buy, yes?

Cheap clothing: Marshalls, TJMaxx, Uniqulo, Zara

What to buy: fitted chinos, jeans, tshirts, long sleeve button ups, a sweater or two, sweat shirts

What matters is the fit, the colors, and most importantly your confidence in wearing such clothing

You should lurk more and go out to the clothing stores and start trying stuff on to find what you like

It takes time and patience

If you want to look OK right now go to idk the gap or some shit and get some utilitarian gear

Noob question, but how do you proceed with the essaying room in these shops?
Do you take all the things that interest you before heading to the room? Is it ok/normal if you go back and forth a lot of time?
Pardon my autism.

if you bring in a lot of shit to a dressing room to try stuff on it looks like you are going to buy shit or that you really dont know what you want

it does not matter

i went back and forth like 7/8 times one time

bring whatever you like and try it on; that's why they are there

they only care if you steal shit, so dont

the fitting room?
take a handful of shit in with you, wait for the person to count your items to make sure you don't steal anything.
no one will care if you go in a few times

dont try to go too hard
for casual
start with some dark wash jeans and nice button up shirts and maybe some loafers
buy a navy or black peacoat for winter
a black raincoat
t-shirts are fine if you're wearing jackets

if you want to incorporate brown and patterns shorts / chinos and color schemes do so later when you've observed lots of people

If you're french, wait for the sales (June 26th) and buy basics at APC, Sandro, Kooples, COS, American Vintage, et autres petites marques françaises sympa qui se font des marges énormes et du coups peuvent solder à fond.

Oh, thanks m8, I didn't even know the date for the sales.
I'll buy what I need then, will keep informing myself in the mean time, perhaps building basic dresses and such with my gf advising me.

Thank you lads for bearing my freak outs and giving basic advice. Will keep lurking this board/lurking the infographics.

Quick reminder of the french brands quality:
Melinda Gloss > APC > Sandro > The Kooples > Zadig & Voltaire = Zara

Try to boy a suit during the sales, and then if you go to the right shops, as long as the fit is good you won't look like shit.

Lurk lurk lurk.

Buy basics, don't buy expensive shit without thinking about it for a week. If you still want it, get it. Find a certain style you like, and develop it into your own.

It depends on the brand, for APC, Melinda Gloss, Kenzo, Surface to Air and "little" brands like that yes, but I bought a Sandro scarf and Koople shoes 3 weeks after the beginning of the sales, so yeah you can wait a bit.
Plus the reductions are gonna be more important
