I think part of the novelty is that most shoes are very cleanly defined things, there's a definite difference between the sole and the midsole and the upper, and you can easily spot the lines and distinctions between each part.
With the drips, you get a sort of organic flow, something with shapes dictated by gravity and viscosity as opposed to design constraints. As another anon has said, it's all one line.
