what are your thoughts on being called a "hipster" by people based on what youre wearing?

>> No.5975036

>>5975029

don't care.

If you're under 30 and reasonably attractive you're a hipster to someone, it's unavoidable. Might as well treat it as a compliment.

I wasn't really.. Just saying that if people call you a hipster they probably are younger and aren't into fashion. In high school literally everyone called me a hipster (I wore Dsquared2, Dior, YSL, Alexander Mcqueen) when obviously I wasn't. Just because I had a flawless face and had a fitting hairut that's what I was labeled as. They're stupid but I didn't ;et it bother me.

i'm jsut hip

>> No.5975578

With the kind of person using the word hipster in that context I'd probably just take it as a complement synonymous with well dressed.

That or make a shitty hipster joke, bitches i meet are just now finding out about hipsterism and "indie" music (LOL I love mumford and sons) so they eat that drivel up.

Actually, hipsters tend to be better candidates for white collar jobs because... Idk... College?
Seriously, they might be pretentious, but they do tend to have an intellectual edge over the average person...

Which isn't saying much, since I live in America, home of some of the dumbest mother fuckers on the planet...

“Hipster” is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone else’s authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself.

It serves no conversational function and imparts no information, save for indicating the opinions and preferences of the speaker.

Meanwhile, a market myth has sprung up around the term, as well as a cultural bogeyman consisting of elusive white 20-somethings who wear certain clothes (but no one will agree on what), listen to certain music (no one can agree on this either), and act a certain way (you’ve probably sensed the pattern on your own).

You can’t define what “that kind of behavior or fashion or lifestyle” actually is, nor will you ever be able to. That’s because you don’t use “hipster” to describe an actual group of people, but to describe a fictional stereotype that is an outlet for literally anything that annoys you.

The twist, of course, is that if it weren’t for your own insecurities, nothing that a “hipster” could do or wear would ever affect you emotionally. But you are insecure about your own authenticity - “Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music because I truly like it? I’m certainly not like those filthy hipsters!” - so you project those feelings.

Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a hipster; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, “ironic” Them.

tl;dr: if you believe hipsters exist, you are a plebeian.

I'm usually called a hipster and when that "Thrift Shop" song became popular I literally got it chanted at me in the streets.

Being fair though I guess I deserved it. My usual outfit consists of a bowtie and blazer.

I'm essentially what people think of when they hear "hipster".

Since I don't live in either New York or San Francisco I question whether I could actually be a hipster at all. Cowboy shirts, facial hair, and an affinity for late eighties post punk still gets people called hipsters where I live. I mean, come on, that describes almost the entire college aged population.

And, if we'll remember our Baudrillard, we'll remember that in the era of the sign we constantly scramble for an authentic experience that has already been lost. Calling out hipsters is that scramble for authenticity.

As someone who loves bow ties, stop wearing bow ties. As much as it might pain you, you need to save these little sartorial flourishes for when they don't stand out as hilariously out of place.
