I'm not a fan of gothninja, but don't necessarily think it's "costume" tier. With that being said, yeah, that's pretty much what happened. With the inevitable influx of summerfags throughout most boards, someone on /fa/ labeled menswear as "dadcore" and it quickly picked up serious hate.

The thing about menswear is that it's really easy to fuck up, and if you DO fuck up, you look like a tryhard cock. So "dadcore," if you want to really think about it, doesn't exactly refer to menswear, but to menswear done poorly.

But it spilled over. Newfags went nuts with it, and got throbbing erections whenever they had the chance to yell "haha dadcore" at someone who actually had the balls to post a fit.

That's why, for the past 8-9 months, we've had threads in which people said that men couldn't wear accessories beyond watches, that gloves are feminine, that scarves are gay, etc. The summerfags infected a bunch of other people (who didn't have any knowledge of their own to counter the "dadcore" hate), and we ended up with countless faggots parroting stupid rules like "A man's only jewelry should be his watch." It became reddit-tier, with a disgusting adherence to uniformity, and any attempt to reason with the people shitposting just ended with something like "pfft okay keep wearing your gloves you fag" in a thread about functional winter wear.

People saying "dadcore" in reference to anything remotely formal don't know what the fuck they're talking about. They think they're being cool because they're hating on classic menswear, when really they're just repeating what they heard some other dickhead say in another thread a week earlier. They don't understand or appreciate the difference between failed menswear and real menswear, and they think they're better than anyone who tries to wear a collared shirt.

Pretty much. Like I said, I've never liked the crazier "gothninja" outfits, but I understand at least a hint of the thought process behind it, with the silhouettes and all that. I don't "get it" by any means, but I appreciate that clothes are an art and a means of self-expression, so as long as someone really has a passion about what they wear, it doesn't matter to me if they're in wool trousers or drop-crotch sweats.

gothninja exists as a subculture only because it impresses losers that grew up watching video games and jerking off to children's anime. it looks cool and edgy to them. when gothninjas post a photo on the internet, they are in control over the lighting, composition, and content of this photo. they can emulate an aesthetic seen so many times growing up in comic books/video games/movies etc. for this reason, gothninja pictures look cool and edgy to the weak, pale geeks of the world when they come to sufu, or 4chan, or stylezeitgeist, or pinterest, or thefedoralounge. when you take them outside this frame of reference, and capture someone trying to posture as "gothninja" while walking down santa monica boulevard with a slice of pizza in their hand, it becomes very obvious how pathetic their charade is. they lose control of their aesthetic in the real world and it's sad to behold. so instead they avoid being seen eating pizza, and try to slink around in the shadows smoking cigarettes, sending their mom to buy groceries so as not to be seen with luncheon meats in their hand. they avoid going to the beach because they know it's impossible to perpetuate their carefully crafted image there. it's like a symphony of spaghetti, and it makes me cringe.

I brought the term dadcore here because I vehemently hated the conservatism of the majority of posters in regards to mens fashion. it's ridiculous to say you have an interest in fashion if you just dress in clarks, jeans and an ocbd and your knowledge is limited to jcrew and gq.

I can't believe some people actually think goth ninja looks better in pictures than it does in real life. It's all about how it looks in motion (ie drop crotch, long flowing coat) and being able to see the richness of the fabric and palette up close in person.
