i think also all of these costumes r attempts to modify the human form into something more threatening or intimidating by making it unfamiliar. there seems 2 b a lot of that going on in this generation of designers too. p sure rick spoke to that effect in sum interview but im not gonna go looking for it right now

The way aesthetics vary from culture to culture is pretty fascinating, you see some interesting parallels in the meaning and purpose of a garment. In both ritual and in society you have needs for garments and accessories that transcend a lot of cultures. Practical stuff, ornate stuff, ritual masks, etc. Everyone's got one.
Where I think the fun part comes in is in thinking about what defined those designs, as in, "if everyone needs a ritual mask, why does one culture's mask look different from another similar culture halfway around the world?"
And that enters me into a place where I can wonder what shapes an artist and where these styles really came from. Was it the time and place? was it the sound of the language and its rituals that somehow interfaced with the artist and guided his hand? Where does style come from? How much of my own experience is reflected in what I wear?
Take it far enough down the line and the whole thing just kind of folds back and loops in on itself. Or maybe not, depending on how you look it.

i just wrote something on art (lit.) as reflection of changing cultural landscapes for a class. whats interesting is looking at these dus (not the dozos but say the navajos or the first pic u posted) and then looking at contemporary national/cultural costume design. the navajo fits are rooted in centuries of very concentrated almost sequestered cultural history, art, and symbology but its nuthin compared 2 the superabundance of influence that a young designer faces today

u get a lot of that "originality is dead" rhetoric out of it but i dont kno how i feel about that. recombinant offspring is just the shuffling of genes but its still an innovation

I feel like that analogy was forced. I don't think novel/interesting expression compares to genetic recombination in any way.

Like...a protein is simply a sum of its parts but a design I feel a lot of the time is definitely not equal to the sum of its parts or that it can even be expressed in some sort of algorithm. It's just something cool that happens.

And that's a fucking amazing concept, especially for someone involved in the creatives in this day and age. Can you imagine, having a single core style or design ethos being at the center of everything in your life and those of your parents, grandparents and so on?
Would the inevitable mutation occur from within, were enough time to pass? Or would style stagnate until an outside force acted upon it in some almost Newtonian fashion? Do we need each other, as cultures and as people in order to invoke the Prigogine principle that in all likelihood gave us language and architecture?

Originality is never dead, brother. Right on.

everything can be traced back to something else - but symbols don't work like that. When we shuffle and recombinate them we create things that have never existed. Each act of creation adds more to great pool and creates new potential.

what a fascinating question. not 2 make another impudently direct connection but i think to the role salons played during the enlightenment. furnaces of experience and discussion w/o which some of the greatest ideas in human history so far might not have been forged

in general the enlightenment is fascinating and relevant 2 this sort of discussion. the enormous increase in the canon of material influencing an artist w/ the rediscovery of greek/roman/antiquity work, development of systems allowing for the easier dissemination of new ideas, increase in the intellectual capability of the average citizen w/ the spread of universities, consumer literature, etc. love it.

That's what I love about the Internet, brother, and places like this one in particular. "Furnaces of experience." That's well put - The entire global network is a furnace, and out of it comes new and wonderful things.

And the cycle repeats. Makes my head spin, wondering what's around the corner in 10, 20, 30 years. Our whole culture is technology driven now, and perhaps there are a thousand undiscovered Newtons or Mozarts out there. Tiny villages in Africa with solar-powered web access, satellite phones and regenerative gene therapy, and all of it moving faster and faster and faster.

I think because of the movement of early homo homo sapiens similarities in expression are somewhat intrinsic manifestations of what would be regarded 'african' tradition but of course w/ their own cultural twist.

But I think that's probably a bit 'hopeful' in theory it's probably just a somewhat intrinsic operation of the human mind that identifies w/ certain aspects of life and as a result personifies them in different mediums although in a similar fashion throughout different cultures in different parts of the world.

I like to use a 'black box' analogy, and I think it's similar to what you're talking about.
We don't really know what happens inside the Black Box, but we do know that if we feed it variable input (language, environment, lifestyle, diet, narratives) it does some unseen calculations and outputs Culture, in all its myriad forms.

Things like prayer and language are, I think, inextricable from the human condition on some level. Even the staunchest atheists have a tendency to pray when in a foxhole, right?

So there are constants to some of these unseen equations. Fear, hope, desire, survival. Perhaps all art is essentially about solving for X in some form or another... or at least getting a fleeting glimpse inside that Black Box.

Although it is a convieniant analogy I don't think he does the working of a human mind justice in that respect. In that it's very difficult to say the neurochemical orders of one human at birth perceiving light is the same as another perceiving light for the first time. The human mind is too wonderful for simple multiplier. But maybe if we considered the 'black box' as a ever evolving mechanism the gives birth to another more complex it may make sense in that regard.

I think I'm taking the black box idea too seriously but I don't feel comfortable w/ it's simplification.

But I definitely feel that the analysis of 'black boxes' to eliminate other altered wiring in a attempt to find the 'mother black box' through perception of environment or condition is a v.interesting idea to find out what fundamentally makes a human tick and then work down from there and find out WHY these things make them tick.
