how to look fa at a formal or semi-formal event without wearing the typical suit or tuxedo?

>I want to stand out

Formal attire requires black tie, semi formal requires some kind of suit. Period. A blazer is casual and a cardigan even more so.

That tie and clip are horrible. A regular worsted wool navy tie that's not too thin and a shirt collar that reaches the jacket lapels and that actually looks decent. Lapels are a bit on the skinny suit, though that's all the rage now.

Wool ties are less formal than silk ones. That, and while I'm certain worsted wool is used in ties, perhaps referring specifically to the weave or pattern is more useful here.

Agreed on the formality part, but OP asked for things relating to both formal and semi-formal. I still think a worsted wool tie (a dark green one is also a nice choice) would do well, even in some formal situations. When it comes to pattern, I'd recommend a solid colour. Weave is of less importance, and with the above combination, he'll probably dress better than 90% of his peers.

When in doubt, dress down. It will give you a carefree aire if you do it with confidence.

Example: If most attendees will be in suits, wear a sport coat and khakis and no tie. Bo one will care if you do this because the whole world is casualized nowadays.

>> No.5924430

Black tie, and White tie are two variations of formal. Black tie is LESS formal than white tie. Some consider it semi-formal, some don't.

Of course, here on /fa/, simply wearing a jacket with anything gets you called formal. So I guess this is really all irrelevant.

I've never seen anywhere else where a tweed suit is called anything but entirely informal.

Wool ties aren't formal. Wool ties are almost too casual for a semi-formal event. And you really can't have clothing that is both formal and semi-formal because formal clothing refers (nowadays anyway, the white tie, black tie distinction, while correct is not how anyone views the situation) to black tie. So, unless you can cook up a way to wear a tuxedo in a semi-formal environment, you're housed. The best the OP can do is buy a grenadine tie in a solid, conservative color. They're not technically formal, but their about as formal as long ties get.

>> No.5924520

>>5923822
Formal can be done interesting. I like to do a black peak lapel suit instead of a full-on tuxedo, plus a white or white-grey striped open collar shirt and strong pocket square and accessories. You could also do something interesting with a silk scarf under your suit coat.

>> No.5924659

Why are you all calling sport coats blazers? Blazers are generally naval or uniform oriented, usually with metal buttons.

There's nothing wrong with wearing sportcoats cut from coarser fabrics, like tweeds, with a good pair of dark denim jeans.

There's a large difference between executing denim/jacket combinations well, and throwing on an ill fitting silk dinner jacket with cheap levis.

>>5924703
Sure. You can wear a white dinner jacket. You can wear a shawl collar. You can pick a cummerbund instead of a waistcoat. You can wear a shirt with a turn down collar instead of a wing collar. However, when an invitation requests formal attire, it means you had better come in a tuxedo. In all other situations you can express more play along the continuum. With formal attire, you have a lot of options, but you still need to wear a tuxedo.

A dinner jacket is pretty much necessary for after six formal affairs. I don't see anything wrong with this. The entire point of codified formality is to be limited to a small set of options.

>> No.5924840

>>5924822
Well, despite it being a troll post, it does bring up an important point I missed. Daytime formal events do exist (I guess, other than weddings I can't fathom what one would look like, an inauguration maybe) and in these situations, as you say, you wouldn't want to be wearing a tuxedo. And even in the evening, you could still wear white tie. I guess my point was just that you can't really expect to go less formal than black tie and get away with it.

>> No.5924869

>>5924840

True. And you also technically have White Tie for after six, but there are few occasions for that, especially for the average guy. Maybe an evening wedding?
