looking for a scarf to appease my gf's mother.
need suggestions, id rather not spend over 50.

It depends on the country but I feel you're going to have trouble finding a scarf that's not made of synthetic garbage at that price point. You want 100% wool or some other natural fiber for a quality scarf. I'm in Canada and can get 100% merino scarves at La Maison Simons for $70 but I don't know what's available where you live.

Cashmere is softer and warmer than merino but also at least twice as expensive and, as you alluded, more high maintenance. I got a merino scarf for Christmas and I'm happy with it, though I've never had a cashmere scarf so I might not know what I'm missing.
