I have one; it's a Waltham pocket watch, 'Vanguard' movement. The movement is a very good one, capable of being within +/- 2 seconds a day if it's been serviced recently. They were used in the railroad service, but also available for purchase by wealthy individuals. Mine is a slightly rarer 'sidewinder' version with the crown at 3 instead of 12, and a 24-hour feature on the dial that is colloquially called a 'Canadian' dial.

Movement first:

The movement decoration is 'okay', but nothing comparable to modern Swiss haute horlogerie. Still, it's lovely to have. They can be bought for around 1k USD in decent condition, though if you do buy one, make sure you get it to a watchmaker to service before you use it. These things are old, and sometimes missing parts or have incorrect replacement parts. Mine even needed a new mainspring after the original one popped one day...thank goodness my watchmaker had original mainsprings for this particular model.

I recommend it if you're interested, but be aware that there aren't many social situations where having a pocket watch will be considered in any way normal.

>>18195549
No, it's larger than modern ones. If it was on a strap, it would be around 45-48mm or so. It's lovely as a pocket watch.

One last thing about owning one: they are finicky when it comes to positional variance for the rate, so if you have it 'tuned' for being crown-up (like when you're wearing it in a pocket), it'll keep great time in that orientation but perhaps go too fast when lying dial up. Pocket watches were worn in a pocket and spent most of the day upright; some people have hooks that they can hang the watch on overnight to keep it in position and thus keep the rate. Power reserve varies (and there are variants of the Waltham that have power reserve indicators), but ultimately you should wind it once a day at the same time every day, and then you can winrar.

Good luck. You could also look at Illinois, Hamilton, or Elgin pocket watches. Ball pocket watches are far too expensive for what they are, but the other ones are great.

As a vintage movement, it's not uncommon at all; that's one of the reasons there are so many spare parts for them, even to this day (i.e. new-old-stock). It's sheer coincidence that mine is the same though; I don't know which Anime your pics are from.

It would be, but it can't be done. the dial and the day/month wheels aren't co-axial, so the angle of the brushing would always be off and it would probably end up looking worse.

Mass appeal can only mean one thing : being the lowest common denominator.
Rolex is, this fact is undeniable, the best known maison today. It is the watch every uneducated consumer aspires to. Understanding this is what begins to separate one from the plebe.
Rolex, to put it in a way one of its owners would understand, is thinking Olive Garden is fine dining. After all, it is more expensive than Burger King and you may even need to place a reservation beforehand. It is exclusivity in the hands of millions, an elusive presence you will find everywhere. It is everything but exceptionnal, special, it is the status symbol of those who need it. And a man with status does not need a symbol for he has his status and that alone speaks for itself.
This simple, logical truth will anger the simple mind. "Cope!" he will scream, believing you are jealous of him who owns one of the most common and mundane pieces one could imagine. He is to be dismissed. "You are bitter!" he will cry, unable to even imagine he may not have been correct in his decision to adhere to the glib norm of the unaware. He is to be dismissed.
Would you give the time of day to a supposed cinéphile who believes himself legitimate after watching a C. Nolan film and "getting it"? To the man who thinks himself a connaisseur of the letters for using the term Kafkaesque after reading The Metamorphosis (not before skipping the foreword, naturally) ?
> These are lower still than the ignorant masses simply for believing themselves higher. They are to be ignored.
Rolex is Ronald McDonald in a three piece suit. He tells you that you are lucky : the McRib is available today. The common man believes he is getting an exceptionnal treat. The discerning man may enjoy the sandwich for what it is but will not be fooled into thinking it fine dining.

The first day I got back my older 1861 from servicing, I scratched it against the handrail of my staircase....what a pain in the ass, so scratches will happen. Funny though; they never happen to watches I'm very careful with. Maybe that means I should be more careful with my modern Speedies.

Thoughts on solar powered and/or self-updating watches?

Pic related updates its time using Bluetooth, connected to a phone, but some other Casio watches have a radio receiver which picks up a radio time signal, so it can keep itself in time (I think they automatically adjust themselves for daylight savings time).

What cheap watches (under $500) have any vague amount of dignity?

I would say Casios have an honest quality to them that's not reflected in aspirationally-branded shit like Citizen and Orient. It makes someone look like they care about whatever they're doing a little bit more, even if it's just being a barista.

I would say a Seiko 5 is acceptable, in that it signifies you're working your way up the ladder. You may be broke but you have upwardly mobile aspirations

Pre-owned Seiko SARB033 is still the best watch you can buy under 500$. Being made in Japan exclusively for the domestic market gives it novelty. >What does this mean?
It's refers to the watch's reference or model number. Older Rolexes had four-digit reference numbers, like the Submariner model 5513. Those are considered vintage these days.

Starting in the late 80s through the early 2000s, Rolex transitioned to five-digit numbers. (When a new model was introduced or an existing model was updated, it would get a new reference numbers.)

Since the 2000's, Rolex has been using six-digit numbers.

Five-digit Rolexes are considered the sweet spot between the robustness and technological innovations of the six-digit era, while still retaining most of the warmth and old-school toolwatch character of the vintage four-digit era.

Four-digit watches are typically quite old, expensive, and will be fragile due to their age.
Six-digit watches are too large, too gaudy, and look too much like jewelry and not like the sports watches they originally were.

It also hit at just the right moment in the 1970s when hallmarks of luxury began to transition. It wasn't 100% in what you owned, but in your experiences. The truly wealthy had the free time to go on exotic vacations and do exciting sporty activities. A thin gold watch would not be suitable for that.
Someone who had a lot of money and stuff but who worked themselves to death was not wealthy, just well-compensated. They wore the gold dress watches with their suits.

Older two tone DJs were less blingy.

Even though the materials and the case dimensions have not changed, Rolex decided to polish the tops of the lugs instead of giving them a brushed finish.
The result is that an old TTDJ has a little gold sparkle, while a new one has a bright gleam.

Now, for a watch that's supposed to be a little more ostentatious like a TTDJ, that's not necessarily a cardinal sin and it's still a very, very good-looking watch, but it's a little sad to think of what we've lost.

Definitely, you want to see how it behaves in natural light, but take a look at this older one with the brushed lug tops:

I think there's a lot of leeway in this regard. Cartier is the obvious choice. You could go AP/PP/VC/ALS/Breguet for higher end. Piaget or Chopard if you want something a little out of left field. A complicated JLC or Blancpain if you're more of a STEM-nerd. Hell, even Rolex made a lot of pretty neat-looking Cellini models over the years.

As long as the quality is there, you can let your personal style shine, in the same way that your lifestyle shines through your choice of sports Rolex. e.g. the Explorer guy wants an understated field watch, the Daytona guy doesn't mind standing out, etc.

Yeah. Now, I don't want to say one is better than the other; it comes down to personal taste.

Like you said, you want to see them in person. In person, the brushed tops might seem a little dull. The DJ is also a relatively small watch, so maybe a little shine on a 36mm watch isn't the same as a 44mm full-polish Breitling.

1. The "I've Made It" Flex:
- Rolex Daytona (because nothing says "I'm rich" like a waitlist)
- Patek Philippe Nautilus (for when you want to one-up the Rolex crowd)
- G-Shock x Supreme collab (to pretend you're still "street")

2. The "I Watch Too Much YouTube" Starter Pack:
- Rolex Explorer (because some guy on YouTube said it's "underrated")
- Grand Seiko Snowflake (to prove you're "in the know")
- Casio F-91W (ironically worn to show you're not a snob)

3. The Midlife Crisis Special:
- Rolex Submariner (bought right after the divorce)
- Cartier Santos (to impress the new girlfriend half your age)
- G-Shock Rangeman (for when you pretend to go "adventuring")

4. The "I Think I'm James Bond" Collection:
- Omega Seamaster 300M (because you've seen every 007 film 20 times)
- Omega Speedmaster (in case NASA calls for that moon mission)
- G-Shock Mudmaster (for your imaginary special ops missions)

5. The "Actually Practical" Set (but where's the fun in that?):
- Tudor Black Bay 58 (all the Rolex style without the waitlist BS)
- Longines Master Collection (dress watch that won't bankrupt you)
- Garmin Fenix (because let's be honest, you need to track those steps)
