I don't get why people think cuffing looks "cool". The only time I ever cuffed was when I was a kid, because parents usually get you pants that are longer so that you don't outgrow them quickly, since you're at a growing age. But if you're a grown ass adult, then just fucking buy your pants in the right length or get them hemmed. Nobody cares about your stupid selvedge lines.

the two in the middle with the big cuffs are wearing their jeans correctly for the time period the rest of their clothes are. hemming your jeans wasn't very common until the 1950's and really didn't become the norm until more like the 1960's-70's. they're obviously trying to dress in a vaguely pre-ww2 style.
the guy on the far left has the tokyo/reddit cuffs and the outside guy has double cuffs, both look bad. if they were cuffing to show their boots on a pair of jeans hemmed for sneakers it is acceptable but that is not what's going on.

you start seeing guys hemming their jeans and wearing them outside of work wear in the 1950's. if you're wearing older style clothes it can look 'off' to have the jeans hemmed perfectly. the reddit guys in that pic look 'off' because they're mixing different vaguely kinda the same time periods of clothes with no rhyme or reason.

cuffing remained a popular choice until the 70s especially with certain subcultures like bikers and also with tradesmen.
it made practical sense when your jeans were work wear to cuff. they come in one size. if you ruin the hem you roll them up or down a little bit to get brand new fabric at the hem. it didn't make sense to bother altering them unless you were doing something that had snagging hazards.

cuffing when you are wearing boots is normal. but it should be cuffed to the top of the boot. its done so you can have a pair of pants cropped to the right length so you can ride a motorcycle or whatever with nothing around your feet to snag or catch on anything, or in today's context to show off your boots. hemming the pants that high would mean you can't wear the same pants with shoes/sneakers.
nothing reddit about cuffing the way marlon brando does in this pic.
but the way the redditors on far left and far right have it cuffed at the bottom of their boot just to show off their selvedge is dorky.
especially the far left guy. cuffs look super goofy on taper cut jeans unless they're full on skinny jeans cuffed right at the top of a pair of boots.

a cuff is also a really good spot to catch sparks and hot slag, so anything involving welding, grinding, smelting, etc is right out.

theres probably over 100 jap brands that make pre war repro jeans i wouldn't even know where to start. superfuture, styleforum, and fedoralounge have a lot of info on them. tcb jeans are a good entry to that style of jeans they're priced a bit lower than most brands who make repro but the quality's in my top 10.
there's also brands like evisu who do modern non repro cuts heavily inspired by these, sometimes with the cinch.
seriously just go on sufu spend a few hours lurking the superdenim board half the threads' are about brands who do repro stuff and most of the old posts are still relevant info unless the brand went under or the style was limited.
yahoo auctions japan and rakuten and denimio are good for sourcing jeans.
1930's and earlier era jeans have the cinch. size up on them try to make it so cinch undone = your max weight fluctuation and cinch done = your weight when you cut, if you work out. no more needing 2-3 pairs of jeans!

yeah it all depends what you're doing. a farmer might want the big cuffs. someone climbing skyscraper beams might opt to hem or even have straps put at the hem of their jeans -- i had a pic of that a second ago but lost it durr. rolling your jeans like picrel was also popular. metalworkers and welders i know prefer double knee canvas pants to jeans in the first place because they're pretty stationary and the extra protection is worth the hit to breathability.

also! don't just buy your normal waist size.
first of all you wear them at your actual waist not your hips like most jeans, so your size will be smaller.
it's very easy to measure yourself just put a tape measure around yourself right over the top of your hips (right below your belly button) for ~13" rise and slightly lower or higher for other rises in that era.
then also selvedge jeans are NOT usually vanity sized so go off their size charts provided.

some of those chinese amekaji brands do repro, not sure what ones, but avoid the ones who cater to modern slimmer cut like sauce zhan. i've bought other shit from all the brands who would do repro they're good as long as you scan over the measurement chart and pics for wonkiness. i usually re-sew my buttons on chink stuff because they are lazy and don't shank them but that doesn't apply to jeans anyways.

the only trade where cuffing has ever been popular is ironworkers who hang steel beams where they are walking on narrow beams and they have to be very careful of where they step and having cuffs allows them to see their feet properly

in no other trade is it useful to have cuffs, shit just accumulates in your cuff like mortar, sawdust, dirt, drywall, etc

Why do you think that's a relevant response? The pants are too long and need to be hemmed, that's the complete end of the story here. I'm aware people long ago in the past also needed to hem their pants. What do you feel like is the relevance of that factoid?

you'll see the big cuffs in most pre war photos of farmers, miners, and pretty much everyone wearing denim.

>The pants are too long and need to be hemmed, that's the complete end of the story here.
you're operating in a frame of reference that didn't exist until the 1960's. jeans weren't a fashion item back then, the thought of hemming them for fashion reasons crossed nobody's mind. people hemmed their jeans occasionally for function but that's about it. catalogues sold jeans in 1 size: very long. the big cuffs are a historic nod to the origins of denim. and they look good. you need your eyes/taste checked. as i've demonstrated it looks excellent when the men being photographed aren't reddit basedboys.
