>I can't comment on this, because I don't have a point of reference and haven't gotten to handle one, but I'm inclined to believe you're being disingenuous or exaggerating a lot.

No exaggeration.

The quality of the case and the bracelet do not match at all. On the case, the brushing is a much finer grain than on the bracelet. The bracelets are actually made in the same facilities as Seiko5 bracelets. The endlinks' fit is sloppy.

Worst of all is the lack of microadjust of any kind. (The way that you fine tune the fit.) Newer clasps have on-the-fly adjustment so you can easily change the fit over the course of the day if your wrist swells or shrinks a little. Older clasps (think the old Rolex clasps with all the holes on the sides) required you to make adjustments with a toothpick.
Grand Seiko offers you a half-link. That's it. If it's too tight or too loose, tough cookies.

Twenty years ago, that would have been annoying but expected. Today, it's inexcusable. Even sub-thousand dollar microshitters have clasps with on-the-fly microadjustment.

How to look for quartz watches with multiple ticks per second?
Grand Seikos and chicken Citizens have the typical 1 tick per second, while <$1000 chronographs, like the Speedtimer have a sweeping, mechanical like second hand.
Is it a marketing issue, and they don't want their quartz lines directly competing with mechanics? I cannot believe it's a big problem putting gears with more teeth inside the movement.

It's not just GS that doesn't offer microadjustment. The Cartier Santos doesn't have any either, for example. The Omega ATs don't have it either, if I remember correctly. But yes, it is unacceptable.

Usually if it's got a sweep, they'll mention it in the advertising copy, or they'll make a mention of being high frequency quartz, like the Bulova Precisionist. Grand Seiko Spring Drive sweeps as well.
It's not really a marketing issue, it's more of what customers expect. It's been close to 50 years at this point that customers have been trained that quartz watches tick once per second.

it's a power issue, watches use less power when they tick just once per second. Look up Bulova high frequency for a spring drive homage and Seiko VH31 for a mechanical cope.

It's also very ungainly on the wrist. The proportion of thickness to diameter will make this thing feel like a tuna can.

38mm x 45mm x 15mm (FIFTEEN!) with 18mm lug width will feel like a little cube on the wrist. I'm not sure where they could have found some space to make it thinner but they should have looked harder.

By contrast, the 38mm Zenith Chronomaster is 38mm x 47mm x 13mm which is much more proportional.

Yeah, I did not want to get into nitty gritty about how much of thickness is because of the domed crystal, just raw, top-line numbers as an example.

I assume you mean crystal?

It's not hard but it does require some specific tools. A case knife to pop the bezel off (may not be necessary depending on the watch), a crystal press and a set of dies to pop the old one out. Again, depending on the watch construction, you may need to remove the movement. There's no one set standard.

Read a couple guides and/or watch a couple of videos. It'll be difficult the first time but eventually it can become very mindless and routine.

Incidentally the replica watch forums are great sources of information on this because they're constantly swapping out parts to make their reps more faithful to the original. (The dial from X, the bezel from Y, even some genuine parts, and so forth.)

It will be a little older, but Rolex will still service them. You don't have to worry about them fucking up collectibility value because they have none. These are not Double-Red Sea-Dwellers. They made millions of AKs, OPs, and OPDs.

For around 3k you can get a good used watch from a good brand. You could even get a gold watch if you wanted. You don't have to settle for cheap microshitters that you'd never be able to sell once you got tired of them.
Do your own research, see what's out there.
Like, here's an example: (I'm not saying these specific models are what you should go for.)
- A used Tudor Black Bay 58 goes for around 2500-2600 USD,
- A used Cartier Tank Solo, men's size will be around the same
So you spend 5 grand and you're basically done with watches for life with a sports+dress pair of watches that will make any bittercel here seethe so hard he'd shit his pants. You could definitely do even better than my 3 minutes on c24.

Yeah I'm not too familiar with terms, sorry
I'm just wondering how big of a downside a mineral glass crystal is compared to sapphire, taking into account that you could in theory just swap it if it gets too damaged to keep using.
I noticed the crystal itself is pretty cheap on ali but the replacement videos I've seen use a bunch of tools so I wasn't sure if it was worth trying that in comparison to getting a shop to do it

It's not as big of a deal as you think. Mineral glass is still hardened glass. It's not like it's made of spun sugar.
The only real reason you'd want to do it yourself is to learn a new skill. A watchmaker won't charge too much to swap. Probably less than the cost of the tools.

>Can someone explain why dive watches became so desired?

Diving, scuba and snorkeling, arose as a leisure activity in the 1960s at the same time as the idea of leisure-as-luxury really started to take hold in pop culture. Before the war, luxury was stuffy waistcoats and pocket watches, after the war, luxury was being able to spend a couple weeks in the Caribbean or Mediterranean swimming.

The dive watch, at that time, was a tool. You didn't buy it at jewelers, you bought it at the same store you bought your air tanks and swim fins. It was a piece of kit. Wearing one outside the water marked you out as someone who engaged in a fun, luxurious, but also adventurous activity. Lots of early dive watches' dials were marked with the dive shop that supplied them in addition to the manufacturer.

The classic scene from "Goldfinger" where Bond is wearing a Submariner in the Mexican cantina with a was more of a tell back then. Now, we don't think anything of it. Back then, audiences were primed to think "Oh, he didn't change his watch out. Someone's going to notice and catch Bond! They'll notice a guy in a tux wearing [today's equivalent of a giant dive computer]! But Bond doesn't give a fuck."

From there, they became shorthand for "sports watch for the adventurous type."

It baffles me that people don't understand something this simple. It's fashion, and in fashion, Branding is the most important thing. Quality is secondary (if at all).
Just like a great watchmaker once said

which isn't bad if you compare it to the rest of the fashion world. Bags that cost 30$ go for 5K

Yes, exactly. If you buy seikos and hamiltons and whatever other entry level watches and you enjoy them that's fine. I'll even give a pass to homage watches as long as they're honest about what they are. But if you're wearing a watch that says Rolex on it but it wasn't made by Rolex that's fucking gay. Again, unless you're traveling in Haiti and just trying to keep your Gen from getting hatcheted off your arm.

>Again, unless you're traveling in Haiti and just trying to keep your Gen from getting hatcheted off your arm.
I genuinely think that's the single worst time to wear a fake watch. If I were to travel to a shithole, I would specifically try to wear a watch that DOESN'T look expensive to prevent getting my arm chopped off
Why wear something as blatantly "rich" as a Rolex when going to a shithole? To show off? That's a horrible idea, people talk and you'll end up in trouble.
Instead of wearing a Submariner, just wear a Casio Duro instead if you want the same style, or as I said, go for a style that looks less expensive

The dealers decide who gets a watch. If there’s a lot of people waiting for a certain type of watch, it makes sense for them to prioritize their best customers once they get a shipment from Rolex. Why the customer couldn’t place a personal order to rolex via the AD, I don’t know.

Yeah, I'm aware of the process.
Rolex markets their watches so good, they can't keep up with the demand. Additionally, they want to control second hand market and third party repairs. That's why selling your watch back to them improves your "relationship".
However people are totally fucking braindead if they're going to such lengths to get a mass produced product. And shills on social media only worsen the situation by giving you and advice to strengthen brand's market dominance

I feel like I'd rather have the bluro or the pure black, the red second hand looks way cleaner on the black & the two tone bezel looks a bit odd. Why did they start doing that? I could maybe see it for GMT to indicate whether it's offset by 12h or not, but for divers?
