Fair enough.
In my mind a cope is down to the wearer, not the observer.

If you bought a Seamaster because you love it, not a cope.
If you bought a Seamaster because you couldn't afford a Rolex, it is a cope.

If you bought a Seamaster and didn't say why, it's irrelevant whether anyone else calls it a cope because they don't know why you bought it.

It would honestly be better if they went entirely defunct instead of being a zombie brand like Universal Genève (we'll still need a few years for the Breitling acquisition to shake things up, first is RnD and market research time) still selling KonTikis in awful colour schemes hoping it will pick steam up as it did for Zodiac.

Maybe look at it this way. They're getting a new factory on line, they're working on upping production. None of the new releases require any additional tooling apart from the gold DSSD and platinum 1908. Those are low-volume models.

The mother-of-pearl diamond-dial Daytona, they'll make maybe 100 of those combined over the next five years. Pieces like that are just to have something to display at trade shows.

If they came out with a new...hypothetically...39mm Explorer III or something that would be really cool, but it would mean they would not be able to increase Daytona and GMT production because they'd be making the Explorer III. What the market really wants is simply more of the existing models.

Here's what you do. You touch grass. Real grass. And don't just reach your hand out the door. You confidently walk ten meters away from your house, you reach down and touch that grass.

Then you'll realize no one in the real world cares if Longines is a pathetic brand or not. If you think the watch looks cool, buy it, wear it.

Buy vintage, Longines used to be really, REALLY good. In the 30s, 40s and 50s, they occupied the same place Omega would today : they could do it all in terms of style and technique.
>>18078224
They died with the Spherodrive flop. It was their last bit of innovation, the last chance they would get to show that they could still do something, anything. They still had some of their staff, they still had access to some of their former manufacturing capacities.
But it was too little too late and no one was impressed by zirconium bearings (except me, I'm impressed. But not as impressed by how ugly the watches they made for such a movement were. Then again, hyperfocusing on the tiny, irrelevant technical details and forgetting to do an attractive design might also be the most Eterna thing imaginable)

It depends on what you grew up with, I think. My father has a 1016 that he bought new in the 80s and has worn it just about every day since. He's worn it everywhere, skiing, camping, mountaineering, beaten it to fuck. That's what I think when I think "Explorer". the glossy dial and polished numerals look like jewelry by comparison.

The idea is interesting but the execution is that awful late 90s - early 2000s style. Truly just the worst period for watches.

I'd make the numerals smaller and thinner, then ditch the unnecessary "Royal Oak" and "Automatic" text. I don't know about the radially oriented numerals either. If you arranged them all vertically it would probably start to look too much like an IWC Pilot, though.

No, it's pretty quiet and the movement is balanced enough to where it doesn't have something like the Valjoux Wobble. Unless I see it, I can't tell if it's spinning one way or the other.

I had a newer JLC Polaris with an 899 in it and that thing made a real annoying, loud, "whizzzzzz!!' when it spun in the free direction. It was so annoying I actually returned it when the AD demonstrated that they all make that noise.

Yeah, mine has ceramic bearings. I've been told they make it louder, but I think it's just a design issue, because mine is silent.

I think the difference is that mine, the 975, was the first Autotractor movement and they were really focused on making it good, then they started cutting corners.

The Autotractor set of technologies was pretty neat. Some of them were dispersed across the range, like the more efficient unidirectional winding and ceramic bearings; other things like a full balance bridge with a large, free-sprung balance, were not.

I think the thing with the VCOS, unlike the APRO or Nautilus, is that it wasn't a perfect design out of the box.
>AP and PP hit the bullseye on their first try, why not VC?
And that's just unfair, I think.
The VCOS is a work in progress and each generation has been refined and improved upon.

The first gen looked very 90s, was small, and had a bracelet that, while well-engineered, did not match the case. It still looked too dressy and not sporty enough

The second gen refined the bracelet to make it flow better with the case, gave it a modern size, but got rid of some of the 90s stuff like the vaulted nameplate. Give it a sportier hand set and dial. Now it actually looked like a sports watch and not a dressy watch trying to look tough.

The third gen further refined the case shape, made the bezel less busy while still being distinctive, and dialed back some of the sporty features that should have stayed in the 2000s like the giant numerals and the crown guard. They made it more elegant, without losing any toughness.
The improvements to the bracelet, particularly the clasp, are immeasurable, along with the movemebt and the overall finishing that was improved as the VCOS was no longer an entry-level piece by the third gen.

The fourth gen, when it comes out will probably be even better.

Wait...

Why's it titanium or gold only?
Why does it still have 'BLANCPAIN' carved into the side of the case?
Why does it have 21.5mm fucking lugs?
Why on earth is it 14.5mm thick?
Why isn't there a no-date version?

That's not a bad idea, it'll definitely work its way into my rotation. The h-link bracelet just felt so perfect for so long. I've tried it on other straps before (sailcloth and nylon), but they never stuck. This one is a Horween strap from Bisonstrap. I'm sure there are better options out there, but this seems serviceable, and smells amazing lol. The clasp is actually a Seiko deployant from an Alpinist.
I haven't actually had this serviced, although I really should. The crown has the slightest crunchy feeling to it as of late, so it more than likely needs a clean at least.

Rolex finishing is very unimpressive since their dials are mostly empty and everyone in the mid to upper four-figure range can do sharp printing and applied indices as much as they can.
Same goes for quality if we're being honest and the higher you get in Rolex's range, the worse it is for them. They don't have any serious complications or anything with notable craftsmanship since they are one of the most industrial brands at this price point.
