/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - SUMMER SOON EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

Styleforum has a GMTO for a C&J Islay in tan scotch grain with a ridgeway sole.
https://www.styleforum.net/threads/crockett-jones-mto-central.362536/page-846#post-11773029

They have 5 participants and need 1 more.

It's gonna be like 750 quid with the half bellows tongue, or 615 without VAT for non-UK buyers.

Personally I think the dark brown scotch grain looks best, but I don't understand why C&J offers the RTW models of the Islay and Coniston with Dainite instead of Ridgeway as default. Who wants dainite on a boot? Or anywhere at all.

Can't at the moment. Yesterday I noticed somethin moving under the arch of my feet and when I checked there was a small wrinkle on the insole. The waist of the insole at the inner side is not fully attached to the floor of the boot, but on the other boot it is. I'm guessing a bit of specific glue would do.

Need help,
How do I make chelsea boots (or any leather dress shoe) more comfortable?

I bought some chelsea boots and wore them a few times. They hurt my feet too much. It feels like my feet are crushing in from the sides. My exact size hurt so I bought a half size bigger. At first they were great but after an hour or so my feet started hurting.
I've put a soft insole in them, and tried wearing different like thin socks, business socks, even thick work socks but nothing seems to help.

My first pair I bought were amazing. They were comfortable and I wore them all day, but then suddenly I couldn't wear them for more than an hour without my feet hurting. I didn't have any foot injury or anything, I just started wearing running shoes.

I don't want to let them just sit in the closet as I paid a lot of money for them.

Any advice is appreciated.

Cobblers have shoe stretchers, you can ask them to stretch it in terms of width.
I've never done it but what other choice do you have?

Any insole etc will only make it worse as the volume will be reduced - if anything I would try to remove the existing insole if it just comes off without being ripped or unglued.

The footbed will eventually sink a bit from use and give you a little extra volume.

I have wide feet and I buy most of my dressier shoes from TLB now because I can go up to H-width on MTOs for all of their normal lasts, it's a really good fit. I think they really have the duck-feet market cornered with width options on all their lasts.

What work shoes would you recommend for an office job in the spring/summer?
My main shoes are a pair of pic related, but with the chunky soles and everything I expect them to look quite out of place in the summer.

Is there anything lighter but still offered in black or in other dark colours? I don't think I can go to the office wearing tan loafers lol.

If you want to risk the fit get a loafer

Black boxcalf leather shouldn't feel supple at first wear, this is true of both Weinheimer and Annonay black boxcalf which I've tried.
It might still be full grain calfskin, maybe not boxcalf or not by these tanneries, the stitching doesn't look bad either.

The problem is the sole, it looks plasticky, fake welt, the sort of thing you'd find in $50 mall shoes.
Also the fact that they sell "alligator" shoes that is actually a patern embossed on calfskin just reinforces the idea that they are cheapening out and cutting corners.

The liner is dropping. The reason I initially looked with my hand is I noticed how much more wrinkly the leather was compared to the waxed flesh. I just hope it doesn’t get worse so that it does become uncomfortable.

Came back from backpacking in 'Nam and had to stop by Fugashin's main store in the South since I've been pretty intrigued and on the fence about their shoes for quite a while, so why not while I'm in the country right?

I'm fairly sure they're made in the South of 'Nam but have a head cordwainer/collaboration from Tokyo - not surprising considering the Japanese expat scene in both the North and South of the country.

Ended up loving their shoes on foot more than I expected, so got two pairs. Total damage was about 400-600 AUD, not sure how much that is in Ameribucks. Definitely would've gotten a third pair if I had suitcase space, but as I was backpacking and only wanted to buy a small suitcase to stash souvenirs on the flight back home I decided against it. Also prefer having shoes from different makers and regions, so two from one maker is pretty much enough for me. Loafers were ~350 AUD and double monks were ~200-250 AUD if I remember correctly.

Quality (lasts/construction/finishing) is incredible for the price. Only noticeable thing apart from that is leather/suede quality - still pretty spectacular for the price IMO, good thickness of leather where it matters and the leather used for the linings are impeccable, but could be thicker in general/suede could be fluffier. For the price though, definitely happy with both the double monks (which i got blake stitched for sleekness) and penny loafers.

Their boots were also very well done but I'm more inclined towards Eur*pean bootmakers.

On a note though - the Central region is well known as a hub for "quality" leather goods and shoes amongst tourists, but I would avoid getting men's leather shoes there - leather quality can vary greatly from middling to decent, but lasting and finishing is not great from what I saw. Would most likely only ever get leather bags/accessories or casual women's shoes. Most of them outsource production to the same studio/factory in the Central region too.

>> No.18080011

>>18080003
Also, Fugashin were the only quality makers I had the urge to peek in on when in the country - I've heard a lot of 50/50 good/bad about CNES, and I didn't have the time to get MTM so I didn't visit Hepahestus Shoemaker (who I hear is basically the guy to go to in the region and makes the best shoes in 'Nam full stop - there's a reason he has a growing fanbase and clients worldwide for all his MTO shoes now).

Is there some point where you'd say the boot is too old to justify paying full retail? Recently bought a pair of Red Wings which I am gonna return(not because they were too old, just wasn't a boot for me), but also noticed the boots were made in 2022. So they were 2 years old. I wouldn't return them for that reason but maybe some of you would.

Also is there some point where retailers actually send them back to the manufacturer if they start getting too old? Like 5 years or something. It would be 5 years of the leather drying and aging after all, for a boot that is supposed to be sold as new.

Another good fit for me was Alden Trubalance on E width
Might actually be wider than TLB's H-Width but I wear it with wool socks and it's great

The only complaint I have with the Aldens is the insole is a little hard on the front half of the shoe, but there's enough volume to fit in a thin foam insole and I've gone on hikes with them after that and it's perfect.

Actually my TLB Chukkas are also half a size larger so I can put in an insole and wear thicker socks if needed, it's very comfy. Despite being pointy nothing touches, not even my pinky. It's very good.
