>> No.18072632

>>18072476
>>18072476
You don't. You won't just stumble upon good quality leather by accident. Companies will usually state the kind of leather they are using and sometimes the tannery it comes from, otherwise it's just generic leatherslop, and outside the big leather shoe brands there aren't really any alternatives that aren't niche brands that have like a 6 month waiting list or cost thousands of dollars.
Now if you just want something that won't disintegrate within months mostly check the construction of the shoe

>> No.18072643

>>18072476
Well as far as I know if it isn’t corrected grain or ”genuine leather” or some other weird shit it is full grain so it would be easier just to avoid corrected grain. Cheaper brands like GH Bass, Sperry, Sebago, Cole Haan etc. use corrected grain and more expensive brands like John Lobb, Edward Green, JM Weston, Carmina etc. definitely don’t use corrected grain. So if it’s cheap let’s say under 300 € be wary and look if it says that it’s corrected grain and ask if it does not say. They also have this really high shine which can be hard to tell especially from just pictures. Also brands like Jay Butler sell loafers for under 300$ and they say that their shoes are in fact full grain so you know not everything under 300€ is shit but just be wary and maybe ask around online or ask the vendor.

I love this style, I wear it to concerts and operas. However I cannot stand wearing rubber sole, I only wear leather. Rubber is pleb af.
Pretty hard finding decent jackets in this pattern outside thrift shops though.
I bought a very vintage one in a thrift shop in Germany and got it fitted, my favorite jacket.

I don't disagree on the leather sole preference but I think he's wearing Paraboot Michaels or Heschung Thuyas. They're designed to be worn under harsh conditions and a leather sole wouldn't make sense, it also wouldn't really fit the profile of the shoe. You need a chunky sole to balance the rest of it out.

Are black oxfords a meme at this point for someone who doesn’t wear suits a whole lot? I want some good shoes to wear with suits at funerals, weddings, and interviews but would also like to get office use out of them if possible. I think black oxfords would be too formal for shirt + trousers + odd jacket? So is there a good alternative? I have a question

Everyday office wear in winter, I just wear a shirt + chinos or cords (I want to buy flannels for next season) and throw a sweater on top, either a crew neck or a quarter zip. I hate v-necks.

But what happens in summer?
I hate going with just a shirt on, it looks cheap to not put anything else on it. But a sportcoat would be too formal and weird.

Just ditch the shirts and wear polo shirts?

It depends what shirts you're buying. Their Vintage Ivy line and Tokyo classic fits are exact fits for me. New York classic is made for guys that are 6' tall, so its a no way from me, so is anything slim fit. But I understand, their clothing off the rack seems tailored to a very specific body shape, and the only tailoring options they offer on their site are sleeve alterations, or made to measure if you manage to catch their trunk show. I've tried J.press and it felt too sloppy, I had one of their 3 button rolled blazers adjusted because of it. Comparatively, the only thing from Kamakura I've had tailored has been the hem on their 5 pocket pants and jeans, which on their site they sell at only ONE hem which is 32, meaning if you're taller than 5'10", you can't extend that shit and you just can't buy their pants. Its a brand made for stocky manlets(their pants are all roomy), and I'm unaware of any other brand that does this. If you find kamakura clothing uncomfortable, I'd bet money that you're taller than 5'9".

>New York classic is made for guys that are 6' tall
what does that mean? its cut long? doesnt seem like a problem as long as you tuck

>> No.18075938

>>18075933
There are many differences in fit. If you're taller you don't literally just have extra inches lengthening your torso, it affects the yoke of the shirt, sleeve length, placket length (their vintage Ivy and tokyo classic will not have a long enough buttons on the placket for tall guys to tuck), and the most important one of all is that as you're purchasing shirts by collar size and sleeve length, that only roughly takes into consideration the chest and waist width of the person. A taller person will have around the same collar size as a shorter person, but with entirely different chest and waist width on the shirt. This is how someone who is a manlet with a normal 15.5/16 collar, will feel like older brooks brothers or J press shirts are huge and sloppy, while a taller person will have a nice fit. As Kamakura is based in Japan, their main market is manlets and its manlet proportioned.
I hope this was informative.

You'd win that bet. I'm 6'3, but I have a long torso, 32 inch inseam actually works for me and gives me a quarter break. I've found that in order to balance my proportions everything needs to be high rise for trousers, jeans (plebshit now apparently?), even shorts.

I think said torso dimensions also fucks me with how their OCBDs are cut. I'm not fat, I'm 190lbs, but their looser fit feels constricting in the shoulder/armhole region.

Meanwhile J Press, O'Connells and Mercer fit like a dream.

We can't take everything shown in Take Ivy as a Bible that must be followed exactly 60 years later. Styles and tastes do change somewhat. White socks may have been great in the 60s, just like beating your wife and dumping hot loads in your secretary. It was a different, better time. About to buy a hopsack quarter lined custom 3 roll 2 (3/2) navy blazer with a center hook vent, semi-boxy fit, natural shoulders, 2 button sleeve, the works from Proper Cloth (sadly darts are present, although I don't mind too bad as I'm on the skinner side). This will be for all year round use, to wear with khakis in the summer and grey flannels in the winter. Can I get some advice regarding the most trad details here? I’m building a wardrobe and I really want to buy some navy clothing but I’m not sure what. I find the colour to look very corporate. I recently bought a charcoal twill suit because I thought and others thought it looked much better on me. I love navy suits on others and even navy blazers when I’ve tried some but they just don’t look particularly attractive on me. I feel like I’m going to end up building a wardrobe which is filled with grays. I thought navy was supposed to be a better color for pale skin and medium brown hair but apparently not? Is there anything else other than a navy blazer which looks particularly good in navy? For example, now that I have a charcoal twill suit I feel slightly reluctant to purchase a navy twill suit but I’m not sure what type of fabrics or items look extremely good in a navy or midnight color.

Seems quite difficult to find basics from big brands like Drake's on eBay though. I think my first two good ties will probably be a navy grenadine and a houndstooth wedding tie, I suppose that could be used for other formal events too. Same for vintage Lands End and Robert Talbott. Upscale stores like Barney's New York and Saks often have vintage private label ties that are great too, most people don't look for them and they're often inexpensive.

Solid white, solid light blue, blue and white University stripe, solid pink, red/burgundy university stripe, solid light gray and a solid pale green will give you the most mileage.

After that: blue and white awning stripe, blue and reverse stripe, green and white University stripe, purple and white University stripe, khaki university stripe, and cream/ecru are all good options but unless you have a large wardrobe you won't really "need" them.

I have a ton of OCBDs because they're the most versatile shirt I own. Wear them all year long, can wear with or without a tie with a sport coat, with jeans, linen trousers. with Baker pants, with shorts, etc. You can wear them with nearly anything except suits. Roll the sleeves and wear them with shorts in the summer, put a v-neck overtop to layer in the winter. They will also last forever. I have shirts from the late 70s/early 80s that I throw in the regular laundry and they're doing great, thank you eBay.

I can't praise them enough. Find what size fits you, set a limit of $30-$40 per shirt on eBay, load up and be set for years.

The thing is. Yes, these details are only consciously known to clothing autists like us, or people who grew up immersed in the style. But they can be picked up subconsciously by normies. They can tell when something about your outfit is off. Also, even if they dont, if you dont feel satisfied with what you're wearing, that can nag at your mind and decrease your confidence. At least it does with mine. I like to feel like everything i wear is in its proper place, not a compromise/substitution.

Thank you, this helped a lot. I posted in a previous thread that I was trying to decide between getting a navy or dark grey suit first since I rarely wear them. I tried both colours and I loved navy but since they are both cheap-ish twill suits, I feel that the charcoal looked a lot nicer and more interesting since there is some variation of white/grey up close, so I've kept that thanks to the responses. I can't get a perfect fit with RTW either thanks to being a gymcel so the dark grey seems to hide some of the undesirable fit of the trousers a little more. I'll look for a nicer, more heavily textured navy jacket instead because I really see what people mean now by navy looking very flattering. I'll also get some good MTM trousers since I'll get a lot of use out of those compared to a full suit and I am prepared to spend more. I think Collaro is supposed to be highly recommended?

There's a subset called "French Ivy" that incorporates way more black in general into fits than American/British styles. It's interesting, there's a certain flamboyance to the style, they incorporate different color/pattern combos and accessories than the Anglo version but it doesn't have the "I don't give a shit" Italian sprezzatura vibe that is a trap if most people try and pull it off.

I am dogshit at explaining it, check this link out and then search "French Ivy" on insta for ideas.

https://www.permanentstyle.com/2021/05/what-is-french-ivy.html

Quick example is this pic from Instagram. By default I'd pick a brown or oxblood shoe to wear if I put this on, they often go with black shoes instead.

Basically your black oxfords can be versatile and will most likely go well with what you're already wearing, you just don't realize it because you've been exposed to a certain style for too long.

>> No.18085193

>>18085084
You're welcome. It may seem counterintuitive but longwings aren't formal. They may feel formal now because mens clothing and style has moved towards a more casual feel, but if you're going by "classic rules" they aren't. Basically if a shoe has embellishments or broguing, it's not formal. The holes in the leather were originally to allow rain to pass through without soaking the shoe, so wingtips were originally seen as a rustic, country shoe. Sort of like how tweed was a working fabric and considered casual, but we think of it as more formal now.

I understand your view, I was pretty much the exact same way. Black=formal. And while I think that still holds true for black suits and tuxedos, there's plenty of room to work black in when it comes to regular fits. Once I understood the role texture plays in formality, it made more sense.

Tuxedo: Solid black color, uniform smooth fabric.Formal.
Black tweed sport coat: Uneven black color, textured rough fabric, a pattern, patch pockets on top of the coat disrupting the lines slightly. Not formal.
Black oxfords: Sleek, uniform black color. Formal.
Black longwings: Texture from the broguing, sometimes a chunkier, heavier heel. More rounded toe, less sleek, more weight to the shoe. Less formal.

Going to quote my post from the other thread on layering in warm weather

>If you're going to layer in the summer, at some point you have to accept you're going to be hot and possibly sweating and make your peace with it. The key is layering light weight pieces made of breathable fabric.

>Hopsack is good, anything with a fresco weave is good. Tropical weight wool is fantastic as well. Linen is good, lightweight linen and cotton blend oxfords are great. Poplin feels light but I swear I swear more wearing a light poplin shirt compared to a heavier oxford.

>You have to build from outside in.
Start with an undershirt that will wick sweat away and prevent it from pooling and causing sweat to bleed through at your armpits and back. Get a good quality undershirt, wool works really well for this.
Same principle for underwear.
Then go for a cotton, linen, Madras or seersucker shirt in a traditional/loose/relaxed/classic fit. You don't want slim, skinny or tight here. You want loose and as much space as possible between your skin and the shirt to promote air flow. Same with trousers. Fresco weave, linen, silk blend, hopsack, tropical weight wool, etc sized to give you a flowy, loose silhouette. Make sure there's plenty of room in the crotch, right anywhere is the enemy.

>For the sport coat, get something unlined and unstructured. Meaning you don't have the canvas lining, no padding either. You don't want it to be as loose as the shirt so it won't look sloppy, so pick a breathable fabric just like the trousers. Plain cotton can work just fine here. Silk and light wool blends are great for this as well. Don't wear a tie if you don't have to,unbutton a few buttons like guy in your pic and you'll be ok. I survived summers in Georgia and Alabama that way.

Tldr: Natural fabrics only, light layers, looser fit.
Also if you can pull it off, a bandana dipped in ice water and then wrung dry and wrapped around your neck is great to temporarily cool down.

As I pointed out on my previous post >>18072643 they are corrected grain. Now there’s nothing necessarily wrong with the fact, they just won’t develop patina, they won’t be as high guality and comfortable overall as something more expensive.

NTA. Say I am not in a position to get nicer shoes like Alden or C&J, and can only afford budget brands like Loake 1880 and a few other cheaper Spanish brands. Am I better off just buying a cheap corrected grain shoe for half the price of Loake until I can comfortably afford/convince myself to get C&J etc, which are twice the price of Loake, or should I still buy the Loake or equivalents?

I can't see myself in the future upgrading from Loake to C&J for X style of shoe when I already have it but I don't really know how my opinions will change.

You know, I used to love the idea of replacing my Weejuns with a pair of JM Weston 180’s but I’ve sort of grown to like the shittyness of the Weejuns. I don’t need to worry about them and there’s a certain utilitarianism to them and I’ve grown to appreciate that aspect in all of my clothes. Sure, I might buy a pair in the future but currently I’m happy with my shitty Weejuns which cost me 100€.

Would you still avoid the non-1880 lines? I believe they are all polished leathers.
>>18085815
Yes, I realise this with a lot of the clothing I end up spending more money than I previously would have on. Beautiful clothing or shoes are beautiful in appearance and I think sometimes it can be easy to fetishise an object because a lot of your other successful style icons wear it or recommend it, it's really nice being able to buy something for life or for a very long time and know that it is absolutely beautiful, the peak of what you can afford, and a joy to wear but at the end of the day they are just clothes. They are meant to be used and get worn. I'm not sure if this is a poorfag cope but I feel that I'll probably settle into the shittyness, certainly for high wear items like shoes. I just hope I don't regret not spending more.
