>MUH FINISHING!!!!!!!!!!!!
>MUH ZARATSU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You know why GS fucking sucks?
Their watches are ugly, bloated, thick and awkward. Your typical 3 hands GS is
>40mm in diameter
>48mm lug to lug
>12mm thick
>22mm between the lugs
The case are fully polished (which is dumb as fuck for sports watches) and the bracelet are probably the worst you can find in that price point. Not only do they look terrible, but fans of the brands are insufferable like that one faggot who keep spamming his shitter in litteraly every thread (even in vintage watch threads).

Is the finishing good? Sure, I guess.
But honestly I would rather wear a Daniel Wellington than being part of that "community".

Grand Seiko just screams "bad taste". And I say that as a weeb.

People didn't give a shit about vintage Cartier 2 years ago. You could buy a Tank Louis for 3k on Chrono24, and now they sell like hot cakes for 10k+.
Remember how Breitling and Tag were considered absolute dogshit just 2 years ago? A few good releases and now they're acceptable again.

Wait for the reliability issues of the B01 calibers to really kick in and Breitling will lose a bit of its luster.
also, vintage hype is generally astroturfed by sellers at least in part

Yes, just like in every market there are trend setters. People with enough taste and street credibility to be able to manipulate the market and even the brands's orientations (reissues of older models like pic related). Cartier and Piaget craze are also good examples of astroturfing.

In terms of difficulty to service? Any "grandma watch" with a small movement that's going to be in awful condition because there's hardly any waterproofing, if any.
You're gonna have hair wrapped around the crown stem (sometimes even around some wheel axles), dust and debris all over, humidity damage, possibly some cracks in the rubies too. It's tough getting anything decent out of them.
I'll take a janky complication module over a "I got this from my grandmother and it would mean a lot if it could work again" any day.
Pic wasn't too bad but you can see the kind of gradual damage that happens on these watches when you look at the bridges. They're supposed to be uniform in colour and texture and not look shitty and browned like that.

For me, it's the JLC price hikes that did it.
It's like they saw that everyone was coming to the conclusion that the basic Reverso was a good value proposition and a nice entry level into higher end watches, and their reaction was
>NOOOOOOOO we're a PRESTIGE ASPIRATIONAL HAUTE HORLOGERIE brand, we can't be put in the same sentence as "value proposition" aaaaaaaaaaaaa
>double-digit% price increase
And the worst part is, they can fuck up as hard as they want, with as many of their brands as they want because Cartier will always bail them out financially by pretty much owning the market for women's watches.
Panerai's constant movement downgrades? Moving IWC's movement production into ValFleurier? It's fine, we'll just sell more quartz tanks and we'll be okay.

Piaget does make movements, but not a ton of them, since they don't produce that much in the first place, and Cartier's mechanical output is small.
I don't know if Montblanc beats the rest in terms of quantity (doubt it does now that they don't have any of their monopushers in the current collections), it's more that of the Richemont brands, aside from JLC and the very high-end parts of Piaget and Cartier, they have the more complete in-house production line if you consider Minerva as part of Montblanc. The rest is mostly delocalized to ValFleurier yet still called "in-house". At least Montblanc owns its outsourced factory instead of pulling a Swatch/ETA.

No but the battery will, and in Seiko's case they do not make the proprietary battery/parts for watches that they discontinue. For instance, the early Spring Drive and Kinetics, good luck finding parts since they've been discontinued. I own two Kinetics(2008 and 2010) and there is zero parts availability due to Seiko discontinuing them. A 50-60 year old Rolex can be fixed either from RSC or a 3rd party jeweler. Why do you think everyone is jumping on the silicon hairspring bandwagon? It's not for its antimagnetic properties, that's been a solved problem for ages now. It's because that way only they can provide replacement and they can effectively kill off some models if they wish by discontinuing hairsprings.

Back then the standard was 40h of power reserve. Just wind your watch every morning if it's manual. Or just don't care about it if it's automatic.

>These 1960s watches are super easy to service
Wrong, mostly because of flimsy hairsprings, brittle springs in the function-setting area dial-side in some cases and because many were not taken good care of, leading to problems down the line. Also, the systems in place for central seconds were often fragile and good luck finding any replacement for a throughaxle now. If any part other than a screw is damaged, you are fucked big time.
>Even today they teach young watchmakers/horologists how to service a watch using 1960s Rolexes/Omegas
ABSOLUTELY wrong. When you start, you lose and break parts all the time so the very last thing you want are movements with limited part supplies. Most training starts on ETA 6498/6497 then moves on to ETA 2824 or Sellita equivalent. No one in their right mind would make you start on obsolete movements when you could use today's industry standards. The only case in which that would make sense would be a school that only ever got old supplies in NOS condition or close, which is very rarely the case as most schools work alongside the industry groups (who in turn get to recruit directly from there)

>Almost impossible to service for independent watchmakers. They're packed with proprietary bullshit and weird designs.
Yes, but not for any reason related to the movements. The majority of modern watches use either ETA or some clones, quartz or mechanical, or basic japanese movements. And you can easily get parts for ETA, all you need is a repair accreditation for Tissot or Longines and you can access most of what you need. Even without that, a lot of third-party suppliers have spare parts in store. And even the very protective brands (see Rolex) are often so high in demand that third-party replacement parts for movements now exist and they are often on-par with the original (but that's because Rolex movements are really nothing special). Not saying it's never a problem but if you're not ham-fisting it, you can easily get through a service on any modern watch without needing to switch components (except with Dubois-Dépraz modules, these are the actual worst)
The problem with parts lockdowns is with hands, casing elements, crowns, pushers and the like. THESE are the parts you cannot get anywhere. And since they are visible, you can't just wing it and use third-party generic replacements the way you would with say a mainspring. Some brands are notorious for fucky parts too, Breitling's extra brittle chrono hands are a good example. They're meant to snap in order to dissuade any indie or third party watchmaker from trying anything and centralizing all services and repairs in Breitling's own repair centers.

Haven't really worked on any modern JLC so far because lol no accreditation. Done some quick mends here and there and I'm generally not too impressed. They really rest on the reputation of their really high end stuff to make everyone assume you get the same quality in their basic offerings. You see some of it on specs alone with the 899 having unidirectional winding because "muh slim profile" when thin bidirectional winding is a completely solved issue at this point and not even locked behind pattents. Same with the calibers you see in the entry-level Reversos that still have pretty weak power reserves when the Blancpain 100h slim movements were developped in the 90s.
idk maybe once I get to propermy deal with the movements, I'll see something I can't yet but so far it's not that great once you get past the slim factor in a lot of their movements.
Vintage JLC calibers range from really cookie-cutter to wonky as heck with bumper-autos and whatnot.

For you or me who are both under the age of 45 and physically active? Not really.
For people who get less and less active, or go from car commute to desk job every day? Yes it does. Every time I get old clients who spend their lives in the comfy chair coming in telling me "my watch just keeps stopping waaah", it's ALWAYS fine and it's ALWAYS one of the smaller ETAs with unidirectional winding (2000 IIRC or some other number, I don't remember but I see exactly the barrel bridge architecture with its shitty under-the-bridge transmission)
I've heard it causes accelerated wear and tear in some cases too as you can have your weight spinning freely, that it can eat through ball-bearings, but I haven't seen it happen.

In my (maybe shitbrained and retarded) opinion, it doesn't make any sense to make or wear a watch case 40mm or greater unless there is a good functional reason to do so. If a dive watch is 40mm+ because it makes it more readable under water and it makes the bezel easier to use and it helps bulk it up for more protection and water resistance and it's designed to go over your wetsuit, alright. If a chronograph needs to be 40mm to make room for all the subdials and complications and put more clear information on there, alright. But if a watch is just a 3 hander and maybe a date or moonphase or another single simple complication, why does it need to be 40mm? Unless you have big andre the giant wrists and a 36mm datejust looks like a little girl watch on you it just doesn't make sense.

Never heard of that theory. Wristwatches were smaller as a statement of the watchmaker's skill... and as people wanted to differentiate their new toys from traditional pocket watches.
Both reasons play no role nowadays and tend to wear watches as a statement so they got bigger to have more wrist presence.

Easy parts access and modability for some. Parts sure are a reason why I have mine after dealing with the BS of big brands who don't trust you to change hands on one of their precious entry-level shitters whereas Vostok gladly passes off the burden of repair and service to whomever buys an escape wheel off Meranom.
And they can be accurate if you regulate them yourself, which isn't that hard. It's just that the factory QC is minimal and their accuracy tolerances are a joke. They're not that much worse than what you had on mechanical Tissots while being a fraction of the price, but still.
They're inexpensive, they look funny and some of them even look okay, you can do whatever with them without being scared of damaging anything (and if you do, just get a spare).
If you just want an automatic at a low price and don't want to deal with the chinaman's shit, then they sure are a better option than a Sistem 51 based watch. If you want anything more though, then you're better off saving up until you can at least get in the Orient or auto-PRX range.

Just got into the hobby recently. What should I buy if I want to replace straps/remove links at home?

Generally the only tools you need are a little screwdriver for bracelet screws, kinda like an eyeglass screwdriver, and a tool with a spring bar tool on one side and a little pin pusher on the other side. If you're just changing straps and adjusting bracelets that will probably get you though 99% of jobs. Sometimes if you have a really stubborn push pin bracelet you may need one of those screw down pin pushers or a block and hammer and punch to hammer pins out, but most of the time you can get by with really simple tools. I'm also always careful in trying to use quick release spring bars and straps with built in quick release spring bars so I have to fuck with that shit as little as possible.

The brushed steel case is pretty good, actually. The only issue is it's an unusual shape so it's hard to find fitted bracelets and straps that fit well.

You can easily find them at 800-900€ second hand or grey market.
Don't shell out the 1400€ they cost brand new.
Also, if you can see them in person, do so. Photos don't show the effect the glass has, or the texture of the dial and paint, especially on the black versions.
The Regulator ones are tempting. Most regulators are classical and a bit same-y in design (or are meme-tier Louis Erard collabs) so the Max Bill Regulator stands out with its clean look.

The one we went over. Simple, white, no date (window). I've had my eyes on it for a while now. I like the straightforwardness of it. It's why I think the date ones kinda miss the point. Less is more in this case. It's quite literally the point.
Actually, I feel like that's the case with a lot of watches. So many beautiful dials ruined by a date complication/window thrown in there just because.

Would have probably gone for a nomos, but those fucking lugs, man. They kinda feel like old man watches for me.

Nicolas Hayek wants to know your location
I will never not be salty over the awful date windows Swatch has forced on the Fifty Fathoms because "hurrr all our watches must have date windows (except the Speedmaster)"

Look, I agree with you guys in a lot of cases. But it is what it is, the general public pretty much always wants a date window. I don't get it either, but you gotta get the normalfag business.

See, that's the thing :
The normies will not buy a Fifty Fathoms.
I get it for Tissot, I get it for Longines. These are the brands that move a lot of volume for Swatch.
But the really annoying part is the double standard of Omega getting to keep their designs as they want because they're the cash-cow for enthusiasts while the FF is required to have that ugly 4:30 window.
I wouldn't be so mad about it if it didn't cause a pricing rift between the no date FFs and date FFs in the secondary market. As if it wasn't already expensive enough.
Guess I'll get a 2100/Leman instead. Oh well.
