Thrift. You're not going to be able to replicate the more niche or complex silhouettes 1:1, but look for things like high rise pleated trousers, silk or rayon shirts, and wool overcoats. Check out David Thewlis's character in Naked for inspo

Yohji since 2020 has been pretty killer. Ever since he sold the company in 07 or so I felt the work go downhill. My favorite shows are still late 90s, but the what we’re seeing now will likely be “archive” in the future.

How much are you working with?

You can lowball on depop, etsy, grailed, etc for pretty good deals. I’ve seen yohji coats go for under 200, same for pants and shirts. And look for diffusion labels as well, such as ground y, y’s for men, AAR. Defunct lines sell for less generally.

For vintage, ask/look for pre-1960s suiting. You can find lots of boxy / wide silhouette slacks and blazers, as they aren’t too in demand.

if someone lists an item on ebay with a low start bid you can often get good deals because even though a buy it now listing might get a high price, on an auction you have to rely on everyone interested viewing and bidding within that single week
i got a really nice, thin wool CDG coat from 1998 for £120 ish this way. on YJP even the same coat would probably be 50k yen
