eBay's prices are a little higher but they come with an authenticity guarantee if you're buying something worth more than 2k.

Genuine question, how does a brand of today that is not Rolex, Tudor, Breguet, Patek, Longines, Breitling, Cartier, etc., come to produce high end pieces and make you spend 15k on a watch? Is it hopeless and there's no way to achieve it just because the aforementioned brands all have more than a hundred years of history and prestige? Moser and Lange both burst onto the scene and have experienced massive success in the high end market. Lange had extremely savvy executives and Richemont backing but Moser is totally independent. Laurent Ferrier, FP Journe Rexhep Rexhepi, Gronefeld, de Bethune, and Greubel Forsey are also all new-ish independents who not only compete but often mog the brands you listed. Sure the name recognition of all these brands is a lot lower than say Rolex or Cartier but anyone who actually has a serious knowledge of watchmaking will acknowledge that those big brands (and some might include Patek in this) cannot compete with the agility and pure undistilled autism on display by many very high-end independents.

>> No.18003875

>>18003866
Regard and prestige is a matter of marketing, not of the quality of the product

Rolex is the dominant force they are because they nailed their marketing in the 20th century and that's why they were able to build their brand

However that can come at the cost of quality because it necessitates that you increase production to match increased demand, which is also risky because when you increase production you have no way of knowing if and how long for that increased demand will last

Some companies (like nomos) may not have the extra cash to spend on heavily marketing their product or they don't see it as a good use of resources since it would require them to rapidly increase production in order to match increased demand which may or may not ever come

Basically it's a careful balancing act that requires you to be very careful with how you handle your brand, which is why rolex is so special in how they've been able to capture so much of the market

It's not that I disagree or that I'm unaware of other newish brands that can ask you a shitton of money for a watch, it's just that I keep seeing collectors ultimately come down to a small handful of watches that are always Rolex, Patek, Breguet and a few others, as if nothing else was equally worth it. Might be that people are just brainwashed by marketing, sure, but this is what we see in the world of collectors.

This video explains it pretty well

The market for expensive watches is already small, and the market for expensive watches from smaller brands with weird designs and lots of complications even smaller

Niche, smaller but still expensive brands tend to focus on appealing to the extra small part of the market that would actually look to them in order to buy a watch, while the larger brands like AP, Rolex, Patek, etc provide things that they know will be more appealing to more people

2 options:
1. those collectors cannot afford greubel forsey/rexhepi etc. (a rexhepi sold last year for just under $1 million at auction, greubel forsey entry model is $200k)
2. those collectors are more worried about their watch being recognized and as status symbols as opposed to watchmaking (very often the case with Rolex and Patek sports watches)

Are you literally just winding it a turn or 2? I don't know exactly how much you have to wind your watch to get a full wind but I'd think it would take somewhere between 30-40 turns or so. But if you're going to be wearing an automatic watch all day, and especially if you're going to be wearing it every day, you really shouldn't have to manual wind it if you're reasonably active at work or something. Just wear it for a few minutes in the morning for an initial wind, then set it when you get a minute to do so, then just wear it the rest of the day.

Love this boring plain cope watch. Probably the best wearing watch I have, and as much as I love my old Sub this has just gotten so much more wear time. It's been an absolute workhorse, cops abuse like there's no tomorrow, gets bashed around when I'm on the tools and so far it's been faultless while keeping almost perfect time. Can't complain really, only mild inconvenience is the thickness. Wish I bit the bullet on the ETA powered 2 liner originally but still more than happy.

In saying that I've got a wedding coming u and I'm severely lacking in the non-sports/divers category, what's your opinion on Longines? Popped into the local store over the weekend and had a good look at one of their 42mm Master Collections and it seemed pretty nice.

Buttons and case are still like a brand new. Steel frame do have tiny, almost invisible, scratches. Polyurethane strap looks somewhat worn - at the edges it's shiny.

It's smartwatch, but I only use vibe alarm, sunrise & sunset. Moon phase and step chart only for fun.

>> No.18005477

>>18005471
Not exactly. Titanium is softer than stainless steele, at least on the Rockwell scale iirc.
But what they usually do, is the use hardened titanium that is/shuld be harder and more scratch resistant. The good thing about Titanium, is that it has self healing properties. That's why even some ceramic cotaings are starting to include tio2 nanoparticles exactly for these properties. People prefer them even to graphene sealings.
Titanium is alos harder to work with and more exotic, and it is also, like you mentioned, much lighter. Some people don't like that because it gives the impression of non-heft and people associate this with not expensive.

Stop repeating this nonsense. It's an oversimplification. It only concerns oxidization rates. Your scratched-up titanium watch will always look like shit once it's scratched up. It won't magically restore itself to like-new condition.

I've been hunting a compact, white dial sports watch for a while now and have settled on two options:
>Massively overpay for pic related Casio from a reseller
>Get pic related Longines VHP but be annoyed that it only has 50m WR
Any other suggestions for a 36mm white dial GADA watch under, say 1k? I'd rather quartz at that price point.

Interesting. Personally I've always preferred lighter watches because I like the feeling of not having a burden on my wrist. With heavy watches, sometimes I find myself with the sore wrist syndrome at the end of the day. It's also worth remembering that, for at least 50 years, back in the 1920s-1970s, the light weight was unanimously considered one the topmost features of a watch. It really took mindless coomsoomerism to brainwash people so that they prefer sore wrists in exchange for the pure illusion to be rich and self-realized.

https://theoandharris.com/watch-101-which-metal-for-an-everyday-watch-titanium-or-steel/
>However, when you scratch titanium, it’s basically stuck that way, since the titanium cases have proven to be significantly harder to polish/refinish.
Looks like it's indeed not about scratches.

I don't know, actually. Light weight is great, but the matte look of titanium is not something I'm a huge fan of.

You'd think but this model is discontinued and the price has gotten jacked up as a result. Are they really that different? titanium weigth is great, but if you want titanium you should go for premium offerings with hardening and polishing, iirc citizen make quite a few of them
if you go cheap, you'll always get the dull matte titanium, at that point it will look like shit but at least you still get the lightness and it's hypoallergic too
posted this fucko recently, it looks shinier in the photo than IRL and also has nasty scratches in one localized place on the bezel, but I got it that way, no idea how someone managed that, probably slid on concrete or something
