How is everyone doin?
I thought it might be fun to talk a bit about what everyone is doing work related. I don't mean to dox someone, so you can keep it as vague as you like.

I'll start. I have a master degree in a science related field and I do in fact work in said field. I do not do HR Management, my boss is doing this. Although I have to help with any questions my colleagues with a lesser degree have. I would say my work involves like 70 % desk work, checking results, speaking to clients etc. The rest is spent doing stuff that push certain fields further at work.

Hope you are all doing well and I'm excited to read what all my fellow /wt/ frens are doing.

Gotta go with the times and keep the price of the discontinued ones up. Seiko is desperately trying to elevate their brand on the success of GS, but they are not improving their product accordingly. I've said it before and i'll say it again, all they have to do is stop using hardlex, up their bracelet game and get the accuracy on ALL their movements sorted. They would be killing it if they did only those three things.

>> No.17994420

>>17994415
I agree. Right now they get fucked by the Powermatic 80 which drops from the conveyer and produces +2 seconds a day. Also GS is overshadowed in most western countries by the sheer amount of quasi luxury brands that offer around the same quality while actually having a non mall shitter name.

>> No.17994441

>>17994415
Their bracelets and their hangups with sapphire are the most baffling things about the brand. You look around the industry and see all the companies with decent bracelets are for the most part doing the same things - they make two or maybe three styles of bracelet that they use across all of their models so that they can just produce a couple high quality things that are interchangeable across a bunch of different lines of watches. What does seiko do? Produce a shitload of different watches with wildly different lug dimensions so every individual watch has to have its own shitty cheap bracelet. Simply committing to 2 or 3 decent varieties of bracelet they put on every watch would both produce better watches and and almost surely save them millions of dollars. It's stupid to tool up to make a hundred different shitty bracelets when you could just tool for a handful of good ones.

Sapphire is just baffling. Just spend the extra couple dollars per unit on sapphire.

>> No.17994446

>>17994415
I disagree.

Seiko has made a number of mistakes.
They cranked up the price of Grand Seiko too quickly. GS was better when it was "95% of Swiss quality at 60% of the price", but when they are priced equally to the Rolexes and Omegas, they fall short.

If Seiko all of a sudden started making regular Seikos good (sapphire crystals, bezels that lined up, movements accurate to within 10 seconds per day, non-crap bracelets.) the effect would actually work to undercut Grand Seiko.
Why, then, would you buy a Grand Seiko when you could get a regular Seiko which is 90% as good? So GS would have to raise its prices even further to differentiate itself from Seiko, but then they'd be even more expensive than the Swiss brands.

My guess is they simply don't think it will help them sell more watches. Watches in the price range are more of an enthusiast market and they seems to be selling well enough. Sucks for us who remember Seiko as a brand that gave you a ton a value for the money instead of the opposite.

That's interesting and baffling then. Id be down for Seiko with a 6L movement and sapphire 1-1.5k instead of 2-3k. Maybe they should ditch the weird mid market prospex and presages instead of nerfing there entry level watches. Then there will be even more distinction between Seiko and grand Seiko. A SPB143 is $1500 cad ffs

>is it a lot worse than the new one?
Not really. The old bracelet was really well-made for the time. I like the look of the old one better with the wider centerlinks.
The old one had pins and collars instead of screws and pins for resizing, which is a pain in the ass, but you only have to resize a bracelet once.
The old clasp is more comfortable because it's shorter and thinner, but the microadjust requires a toothpick. It's not on-the-fly.
The male endlinks of the old one also make the watch wear larger, but that's only a problem for wristlets.

The basic Master Control Date costs 9,550.-
The basic Reverso Classic Monoface costs 10,300.-

Obviously, this does not take into account the discounts the ADs will offer you, which will probably be about 15-20% but that's still pretty expensive.
The MC has a simpler case whereas the Reverso has a much more complicated case. The MC's movement is automatic but is simpler and is also used in more watches so they can save money there, while the Reverso's hand-winding movement is shaped to fit the case, so there's less economies of scale.

Both feel more expensive than they should be because JLCs were so underpriced for so long, but whining about price hikes is a waste of time.

It seems like once a microbrand establishes itself as not just some fly-by-night mushroom operation, there's a clear move to go upmarket.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean, do you mean actually old vintage watches or are you saying vintage watches to mean mechanical or automatic watches in general?

If you mean actual vintage watches it's because they are generally harder and more expensive to maintain and get parts for and even if they are well taken care of they'll still ultimately need more maintenance and will neber be as accurate as new manufactured watches. You could also end up getting hornswaggled and paying a lot of money for a lemon or overpaying for a watch that turns out to not be what you thought it was. That intimidates some people, maybe most people. But if you understand what you're buying and what you're getting into there's nothing wrong with it.

If you're asking why do people prefer quartz and smart watches over mechanical watches, it's much of the same reason plus they give you better timekeeping and features for much cheaper. Someone that doesn't understand what you see in mechanical watches will probably never understand it if they can't get past accuracy or needing to wind and set it all the time and whatever. It just takes a certain kind of person to appreciate and wear them these days.

Links should be thin with free movement but no rattle or play (definitely no binding). They should be shaped and sized so that they drape comfortably around the wrist. No sharp edges.
Sizing should be done via screws (or other methods like Cartier's tool-free version) but never pins and collars.
The bracelet should have a comfortable taper down to the clasp.
The clasp should be thin and well-proportioned to the bracelet (not overly long and bulky. The clasp should offer tool-free microadjust, along with at least one half-link in the bracelet itself, to get a perfect fit.
The finishing should be the equal to the degree of case finishing.

It's an annual calendar. It knows which months have 30 or 31 days but doesn't know how many days February has, so you have to manually intervene once per year.

hey guys, I''ve got a friend who likes well made automatic watches with a slant towards divers. his current best watch is a lovely oris about 3K USD, which he chose because of the in-house movement.

His current collection lacks something silly and fun, and I would like to buy that for him. I'm thinking a skeleton with a nice movement but beyond that I'm not entirely sure where to go. I'd like something a little garish because he lacks that, but the classier and more well made it is the more likely he'll accept it. Any recommendations?

It depends on if you're thinking about the watch as a permanent acquisition or something you intend to eventually sell.
Selling a watch without B&P, especially if it's a commonly faked watch, is much harder than selling a complete set, and it typically commands a lower price. Some people simply will not buy a watch without them.

Plenty of places will say "the power reserve is a little shorter than what is expected" or "there should be better movement finishing at this price point". Those are the unflattering parts. An educated customer knows those are pretty harsh things to say.

Do you want a magazine that's really acerbic and just flat out says "this watch is dogshit"? That's just not going to happen. The manufacturers will simply refuse to include them in any press events or releases and not submit watches for review.

>>Do you want a magazine that's really acerbic and just flat out says "this watch is dogshit"?
Yes.
>The manufacturers will simply refuse to include them in any press events or releases and not submit watches for review.
Ok and? It's not like you can't shit on watches that you see on the internet and in dealerships, you don't have to rely on manufacturers anymore.

While we find it funny, most people find that kind of mean-spiritedness a real turn-off. Even for many of us, it gets tiresome after a while.

Plus, running a magazine without any industry access is pretty difficult. You're always the last to know about any news since you'll have to find out from reading your competitors. People will order you to stop using their pictures. You won't make as much money advertising. Basically you'll just be running a blog.

I'm hesitant to put my stuff near that level of course, but the overall style of buildup, layering, and transitions is what I'm putting out.

That particular track was THE house anthem in like 2008 or something.

I guess I'd have to learn to actually DJ if I want to actually play to a crowd.

Locally in my little european country. Learning to DJ isn't that hard, once you learn how to beatmatch and mix it's easy. It helps to practice, a lot, so that you know the songs you're playing inside and out, which one goes together and which one doesn't, then it's all about the flow and not being too wasted. Just get a console and start banging.

This was my crew's setup before we switched to tractor and after that everybody started playing on the Pioneer CDJs so it was much easier and cheaper to do.

Yes handing over your expensive item for months to a bunch of faggots for them to "fix", where they won't even give you an ETA is a real big brain move.

Biggest crowd? Hmmm, probably the official Roger Sanchez afterparty, i was late and pretty drunk but i blew the place up, the club wasn't that big, idk around 500 people maybe? We mostly did our own gigs in my city though, i prefer a semi-private atmosphere of around 50-100 people where you can relax and just feel good, it also helps knowing your friend's musical tastes so you can drop someone's favorite song and make their day.
