It has a slight resemblance, but Asad has SO MUCH VANILLA that it doesn't qualify as an Elixir clone. Elixir does not have vanilla, at all. Asad starts off somewhat similar to the beginning of the drydown of Elixir, then strays into vanilla gourmand territory. For me, it's like 50% Elixir and 50% generic vanilla amber oriental. I prefer Elixir.

by the metric of them not being close in scent profile to whats considered on trend in the past 30-40 years?
Chypre has evolved a lot, and most people don't even know that some of the modern masterpieces such as b540 or ganymede would be categorized as chypre.
As for the horrible wine analogy, let me counter it with whiskey analogy, for most of it's lifespan people used to drink whiskey unmatured, later it was matured in repurposed winecasks, and at some point aging in bourbon casks became the trend.
The product is still whiskey, however overtime due to different trends, laws, and circumstances it has changed.

Guys, let’s be real here. Every fragrance made by Quentin is unimaginative, played out and smells awful. I don’t get why people dick ride him so hard, especially since 99% of his olfactory creations have no rhyme or reason to them. They smell like A blind and deaf person with down syndrome had to describe the smell of a fragrance. People who like him only do so because they can’t stand to smell nice. I’m talking about the type of person that sprays on cat piss only to smell different, the type of person that can’t stand anything that actually smells good because they find it “mass appealing”. This, unfortunately seems to be a growing trend among the fragrance community, everyone always tries to one-up Another by wearing something incredibly bad smelling. The biggest irony is that those people most religiously hate on fragrances that have been made out to be bad like Dior Sauvage or Creed aventus. Sure, both of these fragrances cost more than they should, especially the latter, but at least they smell good. And that’s some thing that can’t be said about 99% of those garbage cash grabs like those Quentin and those other charlatans makes.

It was wild, one of the other customers was asking about the smell of oud, and we chatted a little bit about its scent and how she had guests from the Middle East in who brought some oud for her, and she just casually walks over to one of the display shelves and picks up these little driftwood looking chunks of wood and hands them to us, and tells us they’re oud.

On the one hand I can’t believe they’re real, but on the other, it’s a legit tiny niche shop that has frags from around the world, so she could 100% be telling the truth.

I've got an invite to a special Catholic Golden Wedding celebration. Rich people. It's in a chilly cathedral in Germany during the daytime, followed by a nice hotel lunch. I'd go with picrel, but it's almost non detectable in the cold weather. Please, share fragrance recommendations for this occasion.
I'm thinking Pour Monsieur or Tam Dao, but I need some perspective since I've never been in a wedding like this.

Alright Frag, I want some opinions.

I’m planning to get a single frag by Tauer, my collection is big enough already and I really don’t want/need any more than I have, but I do want -one- of his.

I’ve narrowed it down to LADDM and ACDD. They both have excellent performance, great scents, and they’re both relatively similar, Tauer even describing ACDD as the evolution of LADDM.
To me LADDM is a little lighter/spicier while ACDD is darker/more leathery.
I’m currently leaning LADDM because of the rest of my collection, and slightly because it’s (arguably) his biggest name frag.
What’s your opinion?

I'm thinking of buying the Tom Ford Ombre Leather, which would be my first fragrance.
Is it suitable even for younger/college aged men? When I tried it on in the store, I really liked the smell, but my mother basically told me I smelled like an old man (the fragrance was apparently too mature for me).
Is that something to be concerned about?
Also, I heard it's a winter fragrance, but how does it fare in the spring and summer?

Anyhow, if I remember correctly, the frag did have a little bit of an older thing going. Maybe you could pull it off, depends on your general style, I'd maybe put it off for a a bit. TF is also expensive for what it is & if you're buying your first frag your tastes might change - I know mine did. Maybe get a decant or a sample. Good you're thinking about this.
In my opinion it's more crucially the aromatic-woody frags that really don't fit a man under 30 today. "But classic gentleman" is code for neckbeard there.

Anyone else sign up for this? Anyone get selected? Would you blind buy?

Manuel Cross Chypre Noir For American Perfumer 1/75 limited edition signed bottles image courtesy of American Perfumer©

Indeed, Manuel Cross Chypre Noir For American Perfumer possesses a beautiful bone structure, and a lineage which is readily traceable to the greats of yore: vintage Cabochard de Gres, created by Bernard Chant in 1959 (musks, leather, oakmoss), and Germaine Cellier’s vintage Balmain Jolie Madame, 1953 (artemisia, tuberose, musk, oakmoss, leather). Both fragrances are growlingly animalic – but they utilize civet and/or castoreum in the process, whereas Manuel has chosen costus root – a potent vegetal musk which smells divinely of the unwashed scalp of the beloved. Once you become acquainted with costus, you will always remember it; it imparts an additional leatheriness that we associate with other musks, and it can help anchor a scent – so it performs double duty in Chypre Noir. Indolic, enchanting tuberose maintains its lustre here, never fading into the background (in the afore-mentioned leather chypres, one finds jasmine, ylang-ylang, and gardenia instead). Bitter herbs enhance its sophistication without the use of galbanum; while not listed, artemisia comes to mind immediately. Musk ketone is sweetly fatty and persistent, contributing a rondeur which is so appealingly reminiscent of great chypres; it feels as if the perfumer has not stinted on the oakmoss, either – always such a delight: earthy, shadowy, and rich.

Notes: herbs, tuberose, musk ketone, costus, oakmoss, leather

Also... Is JPG Elixir actually that good? Is it worth getting if I have a variety of sweetish winter frags already? I can't believe it has a 4.6 on fragrantica. Is it super over hyped or legit? Macy's is 30 minutes from me so I haven't had a chance to go try it

bleu electrique flanker has very similiar DNA and has adequate performance. ( it still around 8 hours, and most of it as a skin scent)

Its SWEET.

I really don't get the hype for it. It's just le male but mixed with some generic stronger with you style caramely sweetblob.
The OG Le Male is way better. Get Sauvage Elixir or something if you want a nuclear modern clubber, it has more going for it.

Unfortunately there's no where to buy it except eBay and I had a bad experience buying a discontinued frag there(obviously refilled bottle with dollar tree crap)

Is OG Le Male really much more than a barbershop with added vanilla/tonka?

it also has way more cinnamon and amber than usual for barbershops
and cardamom, cumin, mint... a pretty clever fragrance overall and the "sweetened up barbershop turned clubber" idea turned out to be a great success
OG Le Male was something new when it came out, the Elixir is more of the same bland sweet caramel extravaganza we've been bombarded with over the last decade
