Does the board still like military surplus clothing? I recently purchased this cold war era Danish army parka. I think it looks kinda cool and post-apocalyptic. Probably going to wear it with some black wranglers, ariats, and a henley.

Surplus is nice and cheap and well fitting :)
Got these pants for 8 bucks at a goodwill the other day, and a Korean war trenchcoat a week before.
The hardest part about buying them though is that I personally don't want to larp too hard and so I usually only wear surplus for like camping or cold weather like we've been having.

How does fabric that old hold up? I had to have some NOS mil surplus boots resoled after a month, the leather and sole were fine, but the PU foam midsole thing decomposed from stored humidity, apparently a common issue with that style of boot. The goretex on it is also iffy.

It was based when I was a boy scout and could buy cheap as shit clothes and gear for camping. As an adult I did find a brand new 100% wool U.S. Navy standard issue pea coat but otherwise haven’t looked for much surplus gear.

The one in the closet was bought off Far East Tactical facebook group as well as ebay, I also got a Type 07 PLAN Marine uniform off of aliexpress.

Aliexpress is weird because the factories that make shit sold there are often the same factories that make the actual chinese uniforms, so as long as the uniform matches it's basically the same as actual issued stuff. However, there are cheaper, less authentic chinese uniforms on there too so you need to know how to distinguish them.
Similar situation with ebay, but there is legit stuff on there
Royaltigergear also sells authentic Chinese surp, but shipping is kinda expensive

get the parka or field shirt instead, and wear it with a black or dark brown/plum tshirt and jeans, white/light grey sneakers, and perhaps a beanie that's two shades darker than the yellow in the camo. you can also layer a field shirt underneath an OD green jacket so you get just a hint of the camo pattern between the jacket and your shirt

if you want to do the pants, try a tan work jacket or carhartt, brown boots and a warm toned white sweater.

there will be certain people who might think you're a larper or cringe irl but those people will never ever talk to you because they suck and are retarded. as long as you own it, no one will care. just coordinate with the colors in the camo.

easy as.

I have both (among other iterations of US Army jackets, like the m-51). There's something really badass and well designed with an OG m-65 but the Austrian Goretex one is, overall, a better jacket. I find it more breathable, tailored, and the membrane is a nice touch. The non GTX Austrian m65 type jacket isn't as great. The fabric has a bit of a sheen to it, nor does it fit as well. If I had to have one surp jacket it'd probably be the Austrian GTX one. The US m65 being a close second.

If its small, Varusteleka has the m77 in 5.5 and 6.5.

Surplus is really getting ridiculous. Like the other dude said, sifting through ebay is probably your best bet. Good luck with that. The red/white/black/gray color pallet version of m81 woodland camo is not used by any military and was just created by companies like rothco to make overpriced low quality novelty replicas. That's said, the pattern looks pretty cool so every once in a while you will see it filter into mainstream fashion brands when designers are feeling especially spicy.
If you want some quality real surplus gear that prominently features the color red, check out the old Swiss "alpenflage" TAZ-83 stuff. It's very well made, features some fairly unique design elements you won't see anywhere else, and looks really cool.

The sizing on these is so weird. I have it exactly too my measurements and it just feels poorly fitting. Not to mention the zipper is cheap looking. I should wear mine more and preserve my OG Vietnam era Alpha Industries m65 but damn the m75 is just no match.
>>17997710
I only wear camo pants while doing yard work or hiking. Despite having dozens of camo patterns I agree that they are hard to pull off.
>>17997913
That's cool. Where'd you get them from? Boot sizing is ass. I have a lot of boots and generally buy them big so I can put a nice thick insole in them. For some boots I have a felt insole on top of a regular insole because the sizing is that messed up. I'd also highly recommend a liner sock and Darn Tough brand socks as they never seem to get chewed up.

I lucked out and found this at an antique store. It's an experimental camo from Czechoslovakia made in like 1990-1991 only. The US asked them to help out in Desert Storm and they didn't have any desert camo so they made this and sent like 200 dudes to Kuwait. Then they broke up in 1992. Got it for $50.

I actually own this one. The fact that it doesn't have shoulder tabs gives you a LOT more leeway for styling it than most other milsurp field jackets would, since it comes off as less recognizably military. If you want to get a jacket of this sort of model second hand, there isn't a better choice to get imo. So long as you make sure to style it appropriately and wear it to the right occasions it wouldn't come off as too larpy.

>> No.18002687

>>18002564
My go-to outfit for the swedish field jacket is a turtleneck and pleated trousers: I've noticed that turtlenecks fit the jacket especially well. A sweater worn over a button-up also looks good under it. A shirt & tie combo can work depending on the materials, but there is a risk of the shirt contrasting a bit too much with the rough/thick material of the jacket, so ymmv there. In general, you'll want to look for items which fit the old-fashioned look without leaning into a military style. Definitely take a look into british country clothing, as wool field jackets show up quite a bit in there. As far as accesories go, it looks good with a leather bag and gloves, as well as darker-colored (wool) scarves.

Lastly, you might want to make consider not wearing it with trousers of a matching grey color, to eliminate chances of the outfit looking like a uniform.

Do not buy from "meme" websites like Kommandostore, Americana Pipedream, etc. They are jacking up the prices based on the fact that you are a clueless goober that doesn't know the market rates and want something trendy. Go to hunting websites or obscure surplus sites that still have PayPal logos from 15 years ago that are completely out of touch with trends and the market and are still selling shit for what it was worth ten years ago.

Do not buy garments that are merely sized "small/medium/large". You will get an oversized jacket that doesn't fit how it should. Instead look up the specific army sizing for your height and chest.

Unless something is rare as fuck, don't buy grade 2 from an untrusted seller, you'll get a faded, stitched together piece of shit with no waist cord or hem cord.

Use PayPal, use ebay. Surplus sellers don't check their shit, they mislabel all the time, you don't want the hassle of dealing with a 70 year old boomer over 20 emails trying to negotiate a refund.

Do not buy army overcoats, they are not made to look fashionable and you will look stupid in them.

I've got to give it to KS and AP - they usually at least have the full size range given. They are overpriced but unlike fuds I can complain and get my money back or an exchange sent pretty fast. As someone who grew up buying surplus in a store I've dealt with a lot of fuds, and the online versions are like you said, terrible. Idiots like Mike from Mike's Militaria are even worse than the zoomers.

That said, surplus is a dying game. KS and Varusteleka have less and less surplus by the day. Hell, even stuff they say is surplus isn't, like the Swedish m90 stuff. All the good stuff is mostly dried up. Even a recent order I made with MilitaryMart was a dud because half of the items they claimed were British surplus were just commerical junk.

>> No.18020885 [DELETED]

>>18020418
Not really the best take. Most of the surplus shops that aren't KS/AP tier have more shitty repro crap than actual good milsurp. EBay is hit or miss, the only thing I've really ever found on there easily has been stuff like m65s and other US surplus, and condition/quality is still hit or miss. The fact is these shops are still the easiest and most reliable places for milsurp in 2024. Smaller shops' prices are almost equal in a lot of ways since they realized they can get good money for the limited stocks of milsurp still around, while usually having less sizes and genuinely worse condition items than KS or AP.

pre 1970 is kersey wool. 1970-80 is a mix of kersey and melton. anything after is all melton wool. melton is thinner and not as smooth as kersey. best years in my opinion would be 1949-70, as the older ww2 pattern coats don't have lapels and are designed to button all the way to the neck. Pic rel are pre 1949 bridge coats but are identical to ww2 peacoats save for their length

Epaulettes are a holdover from the black powder/musket age, originally they were designed to secure cross-body hip bags and ammo pouches to soldiers as well as packs for long marches but eventually they were made obsolete by chest rigs towards the end of the 19th century so they're purely decorative on more modern uniforms.

they run pretty true to size. m65s fit bigger because they’re meant to be worn over base layers and liners. taller rise than most modern pants but aside from that would recommend comparing measurements. there’s not really specific manufacturers to look for like how there’s alpha for m65/cwu jackets/etc but there are rarer variations than your standard og107.
one thing to note is that nos pairs tend to have their seams give out more than worn pairs. think it’s something to do with the thread degrading without being washed.

Don't get the later model with the stowable hood, it's shit.

The older model is nicely made and has a bunch of cool features, poachers pocket, bottom flap, elbow patches, armpit slits.

It's a very functional looking jacket and the olive drab they use is a bit richly greener than other ODs, so it's harder to match with clothes. It has a shit ton of velcro so you'd better like that. I'm not a fan of diagonal pockets myself so that's another thing to be aware of.

So I would say no if you're looking for more showy army jackets with cooler patterns, otherwise yes, it's a pretty solid jacket.

try to find the older parkas that are 80/20 cotton poly as they’ll be more receptive to the dye than the 65/35. brown should be fine as long as it’s a darker brown and you have the time to properly let it dye and the container to let it sit without it being too bunched up.
i have a 5 gallon steel bucket that i use for bulk dyeing/bigger pieces but you might be able to squeak by with a smaller one or potentially a bathtub. i like the bucket because i can keep it on a hot plate to always keep the dye bath temp hot.

Recently got a M85 czechoslovakian parka. Love that fucker to death but what's with the hood being enormous? I almost always carry an umbrella whenever I think it may rain but on the couple times I was caught unprepared this fucker reached my nose so I had to walk around while only being able to see peoples shoes to (mostly) avoid collisions. Is there a way to break in the hood so it stops being a fag or do I have to larp as zatoichi whenever rain catches me off guard?

If it's a strange industrial smell, just air it out the best you can. I had a combat pack that smelled like a combination of gasoline, paint, stuffy warehouse, and mildew. It eventually went away.
Otherwise, dust it with baking soda and wash it with some too, just air it out if that doesn't work. If it gets fucked it's not likely they'll be readily available replacements

Not much you can do about it, the hoods in army jackets are usually made to be worn with helmets or field caps

At what year did they start introducing synthethica in military clothing?

It's a great compliment to more traditional men's clothing because all of it really takes inspo from either workwear or the military, and there's a lot of crossover. Personally I'm finding I really like field shirts as outer layers in the summer. They keep the sun off of you and breathe well enough that they aren't much hotter than raw-dogging UV rays

Just got that same Slovakian jacket in KS's gumball machine. Not too bad for $10. Already de-badged it though

My spanish paratrooper boots still hurt after having used them a few days

how long does it take to "break them in" ? they mostly hurt the top of my right shoe when walking, because of the way they bend

You might try an insole or some thick socks to give them a tighter fit if they're a bit big for you

Seconding the thick socks. There's no way to fix it besides wearing them, so make sure you have enough padding inside.

Put on thick wool socks and wade through a river, then wear them until they dry.
