Is this a real / normal for a 200m dive watch? I've never really looked through the booklets before but happened to do so on my newest watch and not sure what to think. I've worn watches in my hot tub before.

At your price point, it's better to get a nice quartz rather than a shitty mechanical.
Something like a Casio Oceanus S100 or T200. They have excellent finishing, done by the same place that does Grand Seiko's cases. Solar powered, radio controlled, pretty thin, 100m WR.
They also have normal lugs so you can always swap out the bracelet for a nice strap.

Good to know. I dont typically wear a watch in the tub just for comfort and then having to dry it off but i never saw issues with my orient. Guess ill avoid it from now on though.
>similarly if it's too cold. They're only designed to be used in temps commonly experienced in the ocean.
What are these ranges? I snowboard and used to just wear a smart watch but now that ive been wearing automatic ones it did occure to me that there could be problems from that but i didnt see temp ranges specified anywhere for the ones i have.

>Is this really true? Its nice to not have batteries in your watch and what about something like a Seiko, citizen or orient automatic are really "shitty"

I inclined to agree. Swapping out batteries is no big deal and with a solar watch, the batteries can last literally decades.

Cheap automatics or hand-winding watches will be crudely assembled, unfinished, and innacurate.
To me, at least, the appeal of a mechanical, a good one at least, is the hand crafting that goes into finishing it and adjusting it; making a device drive by gears and springs accurate to a second per day.

>inb4 yeah but my cheap Seiko is accurate
It's called the Seiko lottery for a reason. You might get lucky and get one with a properly lined-up chapter ring and is accurate to within 5 seconds per day. More likely than not, it will have problems that you'll have to convince yourself to overlook.

A good quartz watch at that same price point is not making those compromises. It's the equivalent of a mechanical watch ten times its price.

But how many quartz watches actually are solar? Maybe im just unaware and the majority of them are now but none of the ones i own are. Honestly the best argument for quartz to me (with or without solar) is that you dont need to deal with winding them or setting the time regularly if you have a variety of watches you wear.

Most quartz watches are not solar, but they are common enough to where it's not exactly unusual. Casio, Citizen, and Seiko all make a bunch of them at various price-points. Cartier even makes one.

Just look up the band width for this watch and look for matching band size. As for what kind of replacement thats up to you, id like leather so i'd probably go with a black leather band but some rubber or nylon red band like this could look good if youre into the flashy look.

2k is kind of arbitrary, but I’m just not used to spending this kind of money on a little nicety for myself. I guess the next level is ~10k. Maybe it’s a poor man’s mentality, but ideally if I’m spending a that much for the first time, then it should have some complications.. that’s probably why I’ve always liked the Speedmaster and IWC pilot chronos. My dad has a submariner that will be mine one day, and as much as I want a rolex, that kinda keeps me away from getting one of those at this point in my life.

I dont know. I got a job and moved back home, so I’m making money and I have very little overhead now. This childhood interest has become an obsession.

To add to the other replies. It's basically for warranty reasons. Steam is different that condensed water as a liquid. You probably know Goretex which is very water resistant, yet breathable. That's because gaseous water molecules are way smaller than when they are arranged as a liquid through van der waals interaction. Hence gaseous water could potentially diffuse into the watch around or through the gasket.
In reality most watches can easily survive going into the sauna, I did it while in Finland and two of my mates one with a pelagos the other with a submariner did so as well. It's a warranty claim.

There are many claims what you should not do with mechanical watches. In reality many can handle a lot of abuse and still work fine. So it depends on you what you want to do. For me a watch is a tool and it should handle the way I live and they can do that very well.

If you don't have a problem paying what they're asking for them do it, it's a banger of a watch. this particular one is a 40mm which suits my wrist size better, at least to my eye. its def a big jump in price over the DJ. i guess im a bit scared the gold will ding up more than the steel since im going to be wearing it a lot. might end up just going same style in a steel DJ and using the extra cash for more practical expenses. this one they're asking about 40k. not insane, but about 4X the cost of the DJ for an almost identical look. not yet sure what ill end up with. nothing else in their catalogue really moves me.

Yes, it will get dinged up more than steel. Obviously. But it's tougher than you think. Firstly, it's a LOT of gold, so you never have to worry about it getting so deformed that it's no longer water resistant.
Also, all the little micro-scratches and scuffs gradually blend into one another. Look at a guy's wedding ring some time. It will look more like a sort of surface treatment than a million scratches.

There's something cool about seeing a guy wearing a DD that is worn-in, like the wearer doesn't give a fuck.

They all have it, the layer under it is too thin to support to the indices so that it let's the light through for the solar panel. That's why they chose to do the washi paper dials as well because it is opaque.

>Is the Era of gold watches, rolex in particular, being seen as tacky over?

Two-tone vs full gold are generally perceived very differently.
It's been nothing but steel, steel, steel for the past few years and people are starting to look back into precious metals, dressier pieces, etc.
Two-tone watches are popping up a little more, often in combinations like gold and ceramic. But wearing it is a little trickier since it nearly always carries the stigma of
>Couldn't afford the full gold version, eh?
There are exceptions, of course, most notably the two-tone Santos, which is the iconic Santos look.

Sup /fa/gs. I remember having seen a fairly weird watch years ago, and I can't remember it for the life of me now. All I can remember about it is that it was a minimalist-ish design (think modern geometric design elements, muted colors) and had a moving dial that I believe was a day/night thing. Very tacky, I know, but it's bugging me that I can't remember what it was. Words like "zenith" come to mind for some reason, and I don't mean the company. If it's of any use, it was also probably related to some /g/ mechanical watch threads way back in the day.

I know it's very little to work off and a complete crapshoot, but if any of you have absolutely any clue as to what it could be, much appreciated.

keep the sub, trade in the other two.
I really wanted to like the explorer, but it just feels like a sub-lite. It's trying to be dressy while sticking to its sporty roots and ends up unable to do either well.
dd+sub covers pretty much all your rolex needs. maybe except for a daytona.
btw, the day function of the dd is not as useful as you think. even with my sharp eyes, the font is too small to read the day easily. a bigger font with only the first few letters of the day, just as casio or seiko does it, makes more sense.
so get the dd for the right reasons, that is feeling like you grabbed the world by the balls, not for the day complication.
p.s. if you don't already feel like you grabbed the world by the balls, it won't work on you. if you want to be more modest, classy, old-money about it, get a calatrava.
