Balding Greek living in Germany. Has a tendency of buying too large watches for his small wrist. Cleans cars for a living. Has a Tudor, Homos, and some Seikos. Life currently falling apart. Responds by getting more material things and falling in love with strippers. Excellent at ban evading.

>Citizen drunk/Finncel
25% Finnish, 50% Swedish, rest is a mystery. Lives in Finland. Works as a shelver in a grocery store. Alcoholic. Only owns one watch, but posts a lot, mostly about alcohol or coins. Possibly immortal. Tragic case of gyno.

>Mortadello
Very positive and friendly, but doesn't post anything of any consequence. Lawyer. Obese. Posts improving photos of amazing watches. Lies about his age. Does not take criticism well.

What exactly causes the immense seethe against Rolex? Grand Seiko I get, spring drive is bullshit and it's the redditor's choice of watch I guess. But Rolex? Maybe annoying ADs, I could see how annoying ADs could drive some people to dislike the brand. But to be that emotional about a watch brand because ADs of it annoy you kinda puts you on the same level as those richfags who can't stop praising Rolex while shitting on other brands, or those fools who have a visceral reaction of hate upon hearing the name Grand Seiko.
Just really fucking silly. They're watches.

Rolex is the first leg of "that's too expensive for a watch"

Basically anything up to an Omega priced watch is reasonable for a regular person, but Rolex kind of acts as the gateway into the "luxury" watch world, so when you look at Rolex designs that seem relatively simple and involve fairly mundane materials (steel watch, no crazy dials, chronos, etc) then hear what a new one costs at MSRP or on the secondary market the immediate reaction becomes

>Seriously? I would never spend THAT much on a watch. My phone tells the time just as well.

The difference is Rolex is the most well known luxury brand, so it's the one that gets this reaction the most. Regular people don't even know what AP, Patek, JLC, VC, etc are most of the time so they don't even really register if they see somebody wearing one.

>> No.17959227

>>17959222
>What exactly causes the immense seethe against Rolex?
Like you said, the AD games (which really are a thing of the past outside a few models like the Daytona and GMT-M2) put a bad taste in people's mouths.
That then, in combination with the annual price hikes and people who have one acting like they've been let into a super-exclusive club, causes people to go apoplectic.

The Grand Seiko seethe is different. That's targeted almost entirely at the brand's fans. The criticisms of GS are basically limited to an overabundance of limited editions, poor bracelet design, and some overly optimistic pricing; but no one's actually mad at the brand itself.

Their fans, on the other hand, are insufferable because they are obsessed with everyone else validating their purchase. They will keep hectoring you nonstop until you accept that GS is better in every way than Tudor/Omega/Rolex/whatever.

A guy known as "tudorfag" got a replica black bay 58 and was shit on because of that. He was an autist of highest caliber and started to spam the threads with his shit. He would always make the op at 309 posts and if he didn't get OP he would spam gay interracial porn all over the thread. I should note that he sometimes bombed his own OPs full of gayporn as well when he had his fits. There were other avatarfags around then too like Windyknob, a 40 something year old recovering alcoholic, he used to post AA tokens and pics with his teenage girlfriend. There was a Casio aq230 shill as well. Beadposter was probably tudorfag and what he would do is spampost these cringy "wristgame" pictures filling the thread. Of all the criticism against Rolex, this one is probably the weirdest. Watches are like 300 years old. Everything has been done already. There's literally no room for innovation unless you go full retard like pic related.

exactly. you have the money, they have the model in stock. you can't simply buy it as a new customer, because
>we don't know you! we have to sell at MSRP, but you could make a profit if you sold it on the grey market. that's probably what you want, so we won't hand it out!
rather reasonable, but: the wait list etc. is exactly what makes people accept a markup for a "second hand" watch just so that they can skip the games
>we'll put you on our wait list, currently it's X years
well, they don't put you anywhere. There is one benefit to wait with the purchase and that is that you have time to consider what you really want after trying on some models. Dealing with guys who spontaneously buy the watch, then get buyers remorse and return it, or want to exchange it for another model would be a pain in the ass I guess.

I'm really tired of the "rich people don't care about losing money" meme. It's literally the opposite.

Here's how actual rich people operate with non-essential stuff (basically jewelry, watches, expensive furniture, paintings and even wines)
>set a budget
>look up what's the best value for money
>readjust budget if necessary
>buy thing
>enjoy it for some time
>sell it at minimal loss (or even better with a bonus) in order to seize new opportunity
Rich people are rich because investment is a second nature. Their taste and buying habits set the codes for luxury. They are the reason why 30 years old Calatravas are worth 20k today.

Only people with a poorfag mindset walk into a Jaeger Lecoultre boutique, fall in love with the latest rose-gold-diver-chronograph-moonphase-calendar shitter and throw 50k at it.

It was supposed to replace the sub as the cool sportswatch to flex, but that didn't work out. Damn shame, if it had worked the sub might have become a bit like the airking, a relatively cheap entry into rolex. Oh well.

>> No.17959738

>>17959732
It was supposed to replace the Sub altogether. When Rolex was moving upmarket following the quartz crisis, the Submariner was basically unchanged since the early 1970s. They even kept making the 5513 until 1990.
The Yacht-Master was going to be a more luxurious diver but then the reception to the idea that the Sub was to be discontinued was more venomous than Rolex expected. So the Sub was kept alive and the new model was re-christened Yacht-Master.

you wold never give a very cheap car as a gift for example, because it will just cause problems for the new owner. i think the same way about a watch. if only thing i can get is overpriced mall shit that they make for 50 bucks and market and sell for 10-20x, that will break down in couple of years, then i will think of something else to give them

You can get some decent pieces from Hamilton and Tissot at that price range. "Lasting a lifetime" is a bit tough though, you'll have to specifically make sure to get one that uses the old ETA movements because the newer ones, while generally more accurate out of the box, are apparently fairly hard to service and probably will be more like a ten year watch than a fifth year one

For some reason it feels like many grandpas like giving grandchildren their gold plated vintage Seiko 5s. My judgement of a pvd gold Seiko 5 aside, it works perfectly fine as a family heirloom (maybe in a not gaudy cheao looking variation) and even if the movement had major issues, every watch repair shop in the fucking world can fix it.

I would spare you the details but think of powermatic as a cheaper to produce disposable version of the 2824 using plastic parts. We'll look at Tissot and Hamilton, Swatch Group's better affordable brands with name recognition among normal people.

The Tissot some anon suggested is probably the best buy because it's a top of the range COSC certified chronometer version of the 2824. Only negative is the rather low 30m water resistance.
https://www.ashford.com/tissot-t0064081105700.html
https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/a-week-on-the-wrist-the-tissot-le-locle-chronometre

Hamilton, let's take a look at older, pre-Powermatic models on Ashford. Hamilton mostly used the ETA 2892, a movement that's very similar but somewhat thinner than the 2824. I prefer the 2824 but it's also good and reliable.

https://www.ashford.com/hamilton-h38755181.html
https://www.ashford.com/hamilton-h38525881.html

Ashford is an Authorized Dealer for Tissot and Hamilton, you get the full manufacturer's warranty and everything, same as if you'd bought the watch in a Tissot/Hamilton boutique but their prices are much better.

Ashford has some good deals on Bucherers, a brand that's positioned higher than Tissot and Hamilton and somewhat hip because of the John Wick movies. Bucherer uses ETA 2824 movements with or without power reserve modules. Ashford isn't and AD for Bucherer, so there's no international manufacturer's warranty and Ashford will take care of any guarantee claims.
https://www.ashford.com/brand/carl-f-bucherer.html?gender=MEN

These are all dress watches, that means a limited (30-50m) water resistance but a traditional style that won't go out of fashion anytime soon.

Swatch Group's Certina produces sportier watches, you can take a look at their models on Jomashop, but they are not Authorized Dealers for any Swatch Group brands.

its 1-2-3-4 cm which is 10-20-30-40mm. So the watch is round about 33mm. The sqare with 2m is the whole length of the measuring instrument.

the 41 has minute indications around the dial (60 5 10 15 20 25 and so on)
the 36 has a cleaner dial with just notches on the seconds
obviously some dials like the wimbledon on 36 does have the minutes too, and the roman dial on the 41 does not have it, also the diamond bezels do not have it
also you can just see how fat the bezel looks
the 41 has a flat smooth bezel 36 has domed bezel
it's pretty easy
>vintage dj
