Christmas has been busy beyond belief, but nothing to complain about. How are you doing, CitizenChad? I saw in the last thread that an Anon got one of the moonphase Citizens...lovely to see them!

>> No.17950776

a black strap is surprisingly formal. if my dress watch has a black leather strap, can i only wear this with black leather shoes and belt? i find it much harder to match with my clothes compared to my brown leather strap watches. brown belts now make no sense. short sleeves make no sense too. or maybe i just can't pull it off.

>>17950776
No, you can wear a black strap watch with anything. Today it's okay to mix and match leather colours on clothing, though it isn't advisable. A short sleeve with a black leather strap will look just fine; very 60's/70's.

Other things to take into consideration are the colours available from the watch itself, the function of the piece, etc. Wearing a Calatrava on leather while dressing up to cut down a tree in your yard would look as odd as wearing swimming trunks underneath a shearling leather jacket; colours in this case don't matter much.

Which dress watch is it? If we see it, maybe we can help.

>A Lange & Sohne
New money disguised as old money. Grail watches for people with a poorfag mindset
>Audemars Piguet
If you've already heard their CEO talking and you still want one, you're either a nigger or a boomer desperate to stay young
>Blancpain
"b-b-b-b-but we've released a dive watch 3 months before Rolex". That's a lie though, check Perezcope's article about the Fifty Fathoms
>Breguet
Prestigious brand run by very incompetent people (Swatch Group). Possibly the worst value for money you can get. Kind of sad actually
>Breitling
Fun watches but if your IQ is above average you shouldn't get one
>Bulgari
The Octo Finissimo (basically their only watch) looks like it was AI generated. Won’t age well
>Cartier
Only worth it if you go gold and mechanical. DO NOT get a quartz Cartier. The Santos is VERY Reddit
>Casio
They're good for outdoor stuff. Never wear one in the city or people will assume you’re kind of retarded
>Chopard
They’ve made a Nautilus cope, which immediately disqualifies them as a respectable brand. Some people like their small second dress watches but they're actually ugly. Irrelevant brand
>FP Journe
Weird looking watches with dumb complications for eccentric boomers. François-Paul seems like a fun dude though.
>Girard Perregaux
Once the integrated bracelet fad will finaly die out, this brand will have to declare bankruptcy and nobody will notice
>Glashutte Original
Obvious cope for A Lange & Sohne. People who wear these have very low self esteem
>Grand Seiko
I honestly have no idea who buy these watches. The name is really stupid, nobody wants a Seiko
>Hublot
Budget Richard Mille
>H. Moser
Shitters for histrionic cryptobros. Very cringe.
>IWC
They're the textbook definition of "mall watches". Only people with horrible taste think they look cool
>Jaeger Lecoultre
They're trying so hard to make affordable high horology, which is embarrassing. The Reverso is borderline Reddit. Also Lenny Kravitz is their ambassador. Avoid.

>>17950867
>MB&F
People who wear these probably think talking very loud will make them sound interesting. Basically another brand for histrionic assholes
>Omega
Strong douchebag vibes, especially the Seamaster 300M and the Aqua Terra. The Speedmaster is alright though but the brand is ruining it with the whole Moonwatch thing
>Panerai
They make dive watches on leather straps, which is incredibly stupid. Some of them look kinda cool though
>Parmigiani Fleurier
They've made some of the most disgusting looking watches ever created but their current artistic director seems to have good taste. The Tonda PF looks quite good
>Patek Philippe
Thousands of disgusting watches but maybe 10 HIGHLY DESIRABLE watches that somehow make the brand still relevant today. The 3940 is possibly the best watch ever made
>Piaget
Used to make very sexy little watches with stone dials. Now they make ugly shitters for people who can't afford a Nautilus
>Ressence
Mechanical watches that look like Samsung smart watches. I have no idea who buy those
>Richard Mille
Casio for billionaires. Fun watches to wear at the Monaco Grand Prix. Poorfags hate the brand which make it highly desirable
>Rolex
The best brand. Vintage, neo vintage or modern. You can't go wrong with a Rolex. Only hated by contrarians. The fact they're kind of hard to get make them even more desirable
>Tag Heuer
Same as Breitling but for slightly more retarded people. Their most iconic watch (the Monaco) is one of the ugliest shitters ever made
>Tudor
They're fine until you hit 35. After that just get a Rolex or women will make fun of you
>Vacheron Constantin
People like the brand because the name sounds cool and the logo is nice, but they haven't made a single good watch in 300 years of existence
>Zenith
The only reason this brand still exists is because Rolex bought them some movements 40 years ago

Ok I need help.

I never cared for good clothes or watches but I found this ICW a few weeks ago and Ive been obsessing over it ever since.
With the xmas break Im bored and reading more about watches which is the last hobby I need to pick up now
My gf is even unironically saying I should get the watch. Its over 20k Euro. Thats half of our half deposit and the stupid gf says go for it.
I asked here for alternatives under 5k. Someone mentioned the Oris Big Pointer bronze which I went to see in person. Its simply not the same.
On that same day I tried a 43' IWC which was way too big for me so thats another thing to consider. It was very similar to my grail watch but it was too bulky.
The watch is not to be found on replica websites
What do you suggest in my situation. No, im not dropping 20k on my first watch since I had a casio when I was 12

That is the wrong conclusion to draw. If you've handled an IWC then the Seiko will feel unbearably cheap.

There is no such thing as a watch journey. Buying a sequence of progressively more expensive shitters only serves to get you used to the idea of spending a large amount of money on a watch

The correct conclusion to draw is to buy the watch you want. If you don't want to pay for it, then you don't actually want it that much.

have you looked at any alternatives at all? IWC is a dogshit brand, try to avoid it
Laco, Sinn, Damasko, basically anything german should be making a watch like that, save for the gold case and green dial
it's a flieger chronograph with a day and date, there really are better alternatives than spending 20k of which you can't afford on your first watch
also, chronographs are babys first watch obsessions, do you really need the function or do you like how the subdials and a busy dial looks?
>if you've handled an IWC then Seiko will feel unbearably cheap
the feeling would mostly be from your wallet, there is not a single watch in the world that would be 1000x better than a bottom of the barrel seiko or even some chinkshit, never trust msrp prices as an indication for quality

Since the posters here tend to be singularly un-fashionable (generally too fat) you're mostly going to see alternating posts of flexing (or attempting to) and seething.

I've tried them. They're very light and comfortable. They don't add bulk like a Nato strap does. Putting it on is like one of those old man's watches with the stretchy bracelet. You have to get used the watch being slightly tighter than usual.

I don't know how durable they are because the elastic obviously won't last forever. I can't say if they last five years or five months.

I think they look really good on a thin, skin-diver type watch, like a Tudor BB58.

No. There'd be no point to owning a nice watch if you never left your house. Like with anything else, don't be stupid. Don't flash your watch around. Avoid bad neighborhoods. It's not any different than being scared to walk around with a lot of cash in your wallet.
>would you take watches like that on vacation?
Yes. Of course.
>how does insurance work if you have a 20k watch with you and loose it?
That depends on the policy. Most homeowner's insurance offers coverage for jewelry/watches but you have to look at the specifics of the policy. Loss and theft aren't always automatically covered. Sometimes it's just like your home burned down and your watch collection was also burned, so it's covered.

One of the worst Rolex ever made. And I say this in a world where the Yacht-Master and the Sky Dweller exist.
The whole point of buying a Datejust nowadays is to get that classic "vintage" vibe of the 36mm.
The movement is too small for the case, which you can tell just by looking at the placement of the date window and the proportions.
That watch was made only to make some money on obese boomers, with absolutely regard to the brand's history. Unironically kill yourself if you're even considering buying it. Just looking at that picture makes me sick. If I become CEO of Rolex one day, the first thing I'll do is to erase that watch from the history of the brand and have killed every people involved with it.

See, I don't think the Datejust looks vintage at all. It's entirely timeless. Old DJs don't look old, unless they're in rough shape. It's just about the perfect watch with the perfect proportions.

All the criticisms of the Sky-Dweller ultimately just boil down to the size. This, in itself, is a criticism of many modern Rolexes.
The nu-Sub, the Sea-Dweller, the Explorer II, the YM42, etc. are all big watches and their polishing makes them look larger still. In the old days, Rolexes could fit on smaller wrists, now they can't.

If the Sky-Dweller was the size of the Daytona, no one would complain.

I'm intrigued by what this brand is doing; they offer complications that are severely undercutting competition. There's just something about the dials that I find so lacking. Like the one you posted just looks... boring. Like it's an afterthought. The offset boxed recess on the text looks so bad. The globe recess has an awkward gap between it and the seconds indices. The date window. Everything else about the watch is passable but the dial is just so lacking.

If you don't know what day of the week it is, you're either an alcoholic coming off a binge, or you're a child who hasn't started school yet.
The month display is because it's an annual calendar.
Also, it's not just a travel watch. Plenty of people need to keep track of multiple timezones at once, like if their company has multiple locations around the world.

And beyond all of that, it's a cool complication for its own sake. Using the bezel as a control is pretty unique in the watch world.

WHAT IS THE POINT OF HAVING DATE AND MONTH FUNCTIONS WITHOUT A DAY FUNCTION?
What's the use for this watch? What kind of problem does it solve? Give me actual examples of situations where you need to know the date, the month BUT NOT THE DAY.
>b-b-b-but it's an annual calendar watch
Annual calendars tell you the day.
>y-you don't need a day function
I DON'T NEED A MONTH FUNCTION EITHER but I'm more likely to forget the day than the month. If you're telling me the month, at least tell me day too otherwise the information is incomplete.

Would you IDIOTS be okay with a watch telling you the hour, the date and the year? Who knows, this may be useful while you're in private jet signing documents between two timezone on new year's eve, uh?

Citizen Eco-Drive is very good for a quality watch for the Middle Class working man, I have had my pic related Citizen Nighthawk since November 2015 and it runs like a champion and keeps dead accurate time. For the last 4 years it has been in its case in the dark in my dresser, I charged it up by the window for 3 days and it’s been back up and running perfectly and keeping bang on accurate time like brand new. You just can’t go wrong with these Eco-Drive watches, I’m a big Citizen fan due to this watch.

Junk.

Hajime Asaoka is the like Japanese Stepan Sarpaneva. Each are brilliant watchmakers that make vanishingly small numbers of watches per year.

Just like Sarpaneva has SUF Helsinki to make cheap watches that capitalize on his fame, Asaoka has Kurono. You're not getting anything close to actual Asaoka quality. It's a bog standard case with a neat dial and an unfinished movement (Miyota, IIRC). When you break down the amount of parts and labor that go into it, they're actually kind of a ripoff.

Their distribution model is weird. They don't do limited editions per se. They will make a watch for every single person who orders one, but order windows are only ever open for a very short time before the factory gets too many orders and closes the window.

It doesn't have to be two-tone. It comes in all sorts of of dial, bezel, and bracelet configurations.

A 36mm, smooth bezel, Oyster bracelet, stick dial in black is effectively an Explorer with a date. Same toughness, same shock protection, same water resistance.

I’m not sure if I want solar or automatic, also not sure if Sapphire over Mineral makes that much of a difference. I’m looking at the 5 Sports GMT in black/blue dial, also the turtle with mineral crystal in classic black dial with black diver band. Also I’m looking at solar divers in both mineral and sapphire, I want something to literally wear every single day for 10 hrs a day for years on end. Kinda leaning towards automatic since I only have a Citizen Nighthawk Eco-Drive, I can’t decide for the life of me.
