Starting to like those trousers more and more this winter. Recently I’ve ordered a Holland & Sherry solid grey flannel pleats that are much more formal, so the thin stripe on this pair is a much welcomed more casual detail.

Btw, i think some people here have a really high bar for inspo. I dont have to like every single fit a person posts, or even every single element of a fit they post, to get inspired by it. Im not really into dividing things into neat categories like that. But i would say they easily fit into an ivy or preppy wardrobe, but not trad.
Just keep in mind theyre rugged and casual pants. You'd want to pair them with similarly rugged, textured, and irregularly colored garments. Tweed, waxed jackets, heavy knitwear, chukkas, desert boots, etc. For a preppy look that leans more casual and less rugged you could pair rugby shirts, sweatshirts, sweaters, etc.

The good:
The fit of the clothes is fine. That turtleneck suits you.
The bad:
Colors are boring and do not fit together well. Dark green is not ideal with black imo.
Belt is obviously too long.
I hate Chelsea boots as they always feel too casual for dressy outfits and too dressy for casual outfits, unless worn with Cuban heels and 60s suiting, or with a very round toe like some RM Williams/Blunstones.
This also really needs a nice jacket or blazer to feel like a complete outfit.

So I just received a Barbour SL Spey (https://www.barbour.com/uk/catalog/product/view/id/142524/s/barbour-sl-spey-wax-jacket/)) , first wax jacket ever, initial thoughts incase someone else was in my position:
>Olive is a beautiful colour
>The jacket feels very nice and substantial, much less cheap than it appeared in photographs and fit pics
>The collar is much bigger than I expect but looks very nice, and much nicer in person than on photographs imo
>The collar frames the face very well
>The cropped shape is very cool
>Chest measurement is too small for a jacket really, especially with any sort of layering, not sure if I should keep it for the unique shape or send it back (I have a 46" chest, bought an XL, the garment measures about 48" P2P since it is an SL model)
>The wax feels more annoying than I thought but would and I can feel it on my fingertips each time I touch it and it transfers on to everything I touch, I really hate the feeling but maybe I'd get used to it?
>No idea if it is sylkoil or thornproof

I'll probably order another normal jacket to try, maybe a bedale, because I think this one is likely too small which is a shame because it looks great.

But to my eyes, this outfit shows a lack of style, coherence (and confidence). As I put it previously, it manages to look childish and tryhard at once.
Also, admittedly not clothing related but greasy long red locks protudring from a teenage cap look repulsive to me. Not much can be done to fix one's putrid anglo genes or this unsightly face but that hair can be cut.

I was looking for a shorter wax jacket, and it was between this or a Barbour transport. This looked better to me, despite being even less useful than the transport thanks to being slimmer, and having no pockets for my hands. The jacket doesn't look quite as cropped as the originals did in your pic, I'm sure it's made longer in this Japanese range, also helps that I am fairly broad and only 5'10.

The only reason the state vs private dichotomy exists is because undergraduate is course only. But the bread and butter of academia is research, which most graduate programs are. There are graduate programs like MBA, MPPs, stuff like that which are course/professional programs but since you didn’t specify I’m going to assume you’re talking about a research degree and not a course degree. If that’s the case, the state school distinction means nothing. Look up how many R1 schools are state schools. There are a ton. So you have to take greater care regarding what program you’re doing. Research? At an R1? It’s good. Course? At neither an R1 or R2? Probably worthless.

Three new Black Friday cops, gray flannel Aleks model from Kit Blake, browns model Brooklyn from Rota through No Man Walks Alone.

Kit Blake's great, nice, above belly button high rise and full leg (bottom hem is around 10 in), although the fabric is a bit too light (270g/m2) for it to drape well. Instead in kind of bunches and wraps around my calves. Great deep pleats too. Recommended for thick legged guys, so go right ahead if you squat often.
Price's a bit steep at 290€, even more so when taking customs into account (which were almost 100€ for EU importation).
Overall 8/10.

Rota's ones are a specific model made for NMWA which features a higher rise and wide leg, on par with the Kit Blake model. Very high quality, seams are impeccable and the construction is superb. Light brown's heavyish linen (300g) and surprisingly easy to press. Dark brown one is light wool twill (270g) and thus has the same draping problem as the Kit Blake's one.
However there is a hard negative: these trousers are EXTREMELY short and are probably meant to be worn "flooding" style. That means no turn-up cuff, which i prefer. In fact their whole length is just enough to barely break at the ankle, and I'm not particularly tall (1m80, size 50).
Price is suffocating at 425€ a piece, but with the BF sale i could cop the two for around 470€.
On another note, those trousers give a "I am an inked millennial and I wear high-rise trousers with wifebeaters and a vintage belt" vibe, so if you try to dress really /tip/, those aren't for you.
I would give them a 7/10.

I want to improve my sweater collection but am unsure if crew necks or v-necks are better. I used to think v-necks were they way to go, since the shape complements an OCBD and mirrors the shape of a jacket's lapels. But on the other hand im starting to appreciate the casual vibe of crew necks, and i figure it's more functional to keep your collarbone/neck area warm. What do you guys think?

>> No.17919584

>>17919547
Crew necks are not more casual than v-necks, I think this is just your associations. If anything, they’re much more formal and closed when worn with a collared shirt, and even a tie. You shouldn’t really wear v-necks without a tie unless they aren’t very deep at all, they’re kind of demanding for some type of neckwear. I think that crew necks are far better than v-necks when without a tie. If you still want a v-shape, then a cardigan looks far better with no tie.

>> No.17919607

>>17919584
I was thinking casual in the sense that they seem more old-school and relaxed in attitude. Like the difference between a navy blazer and a chore coat. The former is technically more formal, yet it can feel more casual in a way, because its a garment that certain people wear because it's just the way their circles dress. Whereas with a chore coat, you know the guy is dressing intentionally to look cool. Not that theres anything wrong with that.

A masters would be a good way to get your foot in the door yeah. It's good you have money because the majority of masters degrees are non-funded and you have to pay full price. If you can sneak into a PhD program somewhere then you wouldn't have to pay. If you have legitimate industry experience and can interview well you should be able to overcome the poor grades. They're more interested in your capacity to work on your own in research than they are classroom performance. Your startup success may allow you to demonstrate that despite your grades.

I'm the original one you asked again. Please ignore any online or self-guided programs they're seen as complete memes in academia alongside certifications. If your startup experience is legitimate I recommend you try and get into a mid-level PhD program. Write about your interest in research and cite specific papers written by specific professors at the universities to which you're applying. Unsolicited cold-emailing doesn't always work, especially if you're a thirdie, but the boomer firm-handshake advice can take you quite far if you're charismatic and likeable. I think they work well as a means of shortening the presence of the shirt.
As in, rather than people noticing you have a waistcoat, they first notice that your shirt doesn't take up much presence in the outfit.
See pic related, the waistcoat serves not to add an additional element, but rather to reduce the presence of the shirt by concealing much of it

Hm, well, you have British makers like Harley and Bosie that sell ring-spun, saddle-shoulder seamless knits from Shetland wool for around £90, but it’s going to be expensive to ship in the US.
Better try your luck with second hand and brands such as Johnston of Elgin, William Lockie, Ballantine

Any idea where I can find a knit like this? I've checked all of the usual places and really struggle to find anything like it.

I love the rib, the roll neck, and the shoulder but I'm convinced it's Chinese made since they don't state it anywhere.

Kissinger’s legacy, to the degree he could ever have one, is in shambles. He’s a shining example of cultural nepotism in the United States. Why anyone going into politics would look to him is beyond me, but then again, politics today is a professional game for yuppie law graduates so I’m not surprised you don’t get all this.

You can get Pendleton wool knits for less than $100 in various places. Pendleton is to wool sweaters what Levi’s is to jeans imo.

A waistcoat works if the suit is tailored and and you’re not fat imo.

I live in Sweden.

Where do I buy good quality suede derbies? Preferably dark blue. Or is this a faux pas?

>> No.17922579

I confess that I buy brands partly based on their clothing labels. If a brand has a particularly shit label inside the item, then I avoid it. For example, I will always get shetlands from Jamieson’s instead of Harley.
