how hard is Solidworks to learn with no design/engineering background? Are there any tutorials for watchmaking specifically? Also is it just for the case or do you design the dial in it too?

Plus 300m WR and a solid caseback!!

The midcase looks pretty thin, so I'm guessing some of that height is due to the tall box-section sapphire.

The movement is the L888.6 which is an ETA 2892 with a silicone hairspring and the beat rate slowed so that it can have 72hr power reserve.

its fairly easy, it works the same way most engineering 3d modeling programs work. I wouldnt fuck around trying to torrent solidworks. they're ferocious with their lawsuits and getting hit with a 250k fine isnt uncommon. if you want to learn get fusion 360, it works very very similarly.
im not a watchmaker at all, it was just a fun little project I did out of boredom, I do everything from gun part production (lol europoor as well), production line components, car parts etc.
but modeling works the same way for all of it, its not specific to the field you want to pursue.

I could make the dial as well but I like how the stock black one looks in the case as is and I dont really think I can add much on the little space you have appart from just making fancy swirly patterns that the endmill leaves on the surface, but im not much of a fan of that

Rolex also comes in a wider variety of sizes so you can get one to fit your wrist. The Grand Seiko is 41mm x 49mm so it will look large on even an average sized 7" wrist.
The Rolex is also thinner.

This part is a little esoteric but Seiko does not use threaded crown tubes but press-fit or welded crown tubes (how they attach them to the case. the crowns of both are screw-down) so if the crown tube's threads ever need to be replaced, the case needs to be scrapped. Seiko's crown tubes have been a known weak point for a while.

Yeah, it's not as much of a faceplant as it sounds, but it's not a choice I would have made.

When machined with tight-enough tolerances, an interference fit is better for water resistance than a threaded crown tube. (Threads always need a little slop otherwise you could never turn them.)

Here is becomes a philosophical thing. The Rolex is meant to be serviced, so the crown tube is replaceable. The Seiko is meant to be disposable so the crown tube is pressed and welded. When salt water corrodes the tube to crown threads, then there's no possibility of replacement.

In practice, it will happen every so often that someone will either overtorque their screw-down crown and end up pulling out the tube, or they cross-thread/strip the threads.

>not sure which one would be better long term for servicing
The older, bigger name brand attached to the larger company will always be better for service.
Microshitters are usually too small to have a service department and when you send them your watch they usually just outsource the service work to local watchmakers anyway.

If the microshitter uses nothing but off-the-shelf parts, then any watchmaker in the world will be able to service it, but any specific parts (dial, hands, crown, bezel insert) can only come from the factory. Most companies issue independent watchmakers service accounts, so they can order those parts from the factory and complete the service.

The problem arises when you consider the longevity of these brands. Rolex, Omega, Cartier, etc, have been around for centuries. I recently had my 40-year old Rolex serviced and the AD didn't even blink when I handed it to them. A microbrand founded last year and has a total of two employees? Who knows if they're going to be around next month? Even if they do last, how many spares do they keep for a watch that they make less than a hundred of in total? What kind of warehouse space do they have?

It's not the strength of the tube itself, it's how it's installed.

If you screw it into the case, you can unscrew it and replace it when it wears out.
If it's press-fit and welded, when it wears out, you're fucked. You cannot replace it.

If it's a screw down crown you can strip the threads pretty easily.
If exposed to salt water or other chemicals, it can corrode the metal enough to where it doesn't seal against the crown gasket.

GS does too i think, they probably only manufacture them for 10 years after the watch was discontinued and keep the parts in stock. That one story you keep referencing was from 5 years ago and for a vintage GS (a 56xx i think) from the 60's. Rolex doesn't have parts for an Oysterquartz either...

QRD:

It started with a wealthy anon from somewhere in the global south. He's the one with the FP Journe. Spectacular collection. So-so as a poster. Anyway, this one seething poorfag would post this nonsense rhyme at him every time and the first word in it was "Mortadello" and so everyone started calling him that or just "Mort", for short. (He doesn't mind.)

Another poster, otherwise called OmegaDrunk, has an identical posting style to Mort. Avatarfagging with pics, just asking inane shit like "How are we doing tonight, friends?" Just here because he's IRL lonely. His collection is nice enough, but it's not as nice as Mort's, ergo he's a poorer version of Mortadello: Poortadello.

The Credor-owner had a spell a few threads ago where he would post pics of his watches on hookers he would hire while his marriage was falling apart, so naturally, he's going to be Whoretadello.

Some boards would benefit from tripfagging, like /o/ for example. If there is a question where technical know-how would be required, an experienced and well respected tripfag's opinion, or in /o/'s case, advice, would have a lot more weight because people would know that it comes from a knowledgeable source that has proved itself time and time again to be useful and true.
About /wt/, the only thing it would accomplish is to eliminate the first response of being accused a poorfag or someone who doesn't even owns watches. And maybe be helpful when someone asks about reliability and or overalk quality, if someone owns the watch, his opinion obivously matters more than someone who just looked at a specsheet, pics and listened to youtubers. So I guess it's mostly useless.

Serious question for once, about buying watches in Japan- from the advices that I read here, online in general and by asking around, the best play would be to travel there without a watch, and return with only One. The reason of course is to avoid getting fucked by the "IRS" or in my case, the import and mwst.-Tax and the fees etc.
Wear the one watch you bought in the return flight, and send the Boxe (empty) and papers yourself back to your home.
Problem is, I want to get at least 3 watches so I have to decide. I am leaning more towards a Credor but the other considerations are Grand Seiko (of course) and a Breguet Classique.
Which one would you get? And do you guys have any other advice?

The quartz watch was cheap and fast,
An unstoppable force at last.
It went on a rampage, unopposed,
As the mechanical watches were exposed.

The quartz watch dominated the land,
Crushing the old mechanical brands.
The quartz watch had come to stay,
And its victory put them in dismay.

But soon the quartz watch had to face,
A new and more advanced race.
The high precision quartz watch was here,
To put the cheap quartz watch in fear.

The battle was fierce and the fight was hard,
The cheap quartz watch felt so scarred.
But with all its might and resolve,
The quartz watch would not dissolve.

In the end the cheap quartz watch,
Rallied back and made a catch.
It managed to defeat the high precision quartz watch,
And become the sure-fire top notch.

I'm Norwegian myself. We have a 200km long border with Russia. The reason why Scandinavian and Nordic people generally dislike Russia is because of their constant attempts to spy and to gain influence in these countries. I'm on the fence about buying an SPB143 from seiko after hearing so many horror stories. My snk381 that I paid 65 euros gains 1 sec a day if I wear it 24/7 (gains 5 sec a day otherwise).
Meanwhile the other seiko watch that I built from scratch with a nh36a is perfect, it's a little slow on the wrist and fast dial up in the watch box, so if I wear it daily even after a month it's barely 5 seconds off.
Should I look elsewhere?

You can always take it to a local watchmaker for a regulation, it shouldn't cost that much and take that long.

Im iffy about this. I asked our local watchmaker if I could use their Weishi and the guy deadass told me he doesnt have one

Same dude charges $25 for regulation. How the hell do you do that without a timegrapher?

Watch is fine. Try before you buy because that generation case-bracelet is considered uncomfortable by many.
Don't buy from European Watch Company. They are dishonest traders.

Yeah I'm going to take a look at it next week. Thanks for the tip about the bracelet. The bastard used to cost around 10k, now it's trading around 18k. I don't know if I can justify that.

There is a big seiko modding aftermarket scene. Just buy the parts you like and assemble it.

When an jeet does it to a swiss it's called a "frankenstein watch", but with the seikos it's ok?

>> No.17892907

>>17892904
Yes, because the frankenwatch is being sold as the genuine article. Modded Seikos are usually DIY and are always sold as having been modded.

>How's the bracelet? Hollow end links?

I have an M170 lineage, the bracelet for the titanium model has a weird quirk IT'S THINNER. The steel watch has a normal folded steel bracelet, nothing special about it, titanium however is different, it's no folded but it's thin and doesn't exactly fit the endlink, so there's a bit of a gap between the bracelet and the end link on the titanium version.

But that's specifically the titanium M170, i've seen different shots of the M100 (your pic) and couldn't spot any issue.

Another thing about this line of watches is that the bracelet only has two micro adjustment holes so i personally could only get it a bit tight, or a bit loose, no perfect fit.

So I ended up buying a shiny polished leather band and wearing them like this. Leather + Titanium feels amazing on the wrist, the watch is just weightless and leather is super comfy. Bracelets are overrated.
