Lorier does the thing some other microbrands do where they try to make vintage style watches but instead of just making classically styled watches with modern features and materials they make them with acrylic crystals and other nasty relics of the past that are better left in the past. If the idea of seeing what it was like in the 50s wearing scratch magnets with hollow endlinks and mesh bracelets maybe you can appreciate what they're doing, but if you want a generally good watch by modern standards probably look elsewhere.

>terminate the e-steel program (no one cares)
>give the due line 100m water resistance minimum
>make a luminor and radiomir at 42mm with 200m water resistance

The issue with Panerai is that they don't seem to actually know what they want to be.

At the height of their popularity, they were extremely simple, durable, bomb-proof watches. They looked like nothing else and they were made in such small quantities (since the company was like three guys) that every one they made was special.

After that they waffled between making everything limited or full production, precious metals or not, crazy materials or not, simple movements or high complications, appeal to wristlets or fuck 'em.
Every time they made a decision they would change their mind a year later and the brand became further diluted.

It's probably the single most mismanaged brand in the watch world over the last few decades.

>> No.17869952

>>17869934
Blancpain has the exact same issue where the brand keeps releasing aspirational bullshit instead of what people are clamoring for. In Blancpain’s case people have been begging for a decently sized non-limited 50 Fathoms in steel for years. Instead they release a 50 Fathoms in a limited gold-bronze composite for $35k that looks like shit, but it’s smaller! It’s almost comical how out of touch a lot of the executives are.

If JLC survived their late 2000s/early 2010s period of atrocities, they are well and truly an unkillable brand.
IWC, on the other hand, is not in good shape. Their only notable watch, the Big Pilot, is now regarded as being too large for anyone to wear.
Their extremely late entry into the integrated sports watch segment is laughably overpriced.
I loved IWC for years and wore a Pilot Mark XII as my only watch for a while, but I don't feel good about where the brand is headed.

Fifty Fathoms is basically its own brand and it's frustrating as fuck. How hard is it to just build one to the specs of the 1950s original?
The rest of Blancpain is doing fine but the majority of watch people don't care about dressy watches and complications.

>IWC, on the other hand, is not in good shape. Their only notable watch, the Big Pilot, is now regarded as being too large for anyone to wear.
All Fliegeruhrs are notable watches of IWC
Then there's the Ingenieur line, the world famous Portugieser, which many regard as "the IWC", and the Aquatimer is picking up a lot of steam.
>Their extremely late entry into the integrated sports watch segment is laughably overpriced.
As far as Aquatimer yes. The Ingenieur as you know is a design from the 70s that was just poorly handled for a while. Their 2000s Ingenieurs are actually very good and reasonably priced. The new one is batshit crazy expensive though, granted.

IWCs new strategy is being more expensive (and thus more valuable) than Rolex. Believe it or not I've seen the new Ingenieur sell on Chrono24 at 12 to 13 thousand. Thousand. I don't know who buys them but they do. That's above Submariner prices and nearly double Milgauss.

So it's kind of working.

Yeah, the Fifty Fathoms is not a wristlet-friendly line of watches.
Blancpain still make a lot of watches at 40mm and under, but if you want complications, they seem to have settled on a 40mm case.

They still make some 38mm-cased complications like complete calendar or moonphase, but you have to wade through a sea of diamonds.

I agree with you on the 38mm FFB.

Your dream FF would be great, but it would still frustrate people because it would be sold for 15k plus. When those old FFs were being made, BP was not a luxury brand.

When JC Biver bought them, he turned them into a luxury brand by rebuilding them as an HH brand. The watchmakers by the 90s had more or less abandoned making complicated watches so Biver decided that the resurrected Blancpain would focus on high horology.
When they brought back the FF a couple years later, it had to be spec'ed in-line with what customers now expect of the bradn.

Got a new watch, this one’s pretty fun

>> No.17870220

Three years ago in November I made a note in my phone about my dream watch. Since then I've been obsessed with creating its design and functions. Man time flies. I changed the idea countless times but I think I get it now. It's a shame it can't be done with an off the shelf movement and Chinese parts. I don't think I will ever make it but I still dream about it. I don't even care about it being successful, just releasing it would fulfill my life's purpose. I think I will celebrate my anniversary with a new discounted shitter (pic unrelated). Sorry for the Reddit post haha

I have been into searching for a perfect Type I and II Seiko these days. I have been trying to find the most mint condition one with my preferred dial choice, but it's been hard. Same for a certain Seiko Advan with a faceted crystal with a green dial. But again they are hard to find in decent condition for the right price. Other than that, I weeb about vintage Casios and G-Shocks. I have a 1997 GT-000L that I snagged for literal pennies off some local online auction. I want to get a DW-3000 aka The Tank (pic rel), it's a watch that came out in 1985 boasts an insane 300WR and iirc is made out of titanium. Casio has been really based back in the day. So really hunting down weird vintage watches I guess.

He was having this issue before. Sent it for service (through AD spending about $1000) about 2 years ago. And it’s running behind again. He paid a realllly good price for it about 6 years ago before the prices skyrocketed so he can essentially double his money. a small addition about the Mirvaine thing: it was a brand name owned by different companies at different times, by 1973 it belonged to the La Chaux-de-Fonds company Ogival. one company could have acquired the other or they might have joined production during the crisis. it's also possible that Mirvaine went out of business and Framont acquired some ETA 2789 cases from their inventory.

I had the same problem.
The baby alpinist simply has a much better texture on the dial and it just wears better overall due to the smaller overall size, the bracelet is surprisingly good. Not presage level but definitely better than then other offerings from Seiko at that price point.
The Alpinist has raised lettering though which is simply amazing. And if you want to use it as a fidget thing, the lower crown is fun to play with. The crown guard also ads to the uniqueness of the look. Overall the Alpinist will remain timeless, but the texture on the b-alpinist dial was what did it for me.
I wear it daily, it's my favorite one.

Unfortunately no, Seiko modding will remain niche, and it's unfortunately a mindset thing that's being reinforced by American companies through Apple and their anti-right to repair bullshit.

The fact that alot of people gave Linus a pass when he deceitfully mentioned how the ROG Ally was better than the Deck because it was only "$50 more" than the Deck despite having better specs was because even if it was a blatant lie(Linus should've compared it to the $399 Dec) was because his supporters argue that MOST people who buy shit don't want to mod or open their products, even if they have the option to do so.
