/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - LATIGO HORSEHIDE EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them an

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

which i think is a bit of an illusion. these are only size 11
the removal of the external counter cover and the stitch along the eyelets makes the boot look much longer than it is
thats on the 602m though and it does look like they added some length to maybe keep the same tapering as the regular 602
either way the new boots just dont have that refined but hardy look of the old MIA boots

I don't wear boots because I am not a poor tradgie nor am I trying to look like one. I do wear loafers and derbies though
Who makes a clone of the Gucci loafers that is good? Gucci's are canvas lined which is unacceptable for their price point and I don't even believe they're Blake stitched anymore, pretty sure I saw a video of Bedos or T&H repairing one and it was cemented
I know Carmina does a very good one and leather lined but their last is different, not as sleek. Anyone else make a good alternative?

Most expensive boot I ever bought was the Alden Indy for 575 and even then I knew I was overpaying but I really loved the style so paid for it anyway
These boots are simply not worth it. Especially knowing that the designs and build haven't changed at all since they did cost 450 so you aren't get more or better for the money, you're just paying more

>> No.17866931

Veg tan leather does get dry out if they come into contact with water. It also can shrink under certain conditions.
This is why heel edge is waxed to prevent water penetration. You have to care for the heel and edge alongside with the upper. Just wax them regularly.
This is also why leather like JR (now Kilger) is superior. The tight tannage is water resistance. Most typical leather for heel and sole, like what the PNW guys are only made to be hard, not weather resistance.

materials wise it is more expensive and long term support to use pure leather like on the White's. The white's also uses a leather shank instead of the steel, leather will mold to your foot shape steel will not

I have to admit something.

I own a pair of Carmina black captoe oxfords and they are too small for my shoes.
It hurts a bit to wear them, but since I only wear them a few times a year I put up with it.

But the shoes being too small means they look fucking perfect. There is no excess leather, no weird creasing, the vamp doesn't collapse on my feet. It looks crisp as fuck.
So maybe ideal for this kind of shoe, as much as I hate to admit it.

>the laces are too short

i will keep the kilties in until they fall apart and then get a better pair, probably going to get new laces too. not sure what to do about the seam. i have a bandage covering the wear point now, but i don't think that will go away with wear. at least not quickly.

leather is a natural product, it has a grain direction like wood

leather uppers are cut with dies, with a machine that applies equal pressure and makes a clicking noise as it does

clickers are the leather cutters, they have to take into account the direction of the grain in the leather in order to get better flex and creasing characteristics

More often than not they will just put the metal stamps that have the various pattern pieces and put them over the leather and then under a big press and their only priority is to minimize the amount of wasted leather.

This goes for most of the let's say "budget" quality makers like Carmina etc.

For mass produced shoes (fashion brands etc) that at least use real leather they will actually put an entire stack of leathers under the press and cut the same patterns out of them from top to bottom. Most likely not a single human eyeball has seen the leathers in the stack before they are cut.

certain manufacturers like wolverine will absolutely maximize their use of the hides leading to a lot of horrific loose grain, creasing characteristics in their boots

>> No.17868830

>>17868814
It's a meme because people will say it to justify the price of very expensive boots, like people say Viberg throws away tons of leather to click properly.
But there's no real way to verify this, leather is weird, it creases good or badly based on leather thickness, foot shape, people buying wrong size shoes, or just "it is what it is".

I own a pair of Carmina oxfords in black boxcalf and I''ve seen vids of Carmina factory workers and it's just 20 or so grandmas trying to get as many shoe pieces as possible out of the leather. But the shoes crease excellently because they are too small for me so the vamp is always taut.

Unless you go bespoke I don't think it's possible to have the right shoe size and not end up with some excess leather somewhere.

For me I have wide feet but the outside of my foot tapers down a lot so there's always a gap there in the vamp.
I've seen a photo of a bespoke G&G oxford and it had a super aggressive taper towards the sides so I guess that's what it takes (like $6,000? idk)
