what tips do you guys have to soften up a pair of raw denim that feels exceptionally stiff? i was gifted my second pair of raw denim and this is way more rigid than my first pair, despite being almost the same weight. is it just a naked and famous thing to be so stiff out the box?

I pick a couple times throughout the day to do squats in them so that I'm applying a lot of tension in the thigh, knee, and ass region. I have a home gym and I'll also literally wear my jeans while lifting weights. Also go for daily walks. Essentially the ingredient for breaking in jeans is movement, heat, friction, and tension. Obviously don't try to apply a fuck ton on tension in the crotch area as this part is way more susceptible to early blowouts.

All denim is woven differently. Even two different pairs of 21 oz will feel very different. Just trust the break in process, and dont refrain from washing your jeans regularly (every 2 weeks or so) if you wear them a lot

>> No.17862073

the stiffness is all the starch. some brands use a lot some don't use much. your three options:
- just wear them and they soften up in a month ish
- soak them for an hour in the bathtub in cold or hot water both have slightly different results
- or you could wash them and turn them into a 1wash pair
personally i cold soak all my denim when i get it if its really starchy like that.. i wear it raw if its not so starchy or if i really want sharp crisp fades, and i hot soak or wash if i want to shrink them remove some dye or soften them up more.
air drying recommended, tumble drying can soften them up more at small risk of fucking the fades up minorly or majorly.

yeah whenever you get really heavy or starchy jeans just wear them around the house and do stretches/calisthenics/yoga in them till they become wearable.

the rope dyed natural indigo ones will fade super well. they'll start off that lighter shade of indigo and contrast all the way to white and fade fast. if you want even more contrast you could look for something with a darker natural indigo as a starting point but i like that lighter shade for 70s jeans.
if you don't want them to contrast all the way to white you could also look for a hank dyed pair. the main difference is the thread gets dyed deeper.
here's an example of rope dyed natural indigo vs hank dyed natural indigo

Just made this pair out of a bunch of raggedy old denim I had from a few pairs of my torn up work pants, they are all worn in because of that. If you have trouble with jeans fitting properly you should really take a bit to learn to sew them up, its worth it, ive sewn so many pairs and they always end up fitting so much nicer than getting them from the store. Levi's, Wrangler, etc all do L29, L28 and I think even smaller. Just not as commonly stocked by stores. Most serious jeans brands actually tend to come in 1 length and its expected that you tailor them, but a few brands like Edwin are cool and will give you a union special hem at any length right from the factory. Its because retailers and importers don't like stocking 10x as many sizes for $300+ items.
But yes most pants aren't sold below L30. I have a pet theory that this plays a major role in why most other manlets are bitter virgins like shortkings on youtube or all the manlets i see posting on 4chan. If you're a manlet its basic mandatory knowledge as an adult to know that you need to get all of your clothes tailored. 99% of manlets I see on the streets dress like shit with ill fitting clothes. I think there's some connection between that and them being depressed virgins, I never had that problem. When you're short its very easy to look like a boy/child and ill fitting clothes is one of many fast tracks to looking like a boy.

i just diluted it in a hot bath tub and soaked my jeans in it. i used somewhere in between the amount of bleach i've seen denimbros and n&f suggest using and the amount of bleach i see women in tiktok using to turn jeans white. something like 10% of the bottle diluted into 5" of bathtub water.
it lightened the jeans up slightly and really brought the indigo color out. immediate compliments on first wear, which is unusual for my raws.
throwing a bit of bleach in the wash more like the method n&f guys talk about along with honest wear might be my new meta for pairs of jeans i'm going for that low contrast vintage look on.

not washing produces high contrast denimbro looking fades.
washing produces low contrast vintage looking fades.
"don't wash ever" is just people taking it too far. if you want high contrast fades you just want to push off the initial wash, after that you can treat them like normal jeans.

>do they cut the original hem and resew it
you can get that kind of hem done but i would not recommend doing so on nice jeans unless they're prefaded/distressed.
>>17873611
nah most tailors can give you a lockstitch hem. it'll look and fade a bit different but its arguably stronger than a chainstitch and there's nothing wrong about doing it. see: wrangler jeans for an example of jeans we all like that come with a lockstitched hem.
non chainstitch hem won't have that yellow chainstitch line on the inside (it looks the same on the outside) and you won't get as much of that twisting 'roping' effect you see strongly on picrel. it'll be more uniform and vertical.
nothing wrong with doing it either way.

I got a Speed Queen washing machine (the top-loading kind with the agitator in the middle). It looks like none of the presets have the option to disable the spin cycle, though some have "intermittent low speed" spin cycles. Wish I'd checked beforehand, but it's what I've got now.

yeah
if you have a long legs short torso body type it makes it worse.
your first pair of high rises sizes different than most jeans you've worn, easy to fuck up the first time if buying online or no real world measurements (tag sizes lie ofc)
if you have any kind of gut it can be hard to size for or uncomfortable.
the shorter the jeans are the less variance in how the upper block is shaped/cut will affect if the jeans fit you well or not. paticularly how the waist fits (some high rises taper in some flare out and some are straight at the waist)
the taller the upper block is the more if it fits or not depends on the combination of your hip/waist shape
bit less comfortable to sit in.
mid rise tends to do the best job of keeping your twig&berries not visible when sittting.
suspenders and even belts gradually fell out of favor direct correlation to wearing jeans off the hip instead of waist.
those are all potential downsides though if you have a slim or straight waist/gut area and/or access to somewhere with a lot of jeans to try on most of them don't apply.
that being said high rise > mid > low for me.

>> No.17878809

>if you have a long legs short torso body type it makes it worse.
if your shirt is tucked or you're wearing a 'proper' length untucked shirt doesn't apply if you wear long line or boxy shit
>if you have any kind of gut it can be hard to size for or uncomfortable.
avoidable if you size right and stick to the patterns that flare at the waist see: levis 1933 pattern

most thrift stores wash them when they come in. i don't usually wash denim from the thrift unless its a smaller non chain store that might not have washed it.
i just bought a pair of raw wranglers then washed them before i wore them the other day:
if they feel starchy and cardboardy then they have never been washed. if they're not necessarily soft feeling but not stiff feeling they've been washed once.
anyways its no big deal if they got washed or if you wash them again. raw, rinsed, 1 wash, or 2 wash are all pretty good starting points for a pair of jeans. it really just depends if you want them to be soft and broken in feeling right away or if you want higher contrast crispier looking fades. a looser fit like that is gonna wind up with low contrast vintagey looking fades anyways so i don't see any big deal if you decide to wash em even if they were already washed. just do it on cold inside out you won't lose much dye just starch which wranglers dont have a ton of to begin with when fully raw.
also hard to tell from pic but you might be wearing them a bit low, wranglers you wanna wear at your actual waist right under your belly button higher up than most jeans.

as one of the first english speaking people who got on the osaka 5 raw denim revival thing around y2k:
really no right or wrong answer to washing.
the not washing your jeans thing is good advice if you want those Temple of JawnzzzZZz sIcK fAdEs BrO looking jeans as the end result. you also need a tight fit in the upper block and thigh (the rest doesn't matter) for that kind of fade to occur.
but you don't need to do that to get those kinds of fades.
all the guys who work at n&f wash their jeans monthly/30 wears and get great fades as retail workers, some of them even put bleach in the machine and tumble dry, so you obviously don't have to.
nor is there any reason you're obligated to even want them. low contrast fades are great too. if you want vintage looking fades you actually WANT TO wash the jeans frequently to accomplish them.
tl;dr
there's no right or wrong way to do it unless you're going for a specific end result, which is kind of wack to me as a mentality and counter to the whole idea of jeans that reflect your authentic wear/lifetstyle. just do sandpaper fades at that point (yes they can look very good done well)

yall weren't lying about bravestar, got two pair of the true straight, one in 12 oz jap selvidge the other in 13 oz cone mills southern comfort and the rise is like an inch or more different between the two
one fits decent, the other like perfect. why

N&F can have pretty big variances in their cuts between different fabric types as well

>> No.17883084

>>17882924
Southern comfort has elastic in it, so if that is the one that fits best, it's probably just cause of that.

it's not that, and honestly the jap selvedge seems a touch stretchy as well
the jap ones def fit better because of the higher rise and theyre straight up larger in the waist i just noticed as well
lemme snap some photos

Hard to tell but it’s like a full inch higher ride than the cone mills

They both fit well enough, would be nice if they both fit as well as the jap ones tho

Idk what to say, could be that they were made at different factories in Los Angeles.

looks fine
>where should they end?
right where you have it (slight break)
slightly shorter (clean break)
or slightly longer (light stacking don't go past 2ish stacks with skinny jeans)
and base it off the kind of footwear you'll wear them in the most. it'll sit a bit different on everything. ex: if its boots figure out your inseam wearing boots. if its sneakers wear sneakers. if its sandals just do it barefoot. etc.

this.
all the brands that are mass produced just tend to have more variance in exact measurements run to run. might be intentional to slightly tweak how each fabric drapes/fits. i don't really think its a qc thing because qc on everything else with all those brands tends to be really good. disclaimer: never bought anything from brave star.

beaut
i keep going back and forth on my next denim jacket being a chore coat or a type 2

the height thing is overblown online. women don't really care and i have 72" reach so fighting tall guys is like batting left handed. i get a lot of knockouts and i've never been knocked out.

they started off as black raw but there wasn't much starch in them. been washed probably 10-20 times so they only have vintage low contrast fades.
i think the fit's why they get me so many compliments. rustlers fit a bit snugger in the upper block than cowboy cuts and it just works really good on my body.
