The service intervals-question.
Depending on who you ask, you getva different answer. Friend of mine had his yachtmaster II serviced once after 10+ years because he was dailying it and went with it to the beach too, it cost him 800$ because they had to polish and clean it too. So I guess a more expensive watch in that range would cost you around 50$ per year for maintenance. If it doesn't bother you that your watch loses 45 seconds a day (after 5-10 years) then you won't care servicing it.

Co-axial can be serviced by independent watchmakers who have the training in that specific escapement, but I wouldn't take one to an independent who wasn't. That's the cheapest solution (i.e. around 250-400 USD). The only alternative is to take it to Omega themselves, and they have their servicing costs posted on their website (it might vary regionally, so check). As for how often: if you wear the watch daily (and I do mean daily), then every 7-10 years OR when you find the performance of the watch suddenly changes. You have to think of servicing costs as 'the price of entry'; it comes with owning and using the watch, and there's no getting away from it.

A normal person can simply add one to yesterday's date.
If you're just a regular, garden-variety simpleton, you can check your phone or something once in the morning and you know the date for the rest of the day.
But if you need to repeatedly check what the date is over the course of a day, you have to be colossally brain-damaged.

There was an issue with one of the pinions causing excessive wear in the hole that it goes through on the mainplate; this would cause the movement to stop when the chronograph was started; many first-gen owners complained about this, including people who got the gold/gold reissue. Apparently Omega identified the issue and rectified it, so now it's a rare (or 'fixed') issue. Unlike the 3xxx movements of Rolex, of course. The only downside that I can see about owning one is what I mentioned above regarding servicing a co-axial. ANY co-axial needs to be serviced by Omega or an independent who has had the training. This restricts who can help you, and increases the cost. That's one of the reasons I don't want to own one. The other reason is a simple one that my watchmaker informed me about; due to the silicon hairspring, if there is any damage to the hairspring, it must be replaced. You can't shape a silicon hairspring; it is formed as a 'perfect' piece, and if there's damage, you can't repair it. Watchmakers hate stuff like that, because in the long run it becomes a disposable part.

I have concerns about the 3861 aesthetic choices, but that's my own concern. In terms of performance, they are superior to the older Speedies by every important metric, so if it's your first Speedy, I can't see a reason not to get one. Go second-hand though, so you can get a better price.

>>17855436

It's called a 'Swiss Timer', and it was made for a short period in the 90s; 2 colours (red/black), and two clocks (roman numerals and arabic). It has the tools of a swiss champ minus the tweezers (due to the lack of space on the front plastic cover), and was for a time the most complicated one they produced. Mine came in the Deluxe SOS pouch. I'll try to get a shot or two soon with some watches. The SAK has served me for decades, and is a good friend...lol

Eventually Victorinox did the digital thing, and even added a lighter. Fun stuff.

>>17855450
Gotcha, senpai. Happy to help. I also forgot to mention; the original 3861 came with the normal new bracelet, but eventually they put it on the one that had micro-adjustments on the slide, so new ones from an AD will have the adjustable bracelet, but there is no guarantee an old grey-market one will have that, so make sure to look for it when you start searching.

That said, though, even used values are too high these days.
You'd have to be an asshole to spend more than a thousand dollars for any of their old, poorly finished ETA/Valjoux shitters. As for the cuckaxial stuff, just avoid it. It's a failure that Omega is sticking with as a marketing exercise, since Rolex has completely pushed their shit in by now.

Not really. Through the 1950s and even into the 1960s, Rolex and Omega were pretty neck-and-neck, but after the Quartz Crisis, Swatch bough them and they started cranking out budget shitters and that was the end of that. No one will ever again take Omega as seriously as Rolex. (Not that anyone takes Omega seriously at all, to be fair.)

The only exceptions are those coping holdouts cowering and mumbling shit about going to to the moon or James Bond, but they don't count as men, so they don't have valid opinions.

As for the 8500 movements, those are still made by ETA. Swatch makes the choice to only put them in Omegas, but they're still ETA movements.

Oh, well, in that timeframe, Omega has never been a respected brand and has in no way, shape, or form been at all on par with Rolex.
You don't have to go further back than the 2010s when you could get Seamasters and Speedmasters all day for under 1000-1500 USD. (Inflation and watch-hype have raised prices some.) Over that span no Submariners or Daytonas have been available for under 5000USD.

Yes they do, unfortunately. Most times it doesn’t have any effect on me EXCEPT when someone senior to me (I’m military) notices my Rolex while he or she is either wearing a $25 Timex / Casio or several hundred dollar smartwatch. Then I see some sort of look on their face that is annoyance or something pithy. If I weren't as humble as I am, I would find it amusing.

You’ll find yourself defending it occasionally “my $100 G Shock keeps better time than your Rolex” or “all I need is this Citizen, it’s good enough for me”. In those moments I just oblige whatever it is they’re saying, it’s an untenable position because they are coming from a place of inferiority. You’re an ass for wearing something, to them, that doesn’t have real value, and nothing will make them understand that they could have had the same thing if they didn't have to pay child support or if they didn't sell their inherited house and move to the big city or whatever. So buy and wear what you love. It’s your wrist. I stopped really caring what people think after high school, pity not everyone else feels the same.

If you play a sport that's not popular, you can at least feel good about yourself when you get better at that sport, but you can never get "better" at watches. You just buy more or get into boring "debates" about lift angle and mainspring torque with similarly self-loathing people.

If anything you should have at least one vintage Omega in your collection alongside a Rolex of your choice. Seems to me you're buying into a shitty brand-loyal teamsport battle which is excessively childish, but I shouldn't expect much from this thread.

mogged? lolno.
They were slightly closer in quality, but Rolex was always the superior watch. Rolex was already the bigger company by the 60s and was more effective at developing technology.

Consider the first Submariner vs Seamaster 300. The Submariner had a screwdown crown and was water-resistant to 200m. The Seamaster instead had a system (Naiad) where water pressure would work to seal the case. It worked at deep pressures but at low pressures, where people swim, it leaked like a motherfucker, kek. By the way, they called it the 300 not because it had 300m of water resistance, they just put a bigger number on the dial to try and fool customers.

The first iterations of the Sub were laughably terrible for water resistance, despite the screw down crown. The gaskets they used were dogshit. Having said that, so were Omega's offerings at the time. They didn't start coming into their own until the late 1960s, and overall Rolex was the better offering.

Probably even those.
Certain parts are simply easier/cheaper to manufacture in China and finish in Switzerland.

Cases, crystals, gaskets, bracelet parts, etc.
For example, you get a factory in Guangzhou to bang out a million Speedmaster cases and ship them to Switzerland. If you polish them up in Switzerland, you just need buy to have a buffing wheel, not an entire foundry and machine shop. (This is obviously an over-simplification, but you get the idea.)

Swatch leverages its size across all its brands.
ETA makes movements for Longines, Tissot, Hamilton, Omega, all in the same factory.
Cases, dials, hands, are all made in their own factories. Even final assembly is done in a unified fashion across multiple brands. That's why Swatch never offers tours of their factory like, say, Rolex or JLC do. That would allow anyone to see they don't make their own watches.

Yes, but unless it's some fragile, vintage, ultra-thin watch, it'll be fine handling a weekly plinking session at the sand pit. Most watches, especially modern ones, are much tougher than people think. People whine about them being fragile because they treat their watches as an investment that they want to keep in mint condidion.

I think what's a little trickier is when you're talking about a company like JLC. JLC makes everything in-house, cases, movements, etc. For their quartz models they even make their own quartz movements. However, they are owned by Richemont, another luxo holding company. Richemont more or less lets JLC do whatever they want and doesn't insist they start using ValFleurier movements like Panerai, IWC, and others use, but neither is JLC truly independent anymore.

>Any redpills about Zenith?
Great brand, in and of itself, but like >>17855679 mentioned with JLC, they're not independent. Owned by LVMH.

Zenith is a brand that never quite seems to know what it's doing. It will create a great design, then discontinue it, seemingly without checking if it's popular or not. They'll produce some absolute howlers. (Look up anything from the Thierry Nataf era, picrel.) They have no consistent design language across the brand.
They also get criticized for being overly dependent on the El Primero. Every watch they make now, it seems is powered by some variant of it.
However, when they do get it right, it's a great watch. And, better still, when they do a reissue, they resist the temptation to make it 44mm across or 20mm thick. They will simply remake the old watch with new technology.

Pricing is laughable, but they all depreciate horrifically, so you can get a safe queen for half-price pretty easily.

For me, the Chronomaster Original 38mm. It's THE Zenith watch, in the same way that the Tank is THE Cartier or the Sub is THE Rolex. The design is basically unchanged from the 1960s.
38mm across, 12.6mm thick (which is thin for an automatic chronograph) They make it in other colors, strap or bracelet, but the three-color subdials is classically and uniquely Zenith.

The problem with Credor is that their model range is all over the place.
You can find shitty little quartz Credors for a couple hundred and also the Eichi II, which...god only knows what you have to pay to get one, I think they're by special order only now.

I don't think it's supposed to be the top-of-the-range brand within Seiko. I don't think Seiko even is organized that way. I think it's just like a more elegant, feminine equivalent to Grand Seiko.

>> No.17855993

Yeah it's a weird brand stuck between being maybe above grand seiko or having 100$ quartz watches.
The EICHI II costs around 45K and their most complex work yet is actually a Sonnerie named Credod Sonnerie Spring drive. Like the name suggests, it combines a spring drive with a sonnerie (grand) compication. It's as weird as it sounds. That one costs around 750K.
They need to decide what to do with that brand. If they bring it overseas, they have to take it up market but that can't happen because of the aforementioned problem with the brands image and its 100$ watches as an entry to the brand. Granted they are very ugly quartz watches but still.

I've wanted an analog digital pro-trek for a long while. Thinking about getting one of these, a prw-61y, but the mineral crystal on such a "rugged" watch is kind of holding me back. Does anybody know of a similar model with a sapphire crystal?

I don't think there's any plans to fully go international with Credor. Japanese companies truly only care about the domestic market. Grand Seiko was only exported because the number of weebs begging for them made it an irresistible prospect.

If you look at their domestic catalog, you can begin to see how Grand Seiko and Credor are positioned.
Grand Seiko is basically a Rolex-equivalent. That's pretty obvious.
Credor appears to be a Seiko analog to Cartier/Piaget/Chopard. Jewelry-watches foremost but also with some high horology pieces.

I would ditch SBGA211 compared to the other two, it's mid at best. The choice IMO, the choice is between SBGY007 and SBGY011.
I personally would go for SBGY007 if you can find it.

Never wore a watch in my life, I got some good fits but they always seem incomplete. Recently I started noticing how many guys wear watches and it actually makes em look more... mature?

So /Fa/ any recommendations for watches/ accessories that don't go above 50-100 euros and suit multiple outfit with different colors? Any advise would be appreciated.
