Something weird happened to me that made me regret a impulse buy. It's about a Nomos Tangente Datum 38mm that I got a few weeks ago.
And that's something that no reviewer mentioned, in fact, there are only handful of old forum posts here and there about this very real issue. The watch is Loud. You can hear the ticking from a meter away and no, that's not a joke. I even took the watch back to ask if it is broken because, even while driving, you hear it loud and clear and that starts getting annoying real quick.
I am surprised at how, again, nobody mentioned something that's so detrimental about a watch.
Just something to keep in mind. Open back Nomos' are loud af, to the point where I am probably going to sell it, no matter how pretty it is.

There is a man in a cave out there, pacing back and forth, learning how to tell time by the alignment of the stars, moon and sun.
One day you two will meet. Your quartz battery will have ran out. Your automatic analog will have broken down and stopped running. He will be able to tactically tell time and make the sound tactical moves to out smart you and outflank your position and eliminate you.

It's a Swatch Group subsidiary, so some watch snobs will automatically dislike them for that association (Personally I think it's a stupid reason to dislike them). But for a watch in that price range you aren't going to find many independent in-house Swiss watch manufacturers. I think they make some pretty nice designs and have a strong enough brand equity that you can find someone interested in buying it from you if you want to sell it later on. Some more unknown microbrands can be very hard to sell. It might not hold it's value quite as much as other luxury brands or appreciate in value like a Rolex, but if resale isn't much of a priority for you that isn't a big deal. Another advantage Longines have from an affordability standpoint is that the ETA based movements that they use are cheap and relatively easy to service, unlike in-house movements from other entry-level luxury watch brands like Tudor or Omega which can be expensive and annoying to service. Overall I think they are a pretty solid choice for an affordable nice watch.

No problem. You can't just walk into a Rolex store and buy a watch BTW. You have to "establish a relationship" with the dealer and put your name down on a waitlist. If they think you're worthy they'll call you later and offer you a watch to buy.

The upper echelon of expensive watches are basically status symbols for the most wealthy people who often have more money than taste. The people who are willing to spend well over 6 figures for a watch aren't typically watch enthusiasts, they are just flexing their wealth. There are exceptions of course. The funny thing is 50 years from now most of those type of watches are going to crumble in value because they will be impossible to sell, especially if they have any mechanical issues. They are basically vulgar flashy displays of wealth, in the same category of shiny Bugatti's and large yachts. They are for the elite of the elite 0.001%

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate billionaires and I think we should have nice things to aspire to, but I think watches in those crazy high price ranges are a bit silly.

Because they deliberately under-produce watches, if they sold indiscriminately they would be always sold out. Therefore they pick and choose who they want to sell to, and try to reward loyal customers and avoid selling to flippers. It's part of their strategy of keeping rolex desirable and not just 'meh' feeling like omega. By making it hard to get it's more appealing.

I'm no expert but UV exposure is going to have a different effect on different watches based on the materials used. If you look at antique watches you can often notice fading in the dials, but that is after decades of wear. Also I believe modern materials are a lot less prone to discoloration from exposure to sunlight. For example older lume would yellow over time, but modern watch loom is much more stable and doesn't yellow. A lot of modern watches even use yellow tinted lume to mimic the look of vintage watches because the modern lume doesn't age the same way.

TLDR it will be fine, you shouldn't notice any fading, it might change over the course of decades of daily wear but it's not like you have to worry about hiding from the sun to protect it

While Nomos mechanical movements may be commendable, they are unable to compensate for the abysmal design. The abhorrent aesthetic of their timepieces betray a lack of ingenuity and a pervading lack of artistry. Nomos' designs could be described as grim, joyless and uninspired - a hideous marriage of utilitarianism and lackluster aesthetics. Ultimately, while their watches may function adequately, those seeking an exquisitely designed timepiece should look elsewhere.

Kinda want a traditional style casual but still very attractive daily watch. I'd like a sapphire crystal and a day/date but I don't recall seeing a traditional 6 oclock seconds hand with a day date so that complication probably isn't necessary but may be something for me to consider.

Mostly hoping to see some slightly unusual stuff from the bargain bin under $200 if you guys knew of any. $1000 watches are neat and all, I just don't want to spend that kind of money right now.

That's the norm and you only have to pay retail for in-demand pieces with limited numbers. I'll never forget the retard over at WUS trying to figure out if it was a limited release when nothing pointed to that so they can speculate on the price and make a profit. I really wish I egged them on so they wasted their money. I don't even hate scalpers for products designed for scalping but basing your purchase on expected profit is pure poison.
