I finally bought my first "real" watch after getting tired of my stale Shitbit. It's a Citizen Classic (quartz, 40 mm) that I got on Labor Day sale for $160 (with tax & free shipping). I bought a brown Alligator embossed calf leather strap (arriving soon) because I really want brown instead of black.

I just couldn't justify buying a >$1,000 mechanical for my first "real" watch, plus I commute in a big, dangerous city with "criminals" on the subway. So, I'll wear this daily (Fitbit still for weekends and exercise) and see what I like/dislike before I buy an expensive watch.

All the /wt/ I read in the past month were all helpful. So you---yes, YOU---deserve a big thank you.

Nah they're making too many of them.
Predditors go on about much "value" the original SARB and Cocktail Time watches were and how much it sucks that they went out of production; but the reason they're still scoring high prices on the second hand market is only BECAUSE they had such a limited run and they were JDM only.

With the new Presage and Prospex lines Seiko upped production hundredfold so they'll never be rare or a novelty. In addition their prices are ridiculously high for their specs, again because the original ones were so in demand, not because the new ones are. Hence there'll be a lot of supply for a long time keeping the second hand prices significantly below retail.
Like another anon said, you can be happy if you find someone to buy it at all.

Nah they won’t. Only a few watches get more valuable as years go on

>any Rolex
If it’s in good condition, it can retain its value. If it’s pristine, it will go up in price, especially rare models
>certain Omegas
The OG Moonwatch and the “Prince William/Pierce Brosnan” Seamaster (1993 quartz) have gone up in price. Some 1980s LCD and digital Omegas too
>Casio
Rare modes and OG models like the original G-Shock and certain collaborations can easily sell for $1,000+
>Seikos
Only rare 1960-1990s Seikos have risen in price partly through them being associated with certain actors and movies (Arnie, Aliens, Bruce Lee, Apocalypse Now, etc). and because of rich collectors who like the nicknaming “Gotta Catch em All” aspect (Samurai, UFO, Monster, Pogue, etc)
>any of the big 3 and other handmade luxury timepieces like Breguet
Pretty much these never go out style and there’s always rich collectors eyeballing these rare pieces
>Vostok and other Russian models
Some old USSR cosmonaut Cold War timepieces, but for obvious reasons being you’ll never see these made again
>rare movements
To stay alive during the Quartz Crisis some movemeny makers were stuffing excess supply of high end movements stuffed into “cheaper” watches (Zenith) or some legendary movements like Minerva no longer existing (technically they’re now inside of Montblanc and Citizen)
>OG watches
The first of everything will always be rare and in demand
>Not well known makers designing for more well known
Some early Squales for example will sell for a lot, due to them making the casing for Rolex in the 60s

Does this watch look particularly feminine? I want to get a 34mm chronometer for less than 5k, and I don’t want to the watch to scream that it’s a women’s watch. Just goin for an undersized look. Any suggestions for other watches that might work?

According to the rolex website configurator they do datejusts in 3-mm, 36mm and 41mm. The lady datejust is considered a separate product and only comes in 28mm. It's kind of odd to me they don't just roll the lady datejust in with the rest of the datejusts.

For most generations they have the same movements, but in the late 70s, they had different movements. Then, the DJ had a quickset date and the OPD didn't. But for most years, they have the same movement. (When a new movement was introduced, the DJ got it first.)

OPD were always 34mm, DJ is traditionally 36mm.
OPD has a 19mm bracelet, DJ has a 20mm
OPD is generally less flashy, with fewer polished elements in the bracelet and less gold (but, of course, there were many variants over the years. Both watches were made for decades.)

In the last thread I was trying to decide between Sinn and Damasko which as a really good scratch resistant harden metal case but decided to go with Sinn for the overall design+construction.

Now, I'm trying to choose between Marathon and Sinn.

>Sinn 857 / 43mm
>Marathon Diver (GSAR) Anthracite / 41mm

On their website Marathon says they have a Ion-Plating (IP) armour on their case but I'm pretty sure its just marketing. Still a nice watch tho. In the end, picrel watches looks sturdy enough for my needs.

I want a watch that I can wear at work and won't have to babysit it, something that I can bang on things and wont cry about it. basically, I think the term is imbecile but I'm looking for what they call a ''tool'' watch.

What would you guys choose here? If both sucks, is there a better Sinn/Marathon model I should be looking for?

Maybe I'm retarded but I don't understand why one would bother settling for an OP when an Explorer or Datejust is only relatively little more and way more iconic, desirable and interesting watches. If you're already spending that much for a watch you may as well go ham and save up a little more for something really good.

Well, the OP is better looking than the Explorer and is otherwise functionally identical. The only thing the Explorer has over the OP is _slightly_ better lume (which isn't saying much because Rolex lume actually sucks across the board. It's like the one thing they do badly.)

The Datejust is a different story. It's a little more flashy, depending on the bracelet and bezel, and some people just despise the Cyclops with a passion.

The lume? Yes, compared to Seiko's LumiBright and the industry standard Super-LumiNova, Rolex's Chromalight does not glow as brightly or last as long. (And that's taking into account that blue light-emitting lume does not perform as well as green. Super-LumiNova BGW9 is nearly as good as C3, which made the old Seamasters have such great lume.)

Maybe it's the specific chemical composition, maybe it's simply that they don't apply it thickly enough.

It simplifies things a bit.

People who can't read roman numerals probably would just not buy a watch with roman numerals on it. They look kind of gaudy anyway, I don't know why so many still make watches with roman numerals.

>> No.17798971

>>17798948
Yeah but not fixing it is even easier because it's clearly not hurting Rolex's sales, lume is a meme anyway and isn't as good as electroluminescence, an LED or your phone screen, if you're gonna need a watch frequently in the dark then again you'll need a REAL tool watch, a G-Shock.

I wear watches pretty much everywhere except in the shower, even in bed, so I go crazy over lume. It doesn't really work if you haven't been outside all day because then it doesn't have the juice to get through the night, but if you've been doing some yard work or whatever you're in for a good night of knowing what time it is.

This. The number of divers who have been put in dangerous situations because of Rolex's poor lume is zero.

Plus, it's incredibly rare to be in a situation where you *need* to know the time in the dark and truly have no artificial light sources.

Well the lume starts depleting itself as soon as it *starts* getting dark, so by the time it's actually so dark you can't see the watch dial the lume has already dimmed, the only reason you can maybe see the lume after waking up in the middle of the night is because the residual lume is the only light source and your eyes are super sensitive to light after having your eyes closed for hours
