Gently reminder that chypre fragrances smell like makeup

>But the name "chypre" (chypvra etc), apart from any geographical connotations, had travelled in aromatic stanzas throughout the Middle Ages, Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment thanks to the vigorous commerce of the enterprising Cypriots who dabbled in a feminine product with an added scent: their famous "Cipria" powder, a cosmetic face powder -presented by various different local "houses"- which was further aromatized with the cypriot aromatic blends they had excelled at for centuries (And which, by all accounts, judging by the later specimens circulating into the 20th century, smelled not far off what we consider a chypre fragrance today!)

Any recs on actual perfumes with a similar composition, only stronger and longer lasting?
Or is it only because I have the eau de toilette version? Is it really that much of difference in comparison to actual perfume?

For me it's way too warm and spicy, it also smells old, not 'rugged and mature' old, but old as in grampa who is about to pass away kinda old.

If they don't want to sell it, they can just say it. Having only one or two stores in Germany that stock it would be stupid, since Germany is highly decentralized (especially in the West). If I look it up, they have one store in Berlin and one in Munich which might stock it, somehow failing to realize that the highest GRP as well as the highest population is in the West German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Overall, not my problem. I test other stuff instead, so I buy other stuff instead. Both Chanel and Dior have a store here in my city, with Les Exclusifs and the Prive Line being available.

this is a very good aquatic frag, nothing more and nothing less - the name (salt water) is very fitting
summer/spring frag, not too versatile imo, performance is very good, less complicated but more focused/better blended than Tauer Pthaloblue (which has a similar concept imo)

What do you guys think about this post by Manuel Cross from rogue?

>Here’s the scoop:
Although I am using heavily regulated materials, after dilution in alcohol my fragrances interestingly fall right within regulation. I began sending samples of my frags to an independent lab and found that out. I was then able to obtain proper SDS forms to be able to ship to retailers overseas.
>I had a feeling that would be so which is partly the reason I had the frags tested, I wanted to confirm my suspicions. The results are not entirely dumb luck however; I rash up quite easily with Lyral, Lilial and bergamot so I had been formulating with lower amounts and supporting with other skin-friendly materials to achieve the effects I sought.

>To be honest I was quite ignorant going into this whole thing; thinking these materials were banned completely, hence the whole “non-IFRA”touting. This is why I dropped that motto a few years back. It just seemed irresponsible and infantile.

>Since finding out the lab results I’ve been theorizing that many of the classics are being gutted not so much due to regulations but to suit the current tastes of the wider market. If a little guy like me can achieve vintage-like effects within regulation what’s to stop the big companies who have all the resources and captive materials?

I really feel like a lot of shit just gets reformulated in order to sell stuff with better performance at a higher price. There's a clear divide appearing, in which cheapies aren't allowed to last and the greatest performance can only be had in the fragrances with the highest price. The IFRA is just an easy target. I'd still blame the houses for their bullshit. There are also some very common "notes" going around right now, I'd assume they are cheap raw materials so they get recycled into as many fragrance releases as possible at the moment. In the end it's all about maximizing margins and purely about profit.

I liked Oajan when I smelled it at a store, and then I bought a sample. The performance of the sample was abysmal and it was a renowned sampling website, so I knew that whatever performance it used to have has died with the reformulation PdM did to all their frags (one of the few edge cases where the reformulation was obvious due to changed ingredient lists and alcohol content). Also, as is par de course for PdM, it's just a clone of Ambre Narguile from Hermes, with the difference that Ambre Narguile is impossible to come by for most people. Luckily the Hermes store in my city stocked it and I almost bought it, but I then considered how often I would actually wear it and I found myself not wearing vanilla-heavy stuff that often.

You don't ask in a perfume store. Simple as. The salespeople have zero clue about fragrances and just need to sell stuff. They will offer you the current trends and you will inevitably like one of them. My suggestion is going there when it's the busiest and hit them with the "just browsing", then sniffing a bunch of stuff.
Cheap fragrances have notes just to advertise them. Mexx Black doesn't really smell like cedar, lily, sandalwood and patchouli, but it sounds nice on the box. I used to have the regular Mexx Man back in the days, which calls itself a fougere and I know now that it simply doesn't fit its description.

I had Mexx Man, not Mexx Black. It smelled like a fresh and ever so slightly sweet fragrance. These types of fragrance are a weird concept best described by accords, not by notes. Once you smell different fragrances of higher quality (than drug store), or even raw materials, notes will become clearer and more distinguishable and you will realize that this type of fragrance doesn't really care about individual notes. Other than that, it's impossible for me to describe something you can smell, in the same it is hard to describe something you can taste. What would you describe the taste of steak like other than like the taste of steak?
If you hate interacting with people, don't interact with them. Like I said, my "just browsing" has always done the trick. If this interaction already overwhelms you, you don't need a fragrance. My best suggestion based on the description of Mexx Black would be that half of the masculine store selection of so called "freshies" could be similar to it. This is why I repeat my actual suggestion, that is going to the store to sniff stuff.

This seems like such a basic topic, but at the same time it’s nothing I’ve ever really discussed in depth before.

One of the general fragrance suggestions is to wear an odorless deodorant. In my understanding there are antiperspirants and deodorants. Antiperspirants (are supposed to) stop you from sweating, deodorants just cover up the smell of the sweat with some other scent.

I stopped wearing antiperspirants years ago because they don’t work for shit and just slowly ruined the armpits of all my shirts, now I strictly use deodorant.

So my question is, is my understanding of a deodorant incorrect? An unscented antiperspirant I can get, it’s the part that stops you from sweating without any fragrance, but isn’t a deodorant by definition a fragrance spray or gel applied to the underarms to cover up the natural smell of sweat?

What is a good all-around cologne that doesn't make me smell like an old man?

>> No.17778747

>>17778737
Deodorants deodorize, not reodorize. The odor isn't caused by sweat, it's produced by metabolic products of the bacteria on your skin. Deodorants will either kill or disturb these bacteria, ideally enough to stop them from doing their thing and producing a scent. Deodorants can also contain compounds which chemically "capture" the metabolic products in order to not let them evaporate. That way you also won't smell.

AdS smells like myrtle and the sea, somewhat briny and somewhat like seaweed, and a bit of ozone.
The bad is that it's quite sharp, costly, and it doesn't change significantly from start to finish; the good is that it's amazingly realistic myrtle and it has nuclear performance.
It smells a lot more raw, salty and sharp than Sel Marine and it has much better performance, you owe it to yourself to try it out if it sounds interesting.

Godly frag, been wearing it all week. Will prob write a fragrantica review for it soon. I have both the EA and the FF vintage and have a backup FF bottle on the way. Both the current stuff and vintage are intensely soapy and bitter, but the FF juice is much more of a real chypre, with strong rose and oakmoss pervasive throughout the entire fragrance. The scent you get from afar is a woody violet/violet leaf, tinged with sudsy chamomile and lilac much like vintage Fahrenheit. The sillage is really like an extremely soapy version of vintage Fahrenheit with the “gasoline” and iso e super removed. 10/10 fragrance, I like the FF era stuff more than Fahrenheit and Sung Homme now.

The current EA juice was a gift from my girlfriend last winter before I got the FF on my own accord. It still smells like Grey Flannel, but its noticeably simpler, with its sandalwood, oakmoss, and intense floralcy shaved down a bit in favor of more powdery musk. The scent up close is reminiscent of the sillage or vintage, and the sillage of current stuff is quite fresh and powdery. I don’t think I can call the modern EA Grey Flannel a true chypre as it lacks the intoxicating, standoffish bitter oakmoss and rose from the vintage, but it still smells great and gets a 8.5/10 from me. Thank you for reading my blog

Tabu was the Genghis Khan of orientals: break a bottle in your luggage and you wouldn’t need the Golden Horde to clear your way. The modern version still has swagger, even looks dark and mean, and stains fabric like mad, no doubt due to the presence of a powerful Schiff’s base in its composition. The most interesting thing about this is that often Schiff bases are formed by fragrance compounds, which I should have expected as a chemist, but never really given much thought to. I had thought of creating fragrances myself at some point and using reversible reactions to make fragrances last longer, e.g. like Febreze uses cyclodextrin to capture smelly molecules, I would add cyclodextrin which has already captured smelly molecules and then using body heat to release them over time. But getting into that is very expensive and acquiring diverse enough raw materials is a real hassle.
