Just doesn't click with me. Tries to be a toolwatch but too pretty looking.

Patek
Very underwhelming irl without the picture perfect images. Looks unremarkable

It tries to ride on the coattails of the vintage design but uses a maxi case (original was 38mm) which defeats the purpose of an unobtrusive watch to use in polo sports

Originally watches used mercedes hands because the binding agent that paired with the radium sucked ass and large pieces would crack within a few years. This was compounded by watches not being waterproof at all. (Imagine wet mud in the summer)
So instead, they divided it into smaller sections to prolong lifespan.

That said, I think the design looks good, is extremely easy to read and separate visually from the GMT hand.

No one in their right mind would use a Submariner as a tool, if you are sensible you will use your luxury watches on a calm day as if it were a dress watch. Discovering this truth has made me appreciate dress watches more, the finer and more sophisticated designs, the beauty of movements like a perpetual calendar. Does such a watch exist?

> Your budget
Sub 1000.
> Watch type, e.g. dress, diver, pilot
Field watch.
> Movement, e.g. automatic, hand wound, quartz
Automatic.
> Desired features, e.g. water resistance, day/date, 2nd time zone
Brushed or polished steel finish, water resistance at least 100m.
> Preferred strap option, e.g. leather, nylon, bracelet
Nylon but doesn't matter much.
> Wrist size or desired watch size
Sub 40mm.

The only field watches I can find that match those criteria are all quartz.

Essentially I'd like to have pic related but with actual water resistance.

I like homages when they're of pieces that are out of active production, like most of the Seiko Monster variations. The current Monster/Prospex lineup still looks good, but I'm surprised that they abandoned the teeth-style indices for all of the models. Same for the indices with numbers at the end of them like gen 1 Monsters.

I also don't mind Invictas, since they're so clearly not Rolexes that they end up being just generic-but-solid entry-level options. An Orient would certainly be better looks-wise (in my opinion at least), but an Invicta is a fine starter watch. I even picked one up myself as a beater last year.

But something about Pagani doesn't vibe well with me. I can't put my finger on it, but something about the designs they pick feel cheaper than even Invictas, at least from photos. I'd have to see one in person to really decide.

I don't know how they consistently make at lease one bad choice with every watch. Where do you even get a 24 click bezel and case? Aren't 120 click bezels pretty standard? It's also thick. Is NH34 a traveler GMT or office GMT? I think it's an office GMT but I'm not sure.

I have yet to see even 1 good microbrand watch. Either they just make copies of watches but put their own (often ugly) logo on so it's a "homage" or they make a classic design worse to avoid the ripoff label or they make an own design that just looks goofy and unrefined.

With all honesty, Long Island Watch does a pretty good job of paying homage to historical watch designs while still taking it in a different direction and keeping costs down. Like with the Manhasset you can see obvious Explorer design references but they've taken it in a different almost more dressy direction with dauphin hands and more polishing and a shiny brushed rehaut that's actually pretty unique. I actually love this watch. But in general, at worst they make decent shitters if you want an automatic you can work in.

All Islander watches are blocky af, I don't like that.

Objectively Mark also has little idea about what he's actually doing and I doubt he's actually putting much though in his designs.

The Explorer is all about legibility, hence big letters and thick hands and lume everywhere. Here only the big letters remain but the hands and hour markers are thin with even thinner lume or no lume at all.
In the end you get a watch that fails as a field watch and as a dress watch.
