Entire industrys been running an inflationary borderline scam.

Here's some evidence.
Pre pandemic Fossil watch- $100
After- $100

Swatch models- $110
After- $110

Gshock- $150
After- $150

We are just using some of their cheap models as examples...

Ok so riddle me this why would watches like Rolex that have numerous editions held in their safes to distribute to dealers as they see fit...
Why would these go up 25-30%.

Makes no sense at all theres 0 additional scarcity they're still releasing around 1 millon of these things onto the buyers market per year.
If anything they're more common than most brands aside from some of the obvious EG Casio, Fossil etc.

Also Swiss watches aren't really swiss anymore they only need to be 40% swiss. So my Swiss mechnaism watches are no worse than a Swiss watch unless its say made in house with inhouse parts.

Sleek as fuck, and sick ass dial, but my fixation with GS is unfortunately with the Spring Drive ones so I didn't seek this one out in the process. That said, Hi Beat is good if you're a mechanical purist who buys the Rolexbro propaganda where Spring Drive isn't a mechanical.

Is this your first GS? One factor you're not going to be ready for is the visual effect of the zaratsu polish which essentially counts as a feature since gives the case a mother of pearl like visual effect. That said, it's not exclusive to GS, high end Citizen and Casio watches also have watches with zaratsu polish.

This thing came out in 2020 and I was very interested but then bad things happened that wiped watches from my mind for a while.

I just noticed that there's a quite a few of these floating around used for pretty decent prices (?). Is there anything wrong with this model or movement I should know about? It's mainly because they're second hand from Japan. Japanese Watch consumers are not as speculative with second hand watches as Western ones are, we mark up luxury brands even when they're pre-owned, and they frown on that practice.

So if they ever sell these watches, they'd be at 30-40% less than RRP regardless of whether they just wore it once then immediately sold it or if they've worn it quite a bit.

They'd have been the perfect hack to getting legit luxury brands for like $3-4k off if only duty fees from customs didn't get in the way, since they tend to be around $400-500, and that's not counting taxes.

I want to buy this chinkshit watch (Seagull Starry Sky) but the only place I can find that sells it is the mfg’s website. They claim that all customs and duty fee’s are the responsibility of the buyer. What are the chances of getting hit with this? I already don’t want to pay $500 for the fucking watch let alone some customs fee. Speaking of which, how is the custom’s fee determined in the US? Does the fee scale with the value of the watch?

why do people only seem to hype up the Reverso? JLC makes some really stunning watches

>> No.17755864

>>17755861
The Reverso is their signature model. It's what many people think when they think JLC. A lot of people, when buying a watch as expensive as a JLC, want people to know it's a JLC. A Reverso is instantly recognizable. Unless you're already a fan of the brand, you have to get up pretty close to a Master-series before you know what it is.

For whatever reason, most of their other watches, despite being excellently engineered, are a little bland in terms of design. I think that's on purpose. In the 2000s, JLC's designs went a little crazy. They tried to do some really avant garde stuff and none of it landed; today it looks really dated. They retreated back to their classic, subdued designs.

>> No.17755866

>>17755866
I agree.
JLC doesn't brag that much about it (maybe they should) but their Master watches are tougher than most people would imagine. They've got decent shock resistance and magnetic resistance. 50m of water resistance isn't great but it's no different than a Speedmaster and people have no problem wearing those as a daily wearer. (Plus, the 1000 Control test includes a test of water resistance, so 50m actually means 50m)

If there's any downsides, it's that the high polish does attract hairlines and, between the size and the silver dials, they can appear a little large on the wrist.

>>17755980
Reminds me of the proplof. Crowns work way better here. If it was titanium it would be a cool gimmick watch.

My previous opinion on JLC was that they were an amazing movement maker that couldn't design a decent watch to save their brand. Now I realize that Richemont is just not giving them a chance like they do to their other brands. At least they have a nice repertoire for some revivals if they stop trying to sell the minimalism to chinks. Also thanks for posting watches in a watch thread.

JLC inconsistent and weird designs are the reasons why they'll never be on the same level as Patek or Vacheron. The 90s and 00s were rough for a lot of brands, but this kind of ugly shit show a complete lack of long-term vision from the brand, and even understanding of its own "heritage". That Reverso Squadra for example is straight up revolting and insulting, and whoever green lighted this deserves to be shot.
The Polaris line STILL gives off vibes of poorly thought out design. The internal rotating bezel is a terrible idea, and it makes the dial appears bigger than it needs to be. It's different for the sake of being different.
I hate to say this, but JLC is a one watch brand.

I'm intrigued by the Polaris line but it does have an identity crisis. It can't decide if it's a pilot watch or a dive watch. If it at least had a GMT movement and either a 24 hour bezel or a world time bezel it would make a lot more sense. But it would still be too big and too thick.

It's relatively tasteful for a Timex but not an especially good deal. For $350 you get a domed acrylic crystal(yes, a $350 watch has a plastic crystal) a slightly odd 18mm lug width so you can't match it with the millions of 20mm strap options, and a leather strap that probably contains the minimum legal limit of leather to be called leather. But at least they throw in a cheap 18mm chinese nato strap with it?

JLC is not really a watch brand at all. They are a movement maker. They did not design the Reverso case, they bought the design. The Compressor case design used in the Polaris was originally made by Erwin Piquerez and was used by lots of companies. (See, the Longines Legend Diver's original inspiration)

JLC focused on making great movements so companies like VC, AP, Cartier, etc could focus on making pretty designs.

That's the way watchmaking was almost always done historically. A number of surviving old school watch companies today have a legacy going back to a time when they just made movements or just made cases, or just assembled parts produced by such companies into finished watches. Squale used to just make dive watch cases for example, and Seiko started out just building watches from swiss parts.
