Not a theory.

You cannot signify Old Money through your clothes or possessions. People who aren't Old Money don't know what it is. They just see "rich". People who ARE Old Money know you aren't Old Money because they don't know you.
Even if you marry into it, they will know you're just a guest. That's how it works.

Here are some signifiers:

- If your admission to Harvard was guaranteed before you were born
- When you are asked about where you're from, you don't answer "I'm half-German, a quarter Polish...". You answer, "My father's side is Lowell and my mother's side is Cabot."
- When you go for a job interview at one of the elite firms, you don't talk to HR, you talk to a C-suite executive who starts the interview with "Holy shit, I haven't seen you since you were 12! How's you're Uncle Philip doing?

You don't have to like it, but it is what it is.

It's not a GMT watch, it's a dual-time watch. Both hour hands make a complete revolution in 12 hours.
The second hour hand (the blue one) is your home time. The main hour hand (the silver one) is your local time. It can be advanced in one-hour jumps when you travel to different timezones. The day-night indicator is tied to the home time hand and lets you know if it's day or night back home.

Import fees and sales taxes are different for everyone.

Let's just say you go on Chrono24 and find a Speedmaster Pro in Japan for around 3,300 dollars.
You don't have to pay C24 any additional fees. The seller pays the fees. (The seller will include the fees in his sales price, though.)
Shipping cost is something you negotiate with the seller.
Sales tax is US state specific. You can do your own math on that front.

Import duties are strange, depending on the stated value of the watch. In the 3000-4000 dollar range, I've been hit with import duties of max. 120 dollars. Usually it's around 60 dollars. Most often, I don't have to pay import duties at all and it's just shipped to me as if it were a pack of socks. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason.

Both the Rolex Daytona and Zenith El Primero Revival have an automatic movement and are 12mm thick. Most BREITLING chronographs are thinner than the Sneed.

What are the thicknesses of old vintage chronos?
Omega insists on putting on a crystal that looks a vintage plexiglass one.
That is going to add some height.

One of the things that makes Rolexes thin these days is that they use flat crystals, not domed. Back when the Sub used a domed plexiglass crystal, it was also Omega thick, the ref. 5513 being about 14mm thick.

But obviously, you're just spamming Omega memes, so you do you.

>Why? Are they better than the current ones?
Yes, currently IWC use Sellita pre-built shit for their entry level watches and the in-house for their more expensive pieces. But they may have stopped that now and just use the 120h movement in all models, not sure.
>I also have a iwc from before they started doing in-house movements
What year? If it's before 2011, it was still an ebauche that IWC modified and built from pieces. After that ETA only sold them ready movements.

I don't know if it will add value when selling but it's nicer to know that when wearing it.

>> No.17744984

>>17744980
Also there are unconfirmed rumors that the final ETA ebauche movements are the last ones to receive IWC spec upgrades; they replaced a ton of shit, including escapement, barrel and spring, which they all made themselves. It was basically an in house movement. Until ETA banned them from doing that by selling ready kits. IWC never confirmed if there was a part difference, if they had ETA make the movement to their spec or not.

>> No.17744986

>Omega insists on putting on a crystal that looks a vintage plexiglass one. That is going to add some height.
Just make the case thinner. This is a hand wind movement ffs.
The Speedmaster line is full of modernized designs that are all thick as cinder blocks. Why? Why is it OK to make green or burgundy Speedmaster with date windows but not touch at the thickness? Is the thickness of the Speedmaster sacred or something? Who's gonna complain if Omega made the Speedmaster 2mm thinner?

Brands alter their designs all the time. JLC has changed the lugs of the Reverso a few years ago and nobody's complaining. It was a great decision, the watch sits better on the wrist now.

>> No.17744988

>>17744986
As the guy said, the domed crystal adds an easy 2mm by itself, which is how you go from 12mm to 14mm. Then there's the magnetic shield behind the caseback, another 1mm. They removed that in the new model and it became thinner. That sucks, by the way. Speedy needs wrist presence.

This is also the case with the Seamaster 300 Heritage vs the the new No-Date Sub. The Sub and the SM300 have the same dimensions except thickness (12.3mm for the Sub vs 13.8mm for the SM300) but the Sub has a flat crystal and the Seamaster has a domed cystal designed to evoke old plexi crystals which more than accounts for the 1.5mm difference.
