it’s one of the most significant aromatic fougeres, calling it a fucking citrus woody like it’s bleu de chanel displays a comical obliviousness to both the actual composition of drakkar noir and its history. also most aromatic fougeres (including drakkar noir) pale in comparison to classical fougeres, not that anyone in this clownshow thread would know.

Okay, today I've tried out The Cobra & The Canary by IA. It's been about 6 hours, 3 sprays, still going strong. Problem is I really don't like it, it's the first frag I've smelled that is truly disgusting to me. It smells like a freshly paved road on a hot day mixed with similarly hot car leather, and it's got a really tarry medicinal quality to it that I despise. After like 2 hours it fades out into a lighter, more sweetish leather scent that I find decent, but it's not worth it. I hate this perfume, and would only recommend it as a gag gift for someone you dislike.

What are some leather-dominant frags that y'all actually enjoy?

bogue mem and invasion barbare count as modern interpretations of classical fougeres, but you heavily lack context without having already smelled the original perfumes these were based on. fougere royale, jicky, blue stratos, vintage brut and perhaps even grey flannel (which is somewhere in between classic and aromatic) all count as historically important classic fougeres.

Invasion Barbare is an oriental fougere and most of the aromatic fougeres you're picking up on are closer to the classical fougere genre than IB. MEM is great, I own it and agree with that rec. Drakkar Noir is also closer to that than Grey Flannel you're mentioning. Jicky has been reformulated 100 times. I'd recommend New York Intense 9/10 times over it.

>> No.17708966

>>17708958
there’s nothing remotely oriental about invasion barbare, if anything it’s a clever spin on a classic fougere with references to cool water that make it strictly neoclassical. grey flannel is really closer to fahrenheit than it is to drakkar noir, but it’s an essential point of reference for understanding how classical fougeres turned into aromatic fougeres and eventually powerhouses; it doesn’t really belong in either camp. as for jicky, the current formulation is fantastic, enough for even a formulation snob like turin to approve. thierry wasser has finally found his calling as a reformulation whipping boy. and new york intense is not even remotely classical, it’s a semi-oriental fougere, making it even further removed from any of the above than paco rabanne or azzaro pour homme.

Never said that it's a classical fougere, it's as much of a classical fougere as Jicky which you mentioned (and which is frankly not a particularly good example of a classical fougere, what just shows your ignorance), and also actually a strictly better fragrance. It seems like you've just read that one blogpost on raiders of the scent about fougeres, never smelled any of those but for some reason want to play an expert here. It's not reddit, you can just take L without having to delete your account. Out of all of your recommendations, only MEM, vintage Brut and Fougere Royale could count as classical fougeres. You saying that there's nothing remotely oriental about IB made me initially think that you're just trolling, but it seems that you just have really no idea what you're talking about.

noob here so sorry if this has beenn discussed or asked before. I love Tom Ford Oud Minerale. I love it, and i'm so upset they stopped making it before I could buy a bottle (yes I found it quite late, only recently got into fragance n shit), but so far on my hunt for an alternative, or even a knockoff imitation, has been fruitless. I did find one knockoff by a company called Divain that is ok, but lacks the same body and pungency. It also lasts on the skin all of 0.003 nanoseconds. There is nothing that compares and I feel as though I am doomed to never find something I'll like as much again. does anyone have any suggestions for others I could try?

>it's as much of a classical fougere as Jicky which you mentioned
it really fucking isn’t a classical fougere at all. even nicolai herself refers to it as an oriental (NOT a fougere) on her website
>Patricia de Nicolaï conveys her fascination with ‘the city that never sleeps’ with her intoxicating oriental signature: after a start of citrus bursts, pepper and clove spice up the patchouli bordered with vanilla, incense and balm.
obviously, it is a fougere, but in the same way that shalimar is - only tangentially given how little lavender and how much amber it has. conversely, jicky’s focus is entirely on citrus overlaying ethylvanillin and lavender overlaying civet musk. it’s likely the highest quality example there is today of a true classical fougere excluding the fact that barely anyone can verify if the current fougere royale resembles the original at all. i have no idea what the fuck you classify a classical fougere as if you don’t consider jicky to be one of the landmarks of it. it literally came out just 7 years after fougere royale when there was no such thing as classical or aromatic or oriental fougeres, it was simply considered a fougere. how the fuck is it anything less than?
>It seems like you've just read that one blogpost on raiders of the scent about fougeres, never smelled any of those but for some reason want to play an expert here.
i have a hard time believing you’ve actually smelled jicky given you apparently think jicky somehow isn’t a classical fougere. the fact that you disparaged the current formulation already kinda tells me you have no idea how it smells like.
>You saying that there's nothing remotely oriental about IB made me initially think that you're just trolling, but it seems that you just have really no idea what you're talking about.
please, point me to a single piece of literature on invasion barbare that hints at any sort of vanillic or amber focus. it’s a huge barbershop lavender with violet leaf.

SOTD New York Intense
I have no clue what the fuck is going on in this thread and I have decided not to care. I'm currently in the phase where NYI has obvious similarities to Lalique Pour Homme, but with an additional warmth and spice to it that just make it smell like money.

Funny story - every time I wear NYI to a meeting of a big important project, they fall through. Every time I wear Platinum Egoiste, they absolutely succeed. To switch it up, I swapped to Beau de Jour instead of NYI and guess what, the projects fell through. Went back to PE and had nothing but success. I'm not superstitious, but I'm in quality/project management and statistics are very important, and the amount of times this happened has far exceeded a trend and is now on significant deviation level (I had to take corrective action). Gonna wait until the first project falls through where I'm wearing PE (hasn't happened in the last 9-10 months).

It seems that it is just all due to one simple fact. You don't wear New York Intense, but New York Intense wears you. I have on many occasions cautioned men to avoid wearing fragrances that have seen more of the world than they have, and I believe this is the main danger of New York Intense. Still, I understand that the temptation is great.

I'm not usually a big fan of aquatics, but having one around for the summer would be nice, and if this accomplishes for 7$ what most designer aquatics do for 50, that's fine by me. especially since I do like rose, so I'll probably enjoy it more than most of them

You like to distract yourself with perfumes, the only difference is that you have to spend money on it. Everyone I know who likes perfumes is just as obsessed, just like people who like videogames or sneakers. Try to order a pack of samples that are cheaper and to enjoy your perfumes by writing reviews about them or participating in forums, do not base your hobby solely on buying.

I also nearly drank myself to death during bad times as a "Whiskey and craft beer connoiseur". Yeah. You're not alone, bruh, it can get better - and not like this is very bad.

I’m a bit drunk so I’ll you a story. I got one of my pandemic fuckbuddies into niche perfumes. Every time she was coming over I was showing her some of my fragrances, we were drunkenly blind testing samples and discussing them I was getting her occasionally a decant or a bottle of stuff I wanted to smell on her or gifted her a Turin’s guide etc. She picked up on this hobby very quickly. I haven’t seen her for a while as I had to move back to London for some time because of work. Yesterday I came back to the town and texted her if she wants to come visit me. It turned out that in the meantime she’d found a job at a local niche perfumery, and she brought me some samples as a gift. I know most of these frags but still find it very adorable.

Anon, her fragrances all smell the same and are pretty boring aside from couple of good ones, but at least she's cute and she will write you a personal card if you order the display set, which is pretty worth getting to be honest. A very decent one. I'm just being very honest when I say that there is probably only one fragrance at most worth buying a full bottle of. Everything else is either a literal who or has way better alternatives to it. It's honestly perfume made for women. Not because it's feminine, but because it's rather uncreative.

17710765

Another day, another IA scent crossed off the list. Falling Into The Sea is a nice return to bright summery fragrances after Cobra & Canary, but I wasn't really impressed. It's got a fresh citrus zing on first spray that goes especially hard on the lemon, and over time a faint floral note gets introduced. I don't know what lychee is supposed to smell like desu but it's probably not a game changer either way. My big problem is that it's kind of boring, especially at $105/50mL. I can get a different fresh citrus that smells almost exactly the same for like half the price or less, and really don't see a world where buying this instead is justifiable.

You all hate Sauvage because it's throws the reality of the world in your face every time you smell it.
Sauvage isn't brilliant, it isn't exceptional, it isn't magical. It is simply well put together, friendly, out going, doesn't quit and manages to fit in without changing in almost every situation. And that is more than good enough because the overwhelming majority of people love it. And this is documented time and time again, video after video and post after post. People love Sauvage.
Sauvage as a fragrance is what you wish you could be as a person, but aren't. Instead you'll sit around circle jerking the rare ingredients and exotic creations, lauding each other for your superior taste, looking down on the plebs who shower Sauvage with compliments. Why don't they compliment you? Isn't it obvious how much better your fragrance is? It's niche for gods sakes!
Nevermind that you don't actually understand what niche even means.
So you'll post and post, seething and pretending to laugh at your own wit each time you meme about Bois Imperial. But one black day you'll crack and do the unthinkable: You'll buy Sauvage. You won't post about it here of course, my god why would you? You have a completely anonymous reputation to protect! You'll spray it on and part of you will be ashamed and feeling transgressive, but a small sliver of you will feel hopeful for a change. Maybe, just maybe, today I'll be noticed. Today I'll get a compliment. I just want to feel what it's like one time, everyone else loves this stuff, surely there's one compliment left for me?
I genuinely pity you when you still won't get a compliment and are forced to confront the reality that even a jovial titan like Sauvage cannot mask how rotten, desolate and unappealing you are.

So keep shitting on Sauvage, spray your niche of the month or whatever arab oil is getting hawker now. Much like a tranny pretends to be a woman you are equally delusional in your claims of superiority. Cope and seethe.

received my bottle of Jeanne en Provence Acqua today, here are my first impresions:
it really is very similar to Kenzo Pour Homme. a sea breeze with a touch of fresh rose sort of scent. I'm also getting a slightly darker, moody feel in the drydown, maybe from the pine and woody notes. feels maybe a bit softer and more rosy than the more agressive kenzo, but I've only smelled that one briefly
I'm happy with it, it's exactly what I expected. doesn't smell expensive, but neither does the original nor any other designer aquatic and frankly, this smells better than most of them to me, maybe because it doesn't have any sweet candy fruit notes or citrus. for 7$ this is the perfect spray and forget fragrance for super hot days.
I'll report back on the longevity

I'm not him, I just saw your illiteracy and wanted to let you know. And to be honest it makes much more sense to haggle for 8 dollars on a cheap frag than on an expensive one. If you're already paying 200, then paying 208 is whatever. If it's 28 and they ask for 36 then that's around 30% of the price.

because who really gives a shit? just buy from the reseller than has the fastest shipping or is the closest to you, because any savings you make will be incredibly meager and irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. i really don’t give a fuck about paying $10 more if it’s from a discounter that has another perfume i want so i can combine shipping, or if it’s from the discounter that’ll get it to me a week earlier. god damn, have you people never shopped online before or something?

The point of my message was mostly to say something similar to YMMV

With hugely popular frags, you are likely yo have a sort of mental association with it. For example, frags like Aqua Di Gio Profondo remind me of stinky Indian International students because that DNA is extremely similar to the types of scents they wore while I was going to college. I don’t think it fits them, maybe that’s just my experience with them, maybe they should wear a more oriental type of frag because whenever I smell a Profondo style of frag, I think it stinks because my brain associates it with the latent stink a lot of them unfortunately have due to their genotype. Oriental frags mask that body odor smell better for them.

All in all, I am trying to say if you’re wondering about a super popular frag like Cool Water, you can literally just go to the mall and sample it for free. You’re also super likely to find it in those mall kiosks for cheap, you don’t even have to go to a department store.

Btw I’m not trying to make fun of any Indian people in this thread, I realize you probably can only adjust your BO to a certain extent because a lot of it is genes. Just try to get a frag which better aligns with your own body or whatever. You may even have to shower multiple times per day. Everybody is different. In Basic Training I knew a guy who had to shave 3x per day because he grew his beard very fast, that’s just an unfortunate part of his body for his specific situation. Just adjust as best you can to your own specific situation.

You two were talking about fragrantica comments. The musk note listed on frags is artificial. Pretty sure it even says it on the note page in fragrantica that it is synthetic.

civetone is not real civet, but it objectively speaking is still a real musk. also, to be clear, fragrantica makes no differentiation between synthetic and real civet or castoreum; the civet note under jicky applies to both the real civet musk in a vintage bottle and the civetone in the current formulation. if you’re going to be a pedant, at least do it right. o

I am replying to admit fault because I did mess up since a green text implies I am quoting you directly.
