Yea I have a few, Bortnikoff Sir Winston and Sans Fleurs both have real ambergris, and Parfum D'Empire's Ambre Russe apparently has real stuff in it according to the perfumer.

Just get the sample set from the website. Why do people not see how that's an incredible deal? You buy the sample set, you can test the entire range, and if you still want to buy Bois Imperial after that, you get a discount (of the same value as the sample set did cost you). You can sample all their fragrances for free, basically, as long as you decide to buy a full bottle afterwards.

Yup, probably this is the closest one can get to experiencing natural ambergris in fragrances that are actually available. However, I think neither of these Bortnikoffs showcase ambergris well. If you don't know what to look for, you won't recognize it.

I'm the original Bois Imperial poster who started it here all, and always been recommending getting a travel/sampling set first. Btw, apparently there was some reformulation and BI isn't as nuclear as it used to be? I'm about to finish my 100ml bottle and most likely not looking to rebuy it as I kind of got tired of the DNA, but I'm curious if the rumours are true.

Yea Sans Fleurs is mostly just a really powerful Oud and Winston is a great tuberose scent, SW is probably one of my favorite frags I own. Ambre Russe is really nice if you like the smell of champagne.

I've got a couple attars and some other samples as well. Tabac Dore and Triad for the attars, both are really good. The drydown on tabac dore is great and Triad is a really good oud rose attar. For samples I have Oud Maximus 2020, Oud Monarch and Tabac Dore. Maximus changes quite a bit over the wear, starts out pretty animalic with a good hit of birch tar, smells almost like that old pine tar soap at first. Once the birch wears down a bit it smells amazing. Monarch was a bit too floral for me but still really nice smelling, I'll have to try that one out again to get a better idea of it and Tabac Dore is just a great tobacco. I really like it and might get a full bottle one day, but I almost like the attar more than the edp so I might just stick with that.

Memoirs of a Trespasser is of similar woody type as BtF, the sweetness is toned down and it adds a little incense. Lacks nuts, though.
Eau des Baux has already been mentioned, it has the right type of smoke, but isn't nutty. You could also try Karite Corse from L'Occitane, it's a bit nutty but not smokey.
Last but not least, L'Homme Ideal L'Intense. It technically fits the criteria but is as far from BtF as it could be. Nutty, smokey, woody, a bit leathery.

I bought a 5ml decant and finished because I like it as an office scent, cheap, subtle and non offensive. It's a vanilla woody scent with some spicy undertones on my nose that makes it really pleasant. Its the only replica I like and the performance on me lasts for the whole shift. Dont understand the hate for it.

I remember oud being really interesting, but I will report back this week when I get the stuff

What some neo right wingers call aryan today is just a mutty white person with all kinds of mongolian and negro DNA in them.

Guys please for fuck's sake stop wearing gourmands.
The whole genre stems from A*men, which is a rebranded womans fragrance. Even ourguy Luca Turin said that it would smell good on a woman but would be ridiculous on a man. And Amen worked just because the strong sweetnes was balanced with stinky patchouli. Modern gourmands, are not balanced, they are just various degrees of sterile sweetness and nothing else. It all smells like pudding, cookies, sweet alcohol and other stuff for kids and women. Fucking Polo Green has more youth to it than Oajan. My colleague wore it (either that or Killians Share), he's a young guy, and the impression that he makes wearing it is "I have a feminine hobby and spend significant amount of money trying to be posh". I don't know what convinced everybody that the smell of humans personal space is less attractive than a fucking cinabun and overweetened latte, but that's ridiculous. I'm assuming most of you are going for a traditionally masculine style, so wear something that reflects it. Most modern chypres and fougeres have some musk to them, it doesn't have to be Furyo
>but girls like it
no, they don't know what they like, so what they say they like is the stuff that indicates the guy takes care of himself. If some of you retards didn't discover yet, doing what a woman says you should do is the path to becoming a woman yourself. Wanting compliments is pathetic and uncharismatic, and in no way is an indicator of how good of an impression a fragrance makes.

Has Chanel Egoiste been newly reformulated?

I just got a new bottle, batch code May 2023. In direct comparison it smells distinctly different than my nearly empty bottle from 2020, definitely not as smooth and beautiful. Also it doesn't seem to last as long.

Level 6 is the state to achieve and most discussions are currently at least level 3 deep.
>What is the state of the general in your opinion?
Kinda dead and I rarely post that often myself by now (lots of work). But that's because /fa/ itself is dying, not like I care much about the other threads. Also, some people are leaving for greener pastures, including me. Parfumo community is nice for getting stuff and trading/swapping and I can't really be arsed writing reviews for any of the websites, so I only have finding stuff to smell and one-liner recommendations left for me to do on these threads.
>Are there any new notorious posters?
Gothrockanon but he has found what he wanted and his opinions about other fragrances are shit, BI shill who I also think pretends his clones are the real deal.
>Have any oldfags come back in the meantime?
Only to complain how shit this thread has become. Same as with every other thread, board or general.
>Seems like the threads maintained momentum, a variety of designer and niche fragrances is discussed
Yes, but it seems to upset some people when new posters come in, ask for a single suggestion, get the regular Jeremy-tier answers and then leave again. Something along the lines of "thread should only be around niche discussion" etc., as if some random anon will just buy stinky artisanal ouds upon our suggestion.

Slumberhouse Norne is the answer but it's hard to come by, so Pineward Murkwood or Hendley Fume will do as well for you. These are very dark, coniferous fragrances that can easily conjure the setting of Varg killing Euronymous in that hut in the middle of a Norwegian forest in 90s. DS&Durga's Bitter Rose, Broken Spear would be a patrician choice, but you will likely not pull off it properly because of the rose facets. Amouage Figment or Myths would be fitting as well, but Figment requires a very strong personality just so it doesn't wear you instead of you wearing the perfume. Beaufort London has plenty of fragrances that would fit the bill as well, and you will dig their dark, brooding aesthetic. However, these are all somewhat acquired taste recommendation. Overall, I suspect that you're probably looking for just something woody and smoky, so you can as well just look into Comme des Garcons Black, Montale Full Incense or countless other releases like that. Geo F Trumpers Eucris has something "metal" about it, too, and should be easily available if you live in Europe. See >>17703009 >>17703008

the only differences are in art direction (which matters, mind you, but not nearly as much as you seem to think) and materials budget (considerably less than the likes of chanel and guerlain, who regularly buy up exclusivity to entire fields of flowers). in other words, you’re making a mountain out of clever marketing and a low budget, falling for the same shtick as the aforementioned old ladies’ club when they tell me that byredo and diptyque are somehow “more artistic” than shalimar. total hogwash.

I see your point. I worked with the beer industry for some years, so I speak from experience, I understand how it goes. Macro lager buys craft brewery, "streamlines" production, eventually replaces everything but the brand itself. This then makes product at 35% of what it used to be (quality/flavour wise), aggressively marketed, sold as craft & pushed as part of portfolio.

This zombie beer will be slightly better/different than the regular macro, worse than it used to be, worse and louder than actual craft. Pushed to HoReCa along with full set - juices, macro, non-alco, mineral water.

Actually talked to a brewer in one of the macros, he said he has the skills to make any beer - but the company has bottom lines & markets. So he uses extract hops & rice malt.

Don't even like beer at this point, but I think the structure is exactly the same here.

>i have no idea what masstige is
That's precisely the term you're looking, for describing all pseudo-niche for well-off middle class mums and wannabe influencers. It's been one of the main discourses here a year or two ago and ruffled many anon's feathers by making them realize that their "niche" is not much different from designer brands they were looking down at. It is one of the hardest pills to swallow for people who started associating themselves with certain brands as a part of their identity.

the interesting thing is that brands bought by luxury conglomerates like LVMH and estee don’t tend to cheapen their classics or tamper with their art direction. it’s the downmarket groups like l’oreal and coty which spell the slow and inevitable deathknell of their classic lineups. and the bigger issue still is that the likes of diptyque and byredo have always been garbage; getting bought out didn’t change a thing in that respect.
>>17705022
both left and right columns have great companies and shitty ones. i think the bigger issue is that the aforementioned middle class mums care more about a well crafted image than the actual scent behind it.

You what mate? Frederic Malle has been in a constant, progressing decline since it has been acquired by Estee. I had a chance to smell two old versions of Musc Ravageur, and it was an entirely different perfume compared to that cinnamon bun smell they sell under this name now.

brands deliberately cheapening formulas is a form of outrage i’m not particularly inclined to believe in. more likely to me is IFRA scoundrels forcing reformulations due to banned materials (oakmoss, hydroxycitronellal), simple materials shortages (ie. sandalwood and civet) or the extremely influential but oft ignored factor of bottle maceration. my bottle of jicky could have passed for 2 entirely different scents between initial purchase and about 2-3 weeks after (where it’s stayed at since).

Not a single masstige brand uses natural materials like sandalwood or civet. Costs are one part of the equation making it unreasonable for them, the other, more important one, is consistency across different batches of these whimsical ingredients.

forum people and bloggers are the biggest perpetrators of reformulation paranoia. just yesterday i was looking into MDCI’s chypre palatin after having chanced upon it at a niche shop, and one of the things i found was that pretentious verbose faggot kafkaesque screaming about “reformulation woes”, only for claude marchal of marchal dessins et créations indépendantes to simply state that no reformulation had ever been done to the perfume. an absolute clownshow.
>Not a single masstige brand uses natural materials like sandalwood or civet
i was speaking more generally for the larger, older brands that have had to opt for sandalwood alternatives and civetone to replace the natural ingredients in their classics, but yes, most IFF/givaudan/firmenich creations use little to no naturals regardless. they make more off the synthetics they patent, after all.

>fort & manle, january scent project, gallagher fragrances
All great brands, I could name a dozen fragrances topping virtually everything on the right. What did you dislike so much from them? I agree about Imaginary Authors being the weakest one here, though.
> le parfum de therese
Ok, this is solid. Probably the best Malle as well. Gold used to be great, now its just a shadow of the former self. I don't find anything interesting or remarkable about Jubi. That being said, the thing with brands on the right is that they might have one exceptional release but 99% is bland (I would even argue that Initio, BDK, Margiela, Micallef and some others don't even have anything interesting or worth the money), while those on the left have almost every release remarkable in this or that way.
>>17705052
Not if stored correctly like >>17705055 says. Actually, the entire discourse about fragrances deteriorating is one of the examples of fragcom's schizophrenia. i wouldn’t trust any of these people to tell me how to get to 5th avenue, nevermind discern if the grasse rose in no. 5 has been replaced by a chinese one. the number of people i’d take seriously regarding claims of reformulation is very few, short of cold hard evidence like the formulation codes on guerlain bottles.
>I don't know why you want to argue with such a clear thesis like big corps optimizing costs where they can.
because upscale, upmarket conglomerates already make a killing selling a 100ml bottle at the prices they can command thanks to their name prestige. they could make more if they cheapened the formula, but realistically speaking, the cost and effort of hobbling together a replacement formula probably exceeds their potential profits. compare that to coty shitting out double digit priced department store fragrances that turnover considerably less per bottle, but sell considerably more bottles overall, and their motivation is far greater.
>All great brands, I could name a dozen fragrances topping virtually everything on the right
LOL please, it’ll take a lot more than gallagher making halfhearted aventus clones to top one of roudnitska’s greatest works. i could have named more brands if the thesis was for uninspired, middling ones rather than outright shitty ones, but the vast majority of them all suffer from chronic mediocrity. easier would be to name the brands on the left that genuinely do excel; tauer, nicolai, parfum d’empire, bogue, ormonde jayne, MDCI, auphorie (if we count one hit wonders), and (unfortunately) the zoo.
>I don't find anything interesting or remarkable about Jubi

Reminder that the kafkaesque chick gets headaches from Chypre Palatin because she thinks it contains a high dose of iso-e super, which means she is very susceptible to autosuggestion and her opinion can't be trusted, since a simple sticker like "this smells like apple" could already influence her perception of the fragrance. In double blind studies strong fragrances were unable to cause headaches in headache-prone people, but they could trigger migraines. Those who have migraines know the difference between a migraine and a headache. Perfumes were the main trigger for migraines, yet they were unable to cause headaches.

Also reminder that this is under laboratory conditions. In real life, the association of headaches with fragrances can be due to external circumstances and as a result the headaches triggered by those external circumstances would be falsely attributed to fragrances smelled at the time of the headache occuring.
