>I'm going to assume watch servicing requirements would make a mechanical watch inevitably dependent on intervention
Cheap mechs like those in the maymay are not worth the time of most watchmakers, hence why during say a factory service, if you were foolish enough to pay for a "factory service" for a low end seiko or any "swiss" watch below say 4-5 grand, they just rip that cheapo mech movement out, and slot a new one in. Just like with the "souless" basic quartz modules.
This probably happens more often than not with more expensive watches too, particularly the ones from the large conglomerates. TAG is known to do this. Too few watchmakers, a repair list a mile long.

From a watchrepairman's perspective:
>two clients come in
>one has a rolex or an older omega - something of actual value
>one has a seiko5 or some no-name shitter with an eta clone movement
>proper servicing time is basically the same for any of these, give or take an hour+
>guy only has so many hours a day to do this time consuming shit
>does he prioritize the shitters, or the watches whose repair he can charge more for?
>can't charge much for servicing the shitters because it's basically the cost of a new watch - client won't bother
So the choice is easy, they tell the cheap mech. customer to take a hike. The latter bitches about it on leddit, and proceeds to buy another shitter mech for the pile of CONSUUUUUMPTION.

Hence why the meme has both ends of the bellcurve recommending a quartz in order to rid noobs of the false romanticism of a mechanical watch movement in the lower tiers because chances are if you ever get it serviced they're just going to rip that shit out and give you a new one. Ship of Theseus deal. This fact bothers some who have delusions of passing down their ETAcloned shitter or seiko 3rdWorld edition to some non-existent and impossible progeny.

Maybe you're lucky and you know a watchmaker that will bother. As time goes by chances of this increasingly approach zero.

You CAN'T make blue steel cases because the color wears off. This is why it's only used for hands or movement parts.
You CAN make blue titanium cases but it's a fucking pain to make and it's expensive as fuck. That's why you only see it on $100k De Bethune.
The only other ways to make blue watches are plastic, ceramic or by using PVD coating. That's why you don't see it on vintage watches.

Blueing is fragile and will immediately come off with constant contact with anything acidic (like sweat). It's difficult to blue stainless steel since blueing is a form of controlled oxidation that protects carbon steel from rusting. You can somewhat replicate the effect with PVD finishes, but that is not the same as traditional heat blueing with carbon steel. Traditional blueing is semi-transparent, and if you look closely, you can see the metal grain.

It was kind of an impossible ask, to be fair: Make a steel, integrated bracelet sports watch with a textured blue dial that brings to mind the Royal Oak...but doesn't look like it's copying the Royal Oak.

Even the wealthy know it's just a cope Royal Oak, so VC has to instead make it a good-looking watch that stands distinctively on its own merits, but it's forced to do so within a paradigm that is fundamentally ugly.
When you look past the hype, the APRO, the Nautilus, the others, are actually pretty fugly watches (which is, of course, why they fell out of fashion for decades before the speculator-driven hype resumed a few years ago.)

I bought a piece of property about 15 years ago, a couple thousand square feet, completely undeveloped, for about 25k.
I literally did nothing for it for a decade. It produced no value. There was nothing except weeds.
5 years later I sold it to a housing developer for 140k, when the town became more desirable to live in.

Where did that value get generated?

Or was that speculating too?

The quartz have nicer dials in general. The sunburst is better executed than the fake tapisserie dial that the automatics have.
A Royal Oak's tapisserie dial is actually engraved with a guilloché machine so it looks sharp. The Tissot's is simply pressed brass so it looks sloppy.

Add to that the original Tissot had a sunburst dial while the tapisserie just makes the PRX an APRO cope.

I'm the anon who tried a Reverso Duoface yesterday.
When I was in the boutique, the sale assistant (a very young dude) told me the Duoface and Monoface are going to be discontinued soon. Obviously I knew he was bullshitting because both of these watches are best sellers for JLC, so I didn't pay much attention.
Now he just left me a message telling me JLC (???) wants to know if I'm buying it or not, because the watch is going to be discontinued any time now.

Why do sale assistants do this? I was actually planning on buying the watch from this boutique but now I'll just go somewhere else. I was even okay with paying the full price (with the usual 10% discount) even though it's available on C24 for cheaper. That idiot just missed a sale.

Help me out /wt/, I'd like a watch with a similar design language to those in the attached picture. My additional requirements are:

>37mm-40mm
>steel bracelet
>date complication
>at least 10bar water resistance
>preferably a screw-down crown, but not mandatory
>budget of $3k

I love the dial of the Guinand Flight Officer (top right), but it sits too large at 42mm, and lacks a screw-down crown.

I really like the case and proportions of the Sinn 556, but find the dial plain, and prefer the more detailed dial of the Guinand.

The IWC XVII is nice (albeit a little big), but I hate the bracelet that it comes with. I'm seriously considering custom machining a set of endlinks to adapt a Sinn H-link bracelet to it.

Right now I'm leaning toward the Damasko DS30 or DK32 (same as DS30, but with their movement).

I guess my ideal watch would be a 1016 Explorer with a luminova service dial and hands, but I don't have $12k in my pocket.

Let me know if you guys know of any other options in this general category.

>same as DS30, but with their movement
bad move imo
buying a special snowflaek mvt from a tiny family run company, that don't always seem to have their shit together, that only they can produce parts for and probably only they can service considering damasko's special sealing mechanisms etc., is not a hassle I personally would want to deal with. I have a dk36 and already I'm unsure of where to send to to get it fixed because of the snowflake seals. Also the way germany's going I do not have long term confidence in such smaller firms as damasko to weather the storm considering how real, heavy industry is doing there and its current trajectory.
If you don't care about this perhaps autistic long-term view then go ahead it's your money, but I don't think it's that far off desu.
I would of those you've shown select the Sinn. Personally I like it more than the others because the dial is an inky black rather than the matte charcoal like black of the others; makes the stark white stand out more. The movement is a basic ETA, ubiquitous, easy to fix and that model doesn't have sinn's proprietary and retarded argon gas pellet thing to prevent fogging, so basically all you have to worry about is the movement and that can be done anywhere there's watchmakers left to fix things. The IWC is a waste of money.
I know nothing about that Oris but thought it was closer to 42mm in size. If it has their new special mvt then avoid that too.
The sinn may be boring, but of the lot in pic it's the most sensible choice.
We don't have to dictate our purchases by what's sensible, however.
There's the variant of that sinn with a red second hand although that's like Mr. Grey Bland deciding to wear a loud, red tie with his nondescript business suit to work one day.

Also have a look at the other german brands Mühle-Glashütte and Archimede. The latter's Outdoor model fits your specs although there's some fuckery with the bracelet iirc.

Unfortunately Baltic will never be able to mass produce this.
>they use cheap third party movements (Selita and Soprod mostly), and only high end manufacturers know how to produce perpetual calendar movements
>they're a very small brand and releasing a 5k+ watch would be insanely risky for them (their most expensive watch is their chronograph and it's less than 2k).

Frederique Constant makes an in house perpetual calendar (it's fucking ugly but still). They're asking 9k+ for it and I doubt it's profitable. See it more as a "prestige" thing.
Baume & Mercier also makes one, but the same movement is used in IWC and probably other Richemont brands so they can maximize profits on R&D.

They're sticking it in a highlife case so if anything is expensive to manufacture it's the movement itself. They're absolutely profitable individually, the question is, has the R&D cost paid itself off with the sales so far or not, it doesn't look like a very successful model.
They work with smaller margins than other swiss brands in the first place so I doubt they had so much money to waste on unprofitable R&D, I'd be surprised if they were not fine.
