In general it's not wrong, but formal coats with casual stuff specifically look awful to me, since things like overcoats pretty much exist specifically to go over suits. Similarly, a sports coat with a t shirt can look ok, but a suit jacket with a t shirt generally looks awful because it's designed to be worn with a suit.
