Looking for thoughts/advice on this one. Vintage J. Press suit bought off ebay for $300, how'd I do? I don't especially like the shoulders—otherwise something feels off that I can't put my finger on, but maybe I've just been looking at it too much.

>> No.17665286

Is it the fact there's two different style pockets? Or maybe just that it's a 3 point button which I personally don't love.

>> No.17665289

>>17665282
The sleeves are a little bit short and the jacket looks a lot blacker than the trousers, other than that it's a very conservative suit. If the shoulders don't fit well, you might have an expensive problem.
>>17665286
The pocket flap might have just fallen into the pocket, happens quite a lot with some of my blazers

>> No.17665297

>>17665286
Pocket flap was just tucked into the pocket. And it's definitely a 3/2. probably just looks that way from futzing with the tie for the photo
>>17665289
Yeah, the sleeves were insanely short when I got it, this was the best the tailor could do. Shoulders fit fine, it just seems like they have a lot of padding and it doesn't look very /tip/ to me.
Jacket is the same color as the trousers, the lighting in my apartment just sucks.

I mean... Thats not how a 3 roll 2 looks. Maybe you need to have the lapel pressed to be the right shape again.
And i agree with the other anon, shirt and suit sleeves should be like 1/2 in longer so they don't go up too high when your arms are in any other position than the side.

Linen seems to be a bit off-white even when you get them in white, mine are creamy. If you want a less cream off white, cotton works. Personally I like pleats because I have big thighs, but it's not like many people sell them off the rack anyway.

The only reason you should have buttons on back pockets is if you are not going to use said pockets. And in that case, just get pants without back pockets. You know how awkward it is to unbutton one of those to take something out? I have never had anything fall out of my back pockets, ever. And I put things in them every day, without using buttons.

anyone else go for a more capsule wardrobe approach?
I wouldn't say I'm super committed to having the most bare-bones capsule wardrobe possible but it's pretty streamlined nowadays. i prioritised cutting out stuff that only works in certain colour combinations and outfits i.e. when paired with a singular other item and nothing else. i could now pick my outfit blindfolded and it'll most likely look good with a few exceptions that are self-evident. also, pretty much nothing needs to be washed separate. i can also try to buy the highest quality shit for every single piece. feels good man.

Youre in trad ivy prep general. Not anything related to suits or menswear general. If you like 3 button, whatever. But its not the ivy way, so dont expect much positive response. I dont personally find it flattering.
Also, regarding denim, sportcoats with a more rugged texture like tweed work best with jeans. Because obviously both are intended for more rugged use.

I come from a somewhat money-driven, preppy, and superficial environment. Recently, I noticed nobody wears Ralph Lauren clothing. As soon as the brand is mentioned in my circles, comments are made about it being 'co-opted' and no longer being a good, 'nice' brand. I also agree with many of my friend's comments on how the horse has become so large it's practically a joke. Sad to see, since I like the Ralph Lauren stuff. Thoughts?

I have the fundamental character flaw of preferring jeans to chinos, so I'd never be mistaken for old money anyway, but I love elements of ivy style for their own merits. First and foremost the versatility of the look. The same ocbd and loafers can be worn with shorts to the park, with denim to a (casual) office, or with flannel trousers, a navy blazer, and a rep tie for occassions where you don't quite need a full suit. Secondly the clothes are comfortable, flattering, and only look better with age. Which lends itself great to the fact that the look is largely trend-less. You can realistically do something like >>17667807 and keep the capsule for your entire life, replacing pieces only when they wear out.

In the preppy/ivy world, tie bars are like pleated trousers, they're a "sin." The whole point of prep/ivy is to show irreverence to the rules, kind of like sprezzatura, this includes your tie moving a bit when you walk around campus.

The irony being "no tie bars" has become its own rigid rule. It's vital to understand the "rules" of a style so you can break them, at a certain point adhering to every single rule means you aren't wearing what you want, you're effectively wearing a costume assembled by people you don't even interact with.

Same for no pleats. Pleats may be against prep and ivy but they're sure as shit "trad" so people complaining about pleats in a trad/prep/ivy thread is another bit of a head scratcher.

>Now do you think youre more respected when you dress like this, or like a video game character?
I mean, of course I'm more respected (amongst you guys at least) dressing like this, but at the same time, I'm not a /tip/ person, I don't come from a /tip/ background or move in /tip/ circles, dressing as if I do makes little sense.

At the end of the day, we ARE still on 4chan, and if you went to a traditionally preppy/ivy social gathering like a polo race or boating club or what have you and asked them if they liked to discuss their sense of style on an online imageboard originally created to discuss anime, I'd wager they'd have no fucking clue what you're on about. This site doesn't typically attract people like that, it's a miracle that somehow there are people simultaneously on both sides of that cultural chasm.

This site does, however, for better or worse, tend to attract people like me, the exact kind of person just autistic enough and disconnected enough from having any sort of footing in the "normal" social canon of wider society that their identity is pieced together more from media than IRL experiences and context and as such dressing like a "video game character" seems like a matter of course.
Plus, the outfit doesn't quite -in a sense- "dance" the same way some of my other outfits do to me. Sure, the colors don't clash against each other, but they don't flow together in a way that I find as striking/evocative as I do something like picrel.
Call it a taste issue, call it me liking to dazzle myself with le pretty colors, IDK, it's just one of the main things I get out of the whole fashion endeavor to begin with.

one thing I will say though, is that right now I don't really feel like buying any more loud-colored garments just to put together yet more outfits which in palette and concept I find appealing but in all other areas even I find lacking, like fit, fabric, and whatever shoes I have to wear them with for want of something more fitting.

Right now I think I'll just try and refine what I already have with tailoring and buying more understated pieces to compliment them.
I already think my 3-button plum suit is gonna be a mainstay of mine for how much I've managed to combine it with, I just need to get it properly tailored so the pants don't look like shit, as well as getting the obvious choice of low-profile black boots to go with it.

as for the brown jacket, some tan and charcoal pants would probably be sensible choices, on top of some plain brown shoes.

White Anglo-Saxon Protestants, better known as WASPs, are perhaps the ultimate cultural pariah in America these days. The culture has dwindled in the last 20 years, but there are still people out there whose wardrobes only consist of cable-knit sweaters, loafers, and patterned khakis. They’re not just rich white people. They’re the best kind of rich white people. There’s never been an appreciation for WASPs. They’re the ones who are constantly cast as the bad guys, and they’re never appreciated for how great they really are. Let’s raise a glass to WASPs.

Gingham.
Popham.
Clothing patterns that end in “-ham.”
Crossing your legs in Adirondack chairs.
Madras print.
Using “summer” as a verb.
Owning a boat, but never driving it yourself.
Any type of loafer.
Calling your family company’s employees “the help.”
At least half of the ACC.
Working in New York. Living in Connecticut.
The Winklevoss twins.
Sun tea.
Knowing the best “tentist” on the East Coast.
Kate the WASP.
Your mom having a nickname like “Mumsy” or “Bunny.”
Being from Vermont and owning an emerging maple syrup conglomerate.

Kennebunkport.
Richard Gere’s friends in “Pretty Woman.”

Barbour jackets.

Rowing crew.
The Kennedy family.
Yacht clubs.
Having a politically incorrect grandmother.
Your dog’s breeding line being just as important as your own family’s.
Andy Bernard.
The Ivy League.
The name “Wendell.”
Five generations of Lodge family breeding.
Having an elected member of Congress representing one of the 13 colonies in your family.

>>Refusing to call UVA a state school.
>explain
There can be several reasons why some people may refuse to call the University of Virginia (UVA) a state school. Here are a few possible reasons:

1. Prestige: UVA is a highly regarded and prestigious university. Some individuals may believe that referring to UVA as a state school does not adequately convey its esteemed reputation. They may prefer to emphasize its status as a renowned academic institution.

2. Autonomy: UVA has a significant degree of independence and autonomy in terms of governance and decision-making. It operates as a public university but has a unique status as a "public Ivy" institution. Some individuals may argue that UVA's level of independence sets it apart from traditional state schools.

3. Different Funding Model: While UVA is a public university in the sense that it receives funding from the state government, it also relies on significant private donations and endowments. This diverse funding model may make some people hesitate to categorize it solely as a state school.

4. Elite Identity: UVA is considered one of the public Ivy League universities, known for its academic excellence and selective admissions. Some individuals may refrain from referring to UVA as a state school to highlight its more exclusive and elite standing within the public university system.

It's important to note that these reasons are subjective and not universally held. Different people may have varying perspectives on how they categorize and label UVA's status.
