Don't know, but I started dressing similarly and I love it. Very simple and comfortable, looks good when you're fit, casual but still gets attention for being a little unusual.
Got a bunch of cheap bespoke shirts and trousers when I was in a third world country for work and now I'm never looking back.

'Late 70s to early 80s serial killer in San Francisco aesthetic'. That's exactly what they were going for - they even killed the film Nightcrawler, which has obvious connotations with Richard 'Night Stalker' Ramirez.

Best real life example would be Boyd Rice from that era. Wouldn't be at all surprised if the look was cribbed from him due to his obvious interests and influence during the era the film cribbed. The picture I've posted is him in the exact Nightcrawler get up Jake G. wears! In fact, the film is reminiscient of his book 'Twilight Man'.

For the look: be tall (6'2+), sub 32 inch waist and strong jawed, dark haired and pale, shave daily, short sleeve shirts coupled with heavy weight trousers (unfashionable turn ups would be good), Brylcreem'd back long hair, add military surplus when you can, short leather jacket, espadrilles or chunky leather shoes, colours= white/black/grey with the odd flourish. Back Ray Bans, obviously. The brief would obviously be: 'underground man who walks by night in stifling hot climate'.

its supposed to be a mix of 2014 trendy Californian hipster meets biz cas essentials, but ran through the lens of someone who can only see it as "normal human clothes" and doesn't go the extra length to understand the more unspoken rules and have it actually look good and not weird on them, not helped by how weird and creepy they already look.
that's the whole idea of the costume design.
you gotta understand film and tv costume designers don't always design things to be fashionable and unironically imitated, sometimes they do the opposite because it makes sense for the character.

Doubt. Sauce?

Louis Bloom generally dresses how society perceives someone of character, or class would dress. Dress pants and shirts. His outfit choices are a means to get an advantage and be seen as someone of note. And for the most part, that works. If he rocked yup selling videos to the news in cargo shorts and a hoody it would have the opposite outcome, and people on the street would also judge him as a nobody.

I do not see anything hipster or trendy in his choices at all.

But if you have taken that from costume designers on the movie, I'd be interested to read it.

They also wasn't born in a gay world, so your point is to not going to gym because it's gay? but almost any surrogate activity in this time is gay. You're forced to go to gym and eat supplements to get on the same lvl as our great-grandfathers.

Based post.

It's a perfect example of his fucked up human imitation/manipulation. He understands this is how people dress who succeed in the way he wants, but it's obvious he doesn't understand it from a place of personal expression.

That's why he often has accessories like an RPG character. One bracelet, one watch, one pair of sunglasses... because that's what people wear.

When I watched it the first time it actually gave me a bit of existential dread, as I naturally started dressing like him after college, and have wondered if my aggressive ladder-climbing is indictive of something being damaged upstairs.

>He understands this is how people dress who succeed in the way he wants

I agree with this. He is imitating what people define and see as a successful guy in society, and thus he gets some reward/benefit from that.

And I agree him him and this too. The different in how people treat me when I dress as some black metal dude to someone in a shirt and tie is night and day.

>That's why he often has accessories like an RPG character. One bracelet, one watch, one pair of sunglasses... because that's what people wear.

Not sure about this. I think the explanation is way more simple. The "bracelet" is a hair band, it has a function, often when he engages in criminal matters, it keeps his hair out of the way, and is more of an item to make sure everything runs smoothly.

The watch is well, yeah, a watch, to tell the time and an indicator of success/wealth.

The sunglasses likely because he is in California and goes to the beach, and ya now, it's sunny.

>as I naturally started dressing like him after college, and have wondered if my aggressive ladder-climbing

Because those higher the ladder dressed like that, so yes, you too wanted to do that to succeed. Can't see that as being damaged, that's what you have to do to succeed. Turning up as some "individual" would only make you look more like a damaged weirdo.

While similar, Louis doesn't have that image within some work environment, he has it as a whole life environment, so he always comes across as professional, successful, and someone worthy of respect.

Do we not all go to a wedding in a tie? A rock concert in a band shirt? We're all trying to fit into the environment, and that's all Louis sees as a whole, he does understand humans, and he uses that to get ahead and manipulate. And as you can see, it works.

yeah it's an entertaining film but don't give it too much credit. if anything deep was intended with the wardrobe well then it gets lost in the fact that jake is a very handsome, fit guy and the clothes are perfectly fitted and his haircut is fairly trendy

sopranos on the other hand deserves a lot more fashion analysis because it's obvious that geniuses were involved who were consciously thinking about every single piece of clothing

>> No.17649549

I think the wardrobe was as deep as "what is the normies vision of respectful, somewhat successful dress" and for that it works.

He is a good depiction of a sociopath thought, I would put it alongside no country for old men.

Jake true is a total piss in your face of the whole hurr you need to be 6'5" and hurr you need roids and 22 inch arms for women, when truth be told, a 5'11" 160lbs in shape attractive guy appeals to the vast majority of women. Then throw in the high intellect and confidence and boom. Perfect.
