Im about to fuckoff to west African islands, talk to me about straps for casual/evening straps, I have a 100m quartz shitter on a steel bracelet to fuck around with inna pool/sea. What strap options do you recommend to be semi-presentable, from light blue/orange MNs to full shark mesh to put on my microbrand shitter? Possibly no silicone. Pic vaguely rel, my timepiece is an english whatshisface microbrand, that I would have to dig too deep into the archives to get a good look.
I currently have picrel and fits fine.
The watch has a pilot-oriented look, goddamn I cannot find a pictire of it.

You should look into fine tuning the perspective, accurate positioning and blurring of those edited text layers. When the picture you're editing is blurry and gray, a sharp pitch black text layer sticks out like a sore thumb. Smoothen those sharp edges, color correct the text and maybe add a tiny bit of transparency to the layer so it blends in nicely. Good editing idea, though.

Rolex makes functional and very beautiful watches. I never get tired of wearing my Explorer 1. Rolex has become aspirational, that's the problem for many aficionados. The same has happened to Patek with the Nautilus. The plebs loves Rolex for the wrong reasons, the patricians will love Rolex for the beauty that emerges from the modesty and sincerity of many watches that were born as tools. Unfortunately, Rolex has destroyed many of its classics, altering the perfect proportions, maxi case, etc.

>> No.17630024

>>17630019
Watch stuff is pretty simple. Get out a ruler, or calipers if you're a man. Measure your wrist, behind the little bit of bone that sticks out. Now, look at the lug to lug measurement of the watch.

You want a ratio of 75-90%. Ideally, around 83%. So if you've got tiny little 50mm across wrists, you want a watch with a lug to lug of about 41mm. You can wear up to 95% and still have it look okay to other people, because the wrist actually increases in size by about a cm when you rotate it out to face others, but it'll look stupid if you take a wrist shot, and you'll have to look at a dinner plate every day.

The only other thing to worry about is watch thickness, the smaller your wrist, the smaller the thickness of the watch should be ideally. Anything around 10mm is good, anything above 13mm is bad for small wrists, anything above 15mm is bad if you don't have wrists the size of tree trunks.

Sub $100 - Casio Gshock or Seiko 5 sports depending on what you do for a living.
Anything from $150 to $3000 - Apple watch because anything else is just a cope.

$6000 - Rolex Explorer I/Datejust 36mm
$7000 - Rolex Explorer II
$8000 - Rolex Explorer I 39/40, Rolex Oyster Perpetual 41 or Datejust 41
$9000 - $12000 Rolex Sub
$15k+ - Rolex Gucci Subs

What, precisely, are the common characteristics? That they are all watches?
For reference, every watch in this screen shot is called "black bay." They are all totally different sizes and shapes and materials, any given 2 are about as different as 2 watches could be. It would be like if Rolex tried to call the Explorer, GMT Master II, and Submariner the same name.

Advice Everyone Should Know, Part 13:

1. There is no such thing as “heritage”. It’s all marketing invented in the 1990s.

2. You don’t need an expensive watch to be a good grandfather. Any old watch will become an heirloom if your grandson really loves you.

3. A guy wearing a Speedmaster isn’t an astronaut; wearing Rolex doesn’t make you James Bond

4. At the end of the day, it’s just a branch of the overpriced and shifting fashion. Nobody is gonna remain impressed for long.

5. Buy a watch a stick with it, and actually wear it; don’t buy to flip or invest.

6. Buy in mint condition, wear banged and scratched. They tell better stories, are more interesting, and give a gravitas to the wearer.

7. Quartz is better at keeping time; digital easier is to read. This is scientific fact. All other factors are opinion based.

8. There are only a select few watches with legendary status worth keeping in pristine condition, and none have been original or produced in the past 40 years.

9. The Golden Age of Wristwatches is over. It ended in the 90s.

10. Wear what you like, not what other people like

11. A rich man wearing a beat up Seiko is more interesting than a poor man paying monthly payments to wear a pristine Rolex

12. If you’re going to start a collection, make it interesting: Dirty Dozen, Vietnam War, movie watches, old movements, defunct brands, etc. A collection based around money is boring

13. At the end of the day, we will all be dead on 50-60 years. If we are lucky. Some of us in 1-10 years. We all like watches. Why not be nice to each other instead of flinging shit like women?

It's going ok. I went to the grocery store this afternoon and I picked up smooth peanut butter by accident. Normally, I prefer chunky peanut butter, so I'm a little bummed. I mean, I'll eat it. It's not like it's the end of the world, but a jar of peanut butter lasts me about a month so it's going to remind me that I didn't read the label closely enough every darn morning. Maybe I should think of it as an opportunity to switch up my breakfast and not be so monotonous. I've read a lot about the health benefits of steel cut oats but I've read that it takes like a half hour to cook them and who has that kind of time in the morning? My wife says you can actually make them in advance in the evening and let them soak overnight but that means I have to already start thinking about breakfast as soon as I finish dinner and that seems unhealthy. I would eat cold cereal but that seems childish. I haven't eaten cold cereal since I was a little kid. I know it sounds like I'm droning on and on but breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right?

The Tudor has movement issues. I don't know if they've been corrected yet because Rolex/Tudor never even admitted the problem existed in the first place. (For that matter, Rolex's 32xx series movements also have problems, so you may want to reconsider that DJ.)

Left actually one of my favorite watch, lasted about 2 years before the 'battery died.' New battery needed to be soldered on and the store wanted $120.

Right, worked for 5 years before another store said it needed a new battery on a supposed 10 year battery. Told me it has been 'sitting for 5 years,' wanted $50 for a battery(see battery on amazon for $35+$6 shipping). Battery lasted 1 year, went back to the same store and they said the watch is kaput and its not worth repairing.

I have like a few more Seikos that I probably threw away or sitting in storage somewhere. The only one that seem to worked for 15 years no issues now(and started my love for Seiko) is my SKX.

That's no different than me changing my name to Babe Ruth and claiming I'm the best baseball player ever.

For example, the original Breguet ceased to exist in 1970 when it was bought by Chaumet, who closed the original French factory and moved the company to Switzerland.
That's where the heritage ends.
Then it was purchased by InvestCorp who merged it with Nouvelle Lemania. That entity was then purchased by Swatch Group in 1999.

A. Lange & Söhne is probably one of the most egregious cases of borrowed heritage.
The original company from 1845 lasted until 1948 when it was nationalized and collectivized by the Communist East German government. (the town of Glashütte is in the former East.)

Then, in 1990 after the fall of the Berlin wall, a couple of investors with ties to the watch industry bought the rights and resurrected the company, hiring a descendant of Ferdinand A. Lange to add a sheen of legitimacy. The new company was assisted in setting up its watchmaking facilities by JLC and only operated for a few years before being bought by Richemont, which was the plan all along.

Interestingly enough Glashütte Original, the Swatch property, has as much of a claim to Lange's heritage as the Richemont group, since the original company was folded into a company called GUB which was later renamed Glashütte Original.

Yes, it does, especially if there's a long set of breaks in their history.

Oh, definitely. The fact that they produce superior watches is beyond doubt and I don't think fraudulent heritage is any reason to not buy one if you love them and can afford them.

It's just something that seems to be endemic to the watch world where if you haven't been there since at least the development of the Swiss Lever escapement, if you weren't putting watches in the hands of European royalty, then you don't count as true luxury. Depends how much heritage you want.

Patek has been owned by either the Philippe family or the Stern family from the start.
The Audemars family still owns most of Audemars Piguet.
Chopard was sold to the Scheufele family by the Chopard family when none of the Chopard descendants wanted to get into the watchmaking business.
Rolex has always been owned by the Wilsdorf foundation.

Then you've got other touchier subjects like Nomos, which is independent and always has been, but only for a few decades.
Or Jaeger-LeCoultre, which is owned by Richemont, but still operates as if it were independent, making every watch they make in Le Sentier, like they always have.

But the important question is do any of them make watches you like. In the end, you can't wear a story on your wrist.
