The magnifier is the most controversial part of the Rolex design. Everyone either loves it or hates it, and even the ones that love it probably only love it because that just happens to be the way Rolex does it. If anything the fault is the 6 oclock date. I can't say exactly why, but I never like 6 oclock dates as much as 3 oclock dates. It's not as symmetrical but it still comes out looking better somehow.

For some reasons Rolex is extremely autistic about their bracelets.
The weirdest exemple that comes to my mind is the Oysterflex. You can only have it on the Yacht-Master, Daytona and Sky-Dweller BUT ONLY if they're in precious metals. Rolex will tell you to fuck off if you try to buy an Oysterflex for your steel Daytona.
But that's not all. You CAN have it on a gold Yacht-Master but NOT on a gold Submariner even though that would make sense. Submariner is Oyster only.

Looking to buy a first watch, help me out a bit with some suggestions.
> Your budget
1500€
> Watch type, e.g. dress, diver, pilot
No big preferences here, it's my first watch after all, but I do think something in a metal case would fit my style much more.
> Movement, e.g. automatic, hand wound, quartz
No clue frankly.
> Desired features, e.g. water resistance, day/date, 2nd time zone
Telling the time is pretty much the only thing I require.
> Preferred strap option, e.g. leather, nylon, bracelet
Leather or a bracelet, but as I mention below I am an utter wristlet so I fear most bracelets would just overpower my arm

my wrist is 15cms

Even if you have a big wrist a 36mm watch just looks elegant and classy. It's almost the perfect case diameter for anyone man or woman. I think you'd have to have an absolutely massive wrist, like approaching 9 inches, before you'd have a problem with 36mm looking too small.

>> No.17617671

No, a watch that's designed to be 40mm looks fine at 40mm.

Watch guys are usually either tiny, twig-like manlets or stinking, greasy, hamplanets. (There's very little in-between.) I don't know if it's something that happens once they decide to have a watch collection or if they're just trying to overcompensate for the fact that fashionable clothes look like shit on them.

If you take a 36mm Explorer and a 40mm Submariner side by side, you'll notice their dials are exactly the same diameter (also work for the GMT Master II, old Explorer II, Daytona, Datejust, etc).
It makes sense for the Submariner to be 40mm because of its large rotating bezel.
It makes no sense for the Explorer to be 40mm because it's a simple 3 hands watch.

Any healthy adult man can wear both.
But there are some "people" (Amerilards) who are so fat they can't wear a 36mm Explorer because it looks tiny on their fat wrists.

Noting this, brands decided to adapt to the lardass demographics and started to make 40mm 3 hands watches. They also discontinued 36mm watches and marketed their newest larger watches as more "manly" so healthy people bought them too.

Thank God Rolex still makes 36mm basic 3 hands watches but I'm 100% sure it would be more profitable for them to produce only 46mm dinner plates to content all the fatties and idiots out there.

Watch YouTubers are the lowest form of biological life.
>never say bad things about brands or design choice because "to each is own" and "every opinions are valid"
>never talk about movements specs because they don't know shit
>never mention accuracy because for some reasons it doesn't matter
>never talk about in-house calibers because fuck you
And yet they'll make the dumbest clickbait like "THIS GRAND SEIKO DESTROYS ROLEX" or "HERE'S WHY THE SPEEDMASTER IS BETTER THAN THE DAYTONA", only to say that in the end "it's just a matter of personal choice"

I don't care for the style, but my problem with this and so many watches is legibility.
Those mirrored silver hands on that light dial with silver indicies do not give me that instant legibility I want in a wrist watch.
At first I thought it was just light dials and light hands but having handled a calatrava 5227G in a boutique a lol'd at the fact that, at a certain angle, the ultra-polished hands disappeared entirely into the blackness of the dial.

There has to be more. Some kind of angle or grind that makes the hands and indicies stand out regardless. Some makers do it better than others from what I've seen.
