Unless you're just gigachad von handsomemodelman or actual old english landed gentry, can anyone today pull off wearing long boots casually?

No, you'll look super weird. Even back in the old days the military guys who wore tall boots would often blouse their pants over them. It draws too much attention to the leg and looks too feminine.
Engineers and cowboys only look okay because they have the shape or strapping that breaks up the leg silhouette and look less feminine as a result.

>> No.17613754

The point of your socks isn't to keep your feet cool, especially in boots that are likely not breatheable in the first place. The point is to wick moisture away from your feet to keep them clean and prevent skin irritation and possible damage. Wool is better at that than cotton and will take more abuse. If its hot enough to be an actual problem then you want that wicking.

Don't waste your time with Nicks. They stole their designs from Whites, which was one of the original PNW boot companies, and the quality control at Nicks is pretty risky, not to mention that their customer service is inferior. If you want a versatile 6" lace up boot, go for any Whites in their 55 last, such as the 350 cruiser. You could also put in a custom order for a pair of Whites Bounty Hunters (pic related) at Bakers Boots, but it will likely be like an 8 month wait. I don't own any Whites, but I've had the pleasure of trying on their 350 cruisers at a shop in Portland and was blown away at the level of comfort and support, especially with the instep.

Fuck cowboy hats, can we talk about cowboy boots? I've started a small collection of vintage cowboy boots and I feel like a complete retard because I don't understand how they fit so well.

All my other boots are lace up, you tighten the laces, your foots secure, etc. That makes sense to me. The cowboy boots don't have laces, but somehow still conform to my feet and don't slip. And I can by that at first, but leather stretches. How the hell do they still fit well years after first wear? I assumed eventually they'd get loose since there's no way to tighten them, nope.

Any chance thursday could add features to new models or old?

Features; gusseted tongue, extra thick leather upper, grinding a channel into rubber outsole so welt stitch can be recessed, non synthetic heel and internals.

If there was a thursday boot with these kind of features wowza, id grab a pair, I already own 9 pairs.

fair enough. only reason i'm hesitant on spending is because i usually buy one pair of shoes and wear them every day, and I do a lot of walking, probably around 30-40 miles a week. I'm seeing a lot of stuff about how wearing one shoe every day fucks them up to the point you can't even resole them so I'm not sure.
if I can get 5 years use out of the shoe with good care and resoling every 2 years or whatever then I'll buy the £320 ones without hesitation.

no, it's a question on a boot forum.
I don't have the money for multiple shoes, and if the consensus is that daily wear is bad for a shoe no matter how expensive a shoe is then I'll buy the cheaper shoe and replace it every year. if there are shoes that last daily wear without irrepairable damage then please recommend them. As I said, I don't mind resoles or spending some money every couple years as long as it's less than the cost of a new shoe.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles. But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

Can't speak to the quality of any specific boot, but you're probably going to want roughout as your material (not suede, actual roughout). US Military switched over to roughout boots a while ago because they require virtually 0 maintenance, maybe sand down some high grain or hit them with a lighter to clean up long strands.
Anything goodyear welted in roughout should last virtually forever, only point of failure would be the sole but that's why you get resoleable boots in the first place.

Wearing every day isn't just about the sole wear, it's about the moisture that builds up inside and isn't given a chance to dry. Ever.
Wearing the same pair of even the most finely crafted anything will shorten its life, not the sole's life - that's replaceable anyway - but the entire shoe.
Soggy sweat moldy shit weakening the interior over time, leading to stinking shoes and smelly feet. And if you're one of those people whose body chemistry produces low pH sweat then that's even worse.
Buy two pairs so that one dries and so they dont smell.
Or, you know, don't. You've been warned.
