Not gonna lie...the proportions are really beautiful on this. I'm a sucker for the separated minute track (matching the width of the bezel) through bevel, and placement of the day of the week, and the length of the hands. It's a perfect design. Is it running well?

>> No.17581751

I would do black with white stitching. I'll pull out the green of the bezel really hard. You could also do a purple strap (purple and green conflict hard), which, again, would pull out the green.

Otherwise, you could go more traditional: black, dark green, etc. Basically, check your colour wheel and see what is close to green or far away. Closer, it blends in, further, it makes the green pop.

I agree, it's just right, i love it, even the crown is hidden which makes it sleek. It's been running non-stop for about a year now, used to be about half a minute slow but it then corrected itself and is now running a bit fast, it probably depends on how wound the mainspring is. I don't bother with accuracy that much, i set it once or twice a week.
There were a few different case and dial variants made.

>>17581753
Yours looks great. Have you had it serviced recently? Regarding your hypothesis about the accuracy related to the power reserve; it definitely will be, given the era of the watch. If you keep it wound in the first 24hours of power reserve, it should be okay and run relatively stable. If it's outside, it should run slow. If it runs slow before the 24 hours is up, you should have it serviced post haste, as there might be other issues at play.

>pic related is shit after 24hours power reserve. If it's dial up, it's cool, but god help you if it's crown up....

I had it serviced when i got it, and then had to service it again because the first guy did a half-ass job, he cleaned it and all, but failed to fix the issues it had, so they came back after some time.
It's a pure auto, meaning no hand winding, so i just wear it everyday and if i do wear another watch it's just for one day, so i'm guessing it's pretty much topped up all the time.

Makes sense. If it's only auto, then yeah...I guess you have no choice but to wear it everyday (or get a watch winder?). Setting it once or twice a week is cool...given that the older generation might set theirs once a day to the radio time signal, one can see it as a gentle improvement of convenience.

Yeah, they add depth to it and create a stage for the hands. They had to machine a recess into the dial so the day disc would fit because it sits higher than the date. There are also 2 jewels under the day wheel to help it slide over the movement easier.

1. The time is actually 00:00:00 Jan 1
2. The watch believes it is 00:00:00 Jan 1
3. 24 hours pass
4. The time is actually 00:00:05 Jan 2
5. The watch believes it is 00:00:00 Jan 2
6. The watch gets a GPS fix. Real time is actually 00:00:05, so the internal clock is moved forward 5 seconds.
7. The previous time adjustment was ±0%. The watch was accurate at last fix. Since then, 86405 seconds have passed in 86400 seconds of "watch time". Therefore, the new adjustment should be 86405 / 86400 - 1 = +0.0058%

This isn't very complex. Current code:

on fix:
- read new time fix into r1
- write into current time the content of r1

New code:

on fix:
- load last time fix into r1
- load new time fix into r2
- load current time into r3
- write into current time the content of r1
- subtract (r2 - r1) into r2 ; elapsed, real
- subtract (r3 - r1) into r3 ; elapsed, local
- divide (r2 / r3) into r2 ; real seconds per local second
- read clock speed multiplier into r3
- multiply (r2 * r3) into r3
- write into clock speed multiplier the value of r3

I know that there are some watches which do this (russian ones and allegedly technochas), so it's not impossible.

If you're seriously worried about being a second out, you get GPS. Realistically, radio is never going to be a second out as long as you get one sync a week, so if you're on planes every single day, maybe you might be slightly off.

The thing with variance is that it isn't static. Maybe today you happened to be out in the sun all day and that heated up your quartz crystal a bit too much. If you adjust for that and then go to Antarctica tomorrow, you're doubling your error.

Yes, a smaller mass makes the winding less efficient so the whole thing needs to be re-designed. Those small winding masses are usually made of something heavy like gold or platinum.

The Rolex ExpII, especially the one you pictured is a very comfortable watch. The SMP, being larger and thicker, is less so.

The SMP is hand-winding, which some people enjoy, and others think is a pain in the ass. The ExplI is a colossal pain in the ass to set because it doesn't have a quickset date.

You have to determine for yourself which of their respective complications you find more useful: keeping track of a second timezone or a stopwatch?

Owned both, if you want one watch for the rest of your life, I would say go with a modern Rolex with a solid bracelet, the older ones will stretch on you in time. Just get a newish Sub, that will stand you well (suit or shorts), easy to cash out of if you ever need the money and will always be a Sub.

If you don't want to pay grey market prices, get a Speedmaster as long as you will be only winding it every day like other anon stated. I always think 2 watches is the perfect number, so you always have 1 when the other is getting serviced.
I'm an Omega fan boy and I would go with the Speedmaster. Pick a used one up for £4000ish, your talking £10000 for a sub. The Ex2 will be worth more than the speedy if that is important to you in 30 years but you could through the differents into an index if you were really worried about that. I had the white ex2 buy the black dial is much nicer.

It's this part. The four-tooth day-date corrector wheel is made of plastic, and cracks with age.

I have a watchmaker friend who was stuck with a King Seiko 5626 that had this wheel crack. Since I'm a Seiko autist I knew that 5606 used this part too, so bailed him out with a substantially more affordable 5606 donor.

This one had the part still intact. If it were broken, that would only mean the movement doesn't have a quickset anymore and you'd have to set it like a Vostok.

As for Diafix, it's just really tiny, fragile and prone to pinging and being lost forever.

Yes, but this can be fixed by just using more crystals. If you have two crystals with different thermal expansion curves, you can calculate the real time so that the effect of the temperature cancels out.

For example, if crystal #1 has twice the temperature sensitivity of crystal #2, then getting the right time is a simple matter of algebra.

Swatch makes the Powermatic in different grades. The bottom-tier versions have plastic parts, the higher-end versions do not.

The Powermatic is really just an ETA 2824 with a longer mainspring and lowered beat rate (that's how they got the improved power reserve) and they replaced the regulating stud with a free-sprung balance. For the money it's not actually a bad movement.

I understand what quality means. I'm asking you to explain why the qualities of some swiss brand justify charging 1000x more over the cost of a microbrand like Islander. For example, a Rolex is a cosc certified chronometer that's accurate to within about 2 seconds a day. A watch with a typical off the shelf movement like an islander with a seiko or miyota or sellita movement will be good to about 5 to 8 seconds per day. Is a difference of 3-5 seconds a day worth $10k or more to you? If your rolex breaks it it worth it to you to pay the cost of 2-4 whole new islanders to fix it? Where is the breaking point between quality and value for you?

>> No.17582921

>>17582918
>Where is the breaking point between quality and value for you?
Well, that's a more reasonable question. Ignoring the troll who is trying to suggest than an Islander is no different than a Rolex, the answer is purely personal/subjective.

One person might find it an intolerable over-charge by Rolex, the other wants the Rolex and will not be happy with anything less, even if, on paper, the specs of the cope watch are 99% of the Rolex.

I suppose that one's income level plays into this a lot as well. If the Rolex is affordable, then the Islander is basically the price of a nice shirt. If the Rolex is a stretch that will require many years of saving, then the Islander becomes a value proposition.

>> No.17582939

nta, but if you’re aware of what the COSC cert is, then shouldn’t it be easy to compare and contrast how a Rolex movement does against a common Miyota or Seiko calibre under similar conditions?

Look at an islander watch in person. Look at a rolex in person. The differences are quite obvious.
Islanders, even within the microbrand (which really means cheaply made, off the shelf) community, is vastly overpriced. You should get a chinese homage before you buy an islander, because it's half the price and it would also put Marc out of business.

seems the Marine Original is quite a recent release, but in that pic it looks to have some discolouration on the blued hands, which would indicate age
if this is a recent model, that's akin to the fauxtina effects seen on quite a few other modern watches, which appeals to the pseudo-authentic market, but the closest i ran across on the site was image related which is a bit closer to that 'blinding white' you mentioned

that being said, it's quite easy on the eye in the eggshell white, but that darkened area on the hands would bother me to own, because i'd know it wasn't a natural effect from age, but a pretentious affectation
then again, that 'discolourisation' might just be from a bad photo

Anyone here have opinions on service dials/hands on vintage watches?

Bought a Datejust 1601 with a service dial/hands - the year of the watch would dictate it should have a Radium dial - but it has a Tritium one (T Swiss T)

Buying this as a present for my dad - brother and I are currently in a back and forth about it - he doesn't like vintage period and wants to spend 2x the price for a new OP. I liked this one because it's his birth year and I ended up getting it for what I think is a decent price ($3500 - threw an offer out there and they accepted)

But wondering what people think about the idea of the service dial on it and how much it might affect the price etc. I feel like $3500 is probably as low as one could get a 1601 (with bracelet) but I'm just looking to get some opinions here. Since it wasn't disclosed it wasn't all original I should be able to return it if I want to.

To me the biggest pain in the ass is the old style jubilee band with folded links since I'll have to pay someone to install extension links on there because I don't trust myself unfolding/refolding the metal lol

My brother however thinks 36mm is a ladies size watch (I have 8 inch wrists and I don't think it wears badly on me) - and that since the watch looks new/polished it doesn't have the personality of a vintage.

idk - just curious about some thoughts.

Right now I have a 3rd party bracelet on for now so if we follow through we can see how many links I'd need to order to install since they aren't cheap - or if he prefers leather bands to bracelets etc. Only prob is the end links get fucky on a 3rd party bracelet so it's a bit janky right now but it's temporary

If you like it, don't over think the size and it's vintage anyway, if it was a new DJ you should get a 41mm but that's a different price point, the vintage has it's own charm anyway. $3500 is not to bad for the watch regardless of the service dial and hands. If it was a vintage GMT or Sub I'd feel very differently about it but in a vintage DJ it's not the end of the work.

A fat guy with a luxury collection. Some anons here don't like him because he posts the same pictures over and over, so hes recognizable which goes against board culture

Oh, so he must look pretty decent in oversized watches then, huh?

He's otherwise called Mortadello or Fat Mortadello. He may or may not be a lawyer, so his simps here call him Lawyeranon or Lawyersama.

Only guy left with a real luxury collection.
We've been losing good posters in droves over the last year. One wonders what the fuck is wrong with him that he hasn't left.

Yeah, makes no sense when Islander literally makes the same watch in automatic for half the price plus other desirable features.

Smart watches might have something to do with it, but I think it's mostly just the constant flexing vs seething.
There's very little talking about watches.

He wanted a thin non electronic watch, that's a very thin watch. Winding your watch isn't maintainance either.

Yeah, because every time you bring up a watch that isn't a luxury swiss pissing match winner the whole board plugs their noses and seethes.

I don't use them out and about, I use them on and off as desk clocks, I more just wanted some 18k gold pocket watches, stop watched I use for cooking, they are lovely to wind.

I'll most likely end up buying a nice gold PP pocket watch someitme, when the right one comes along.

Need some watch suggestions, here are some specs and explanations
> 150 euro
> Whatever type an explorer or prx is
> Prefer automatic but it's not a must
> Metal strap

I currently own 2 watches. One is a DW5600 g shock which I use daily at work. I'm a civil engineer and work at construction sites so it fits perfectly. My second watch is a Zeppelin Atlantic (pic rel) which is use for more upscale occasions. Is like to have an offwork daily driver and in my mind an explorer type watch fits great. I'm open to suggestions tho. I like the PRX but my Atlantic is 250 euros and I am always aware not to damage it, I can't daily driver a 400+ euro one.
